Abstract
Oral focal mucinosis (OFM) is a rare lesion first described in 1974, but the aetiology remains unknown. Clinically, OFM presents as an asymptomatic nodular lesion and the similarity of clinical features to other soft tissue injuries makes the diagnosis difficult. The aim of this study was to integrate the demographic, clinical, and histopathological characteristics from previously published cases of OFM into a systematic review. Electronic searches without publication date restriction were performed in the following databases: Embase, PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus. Case reports or case series of OFM published in English and presenting enough clinical and histopathological information were included. This systematic review identified 42 studies from 12 countries, comprising 113 cases of OFM. This lesion affected more females than males, usually in the fourth decade of life. The gingiva was the most common anatomical location, followed by the palate. Clinical presentation was most often an asymptomatic nodule. Imaging exams revealed that most cases did not have bone involvement. Surgical removal was the treatment of choice for most cases and only one recurrent case was reported. In conclusion, OFM is an uncommon pathology, and its diagnosis depends on histopathological analysis. The lesion could be included as a differential diagnosis of benign soft tissue lesions of the oral cavity, especially those affecting the gingiva.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Calcifying odontogenic cysts (Gorlin cysts) most commonly present centrally and have only rarely been reported in peripheral locations. The purpose of this report is to describe a new case of peripheral calcifying odontogenic cyst (PCOC) occurring in the anterior maxillary gingiva and to review the management and differential diagnosis of such a lesion. METHODS A 37-year-old female presented with a long-standing submucosal nodule on the gingiva between the maxillary central incisors, with asymptomatic growth over the last three years. Following an initial incisional biopsy, a diagnosis of PCOC was established. To exclude the possibility of a central process, a corresponding small field of view cone beam CT scan was obtained and the patient returned for a 6 mm excisional biopsy to the depth of the periosteum. RESULTS Results of these additional assessments supported the original diagnosis of PCOC. Following uneventful healing of the second biopsy, no recurrence or other clinical findings were noted at 1-year follow-up. CONCLUSION While rare, the peripheral variant of calcifying odontogenic cyst, and other peripheral counterparts to recognized central cysts and tumors, should be considered in a differential diagnosis for a benign gingival nodule. Gingival tissue should be submitted for histologic evaluation to ensure a neoplastic process is not present. KEY POINTS Various lesions may present on the gingiva as a "bump"; these can represent common clinical entities, such as pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, and fibroma, or more rare conditions that may not be adequately considered in the differential diagnosis. A rarely documented case of peripheral calcifying odontogenic cyst (PCOC; Gorlin cyst) on the maxillary anterior gingiva of an adult female is reported here and compared with the few other similar PCOC cases in the literature. A biopsy of gingival lesions is always necessary to establish the correct diagnosis and provide the appropriate treatment. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY Several different lesions can appear on the gingiva (gums). Some are quite common, and some are rare. This report documents the occurrence of a new case of calcifying odontogenic cyst (Gorlin cyst), a type of cyst that has been rarely found outside the jawbone, presenting as a "bump" on the gingiva between the maxillary central incisor teeth of an adult female. Because of the patient history, a peripheral calcifying odontogenic cyst (PCOC) was not initially suspected. Following a biopsy, a PCOC diagnosis was given. The possibility of a lesion within the bone was then excluded by an X-ray (cone beam CT) scan examination. A second, more extensive biopsy confirmed the diagnosis and the removal of the lesion. The patient had no complications or recurrence for the following 12 months. This case highlights the need to always biopsy lesions presenting on the gums to obtain a proper diagnosis and provide the correct treatment.

Abstract
A 11-month-old male intact Shar-Pei (26. 5 kg) was presented for a bilateral sublingual swelling of 4 months duration. The exploration of the oral cavity highlighted the presence of bilateral sublingual swellings, primarily consistent with bilateral ranula. The bilateral disease was treated with two subsequent surgeries 4 weeks apart. During the surgery, after removing an elliptical portion of the mucosa of the sublingual swelling, the presence of gelatinous tissue was visualized, and no saliva was present. The result of histological exam was oral mucinosis. At the subsequent follow-up the dog was in excellent conditions, without any symptoms. 1 month after the last operation, the dog underwent a visit in sedation to better evaluate the oral cavity. Both surgical sites were well-healed and without the presence of relapses. Upon 8 months follow-up the patient remained free of disease. This is the first reported case of oral mucinosis in sublingual mucosa in dogs. In this case the surgical treatment was curative.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral focal mucinosis (OFM) is a rare benign condition of unknown etiology, considered the oral counterpart of cutaneous focal mucinosis. We report the clinicopathologic features of 21 cases of OFM in conjunction with a review of the literature. METHODS Clinical data were collected from the records of five oral and maxillofacial pathology services. All cases were evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin staining, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry (vimentin, S-100, α-SMA, CD34, and mast cell). RESULTS The series comprised 14 females (66.7%) and seven males (33.3%), with a mean age of 48.2 ± 20.7 years (range: 8-77 years) and a 2:1 female-to-male ratio. Most of the lesions affected the gingiva (n = 6, 28.6%) and presented clinically as asymptomatic sessile or pedunculated nodules with fibrous or hyperplasic appearance. All cases were negative for S-100 protein, CD34, and α-SMA and positive for Alcian blue staining. Conservative surgical excision was the treatment in all cases, and there was only one recurrence. CONCLUSION OFM is a rare benign disorder that is often clinically misdiagnosed as reactive lesions or benign proliferative processes. Dermatologists and pathologists should consider OFM in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue lesions in the oral cavity, mainly located in the gingiva.
