Health behavior of North Korean, multicultural and Korean family adolescents in Korea: the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, 2011-2013

A Study on the Factors Influencing Smoking in Multicultural Youths in Korea

Based on the ecological integration model, this study examined the factors affecting smoking in adolescents from multicultural families by dividing them into two levels: microsystem and social network factors. The data were from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (KYRBS) from 2016 to 2020. It included 4577 respondents whose fathers, mothers, or both, were not born in Korea. The factors affecting smoking among multicultural teenagers were determined by a composite-sample multiple logistic regression analysis. Male smoking rates among multicultural adolescents were 2.49 times higher than female rates in the microsystem. When the father was "Korean" rather than a "Foreigner", smoking was 0.55 times lower in family factors in terms of social network. In social factors of social networks, multicultural adolescents' smoking was 12.02 times greater when they were drinking than when they were not, and 3.62 times higher when the answer to the question of whether they had experienced violence was "yes" than "no." Based on the ecological model in this study, social factors such as drinking, and violence were highly related to smoking. Since multicultural adolescents were closely influenced by the surrounding environment, such as family, school, and social relationship, it was necessary to let parents and schoolteachers be involved in the intervention of smoking of multicultural adolescents so that they can help multicultural adolescents adjust better to school and perform better academically while decreasing risky behaviors for their health, such as drinking and, ultimately, smoking.

The growth status of North Korean refugee adolescents in South Korea: comparison with South Korean adolescents

AIM

To assess the growth status of North Korean refugee adolescents (NKRA) living in South Korea (SK) and compared their growth status with that of SK adolescents (SKA).

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

NKRA were interviewed from 2017 to 2020, whereas the data for SKA were from the 2016-2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. SKA and NKRA were matched by age and gender in a 3:1 ratio and 534 SKA and 185 NKRA were enrolled.

RESULTS

After adjusting for the covariates, NKRA had greater prevalences of thinness (odds ratio [OR], 11.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.9-45.6) and obesity (OR, 12.0; 95% CI, 3.1-46.1) than SKA, but not of short stature. In comparison with SKA in low-income families, NKRA had similarly greater prevalences of thinness and obesity, but not in short stature. As the length of stay of NKRA in SK increased, the prevalence of short stature and thinness did not decrease, while the prevalence of obesity increased significantly.

CONCLUSION

Although they had lived in SK for several years, NKRA had greater prevalences of thinness and obesity than SKA and the prevalence of obesity increased significantly with the length of stay in SK.

Factors Influencing Smoking among Multicultural Adolescents

Since an increasing number of multicultural adolescents have started smoking in Korean society, it is necessary to check the smoking status among multicultural adolescents and provide differentiated smoking cessation education and awareness through intervention programs. This study examined the factors that influenced smoking among multicultural adolescents and identified interventions. This study was a cross-sectional survey. It used raw data from the 15th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) of 2019. Of the 57,303 participants in the 15th KYRBS, 749 were multicultural adolescents, i.e., their fathers or mothers were not born in Korea. The factors affecting smoking among multicultural adolescents were determined using a composite sample multiple logistic regression analysis. The results of the composite sample multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that 41 (6.4%) participants were smokers, had low academic performance levels, drank alcohol, were sexually active, and were more likely to smoke with other adolescents. They were 15.79 times more likely to smoke while drinking than when not drinking. Educational and psychological interventions are needed to increase multicultural youth school adaptation and academic performance levels, reduce health risk behaviors (drinking and sexually active), and ultimately, lower the smoking rate.

Health risk behaviors and psychological problems among South Korean, North Korean, and other multicultural family adolescents (2011-2016)

This study was aimed to investigate the health risk behaviors and psychological problems among North Korean, other multicultural, and South Korean family adolescents. The data were collected from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior web-based survey (2011-2016) data set. A total of 17,195 adolescents (mean age 14.65 ± 0.01 years) were analyzed to compare health risk behaviors and psychological problems among the three groups. Concerning risk behaviors, multicultural family adolescents showed a higher rate of alcohol use, smoking, drug use and sexual relations compared to South Korean family adolescents. Moreover, North Korean family adolescents were more likely to experience those risk behaviors than other multicultural family adolescents. Concerning psychological problems, multicultural family youth displayed more depressed mood, and more suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts when compared with South Korean family youth. Among multicultural families, North Korean family adolescents were more depressed and showed higher suicidality. School-based education and preventive interventions are necessary to manage risk behaviors and psychological difficulties of adolescents in North Korean and other multicultural families.

Health Behavior and Factors Associated with Depression in North Korean Adolescent Defectors in South Korea: The Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, 2011-2014

Background

The number of North Korean adolescent defectors entering South Korea has been increasing. The health behavior, including mental health-related behavior, and factors associated with depression in North Korean adolescent defectors residing in South Korea were investigated.

Methods

Data obtained from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (2011–2014) dataset were utilized. In total, 206 North Korean adolescent defectors were selected, and for the control group, 618 matched South Korean adolescents were selected. Frequency analysis was used to determine the place of birth and nationality of the parents, chi-square tests were used to compare the general characteristics of the North and South Korean subjects, and multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to compare the health behavior of the two sets of subjects. To determine the factors associated with depression in the North Korean subjects, a logistic regression was performed.

Results

The North Korean adolescents reported higher current smoking (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.54; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.48 to 4.35), current drinking (aOR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.15 to 2.99), and drug use rates (aOR, 10.99; 95% CI, 4.04 to 29.88) than did the South Korean adolescents. The factors associated with depression in the North Korean adolescents were current smoking (aOR, 6.99; 95% CI, 1.62 to 30.06), lifetime drinking experience (aOR, 5.32; 95% CI, 1.51 to 18.75), and perceived stress (aOR, 4.74; 95% CI, 1.74 to 12.90).

Conclusion

There were differences in health behavior between the North and South Korean adolescents. A specialized approach for North Korean adolescent defectors is required to promote proper health behavior and adaptation to South Korean society.
