Abstract
Research on proteins and peptides that play roles in metabolic regulation, which may be considered potential insulin resistance markers in some medical conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, obesity and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), has recently gained in interest. PCOS is a common endocrine disorder associated with hyperandrogenemia and failure of ovulation, which is often accompanied by metabolic abnormalities, including obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance. In this review, we focus on less commonly known peptides/proteins and investigate their role as potential biomarkers for insulin resistance in females affected by PCOS. We summarize studies comparing the serum fasting concentration of particular agents in PCOS individuals and healthy controls. Based on our analysis, we propose that, in the majority of studies, the levels of nesfastin-1, myonectin, omentin, neudesin were decreased in PCOS patients, while the levels of the other considered agents (e.g., preptin, gremlin-1, neuregulin-4, xenopsin-related peptide, xenin-25, and galectin-3) were increased. However, there also exist studies presenting contrary results; in particular, most data existing for lipocalin-2 are inconsistent. Therefore, further research is required to confirm those hypotheses, as well as to elucidate the involvement of these factors in PCOS-related metabolic complications.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Polycystic ovary syndrome is an endocrinopathy that mainly affects adolescent girls and young women of childbearing age. In girls, the presence of clinical and biochemical symptoms of hyperandrogenism should be particularly considered. The role of vitamin D deficiency in insulin resistance, inflammation, dyslipidemia, and obesity, i.e. in diseases associated with PCOS, has been investigated, which may suggest its involvement in the pathophysiology of the syndrome. Leptin has been shown to stimulate the formation of FGF23 in bones. There is a relationship between the incidence of dyslipidemia, adipose tissue mass and the concentration of fibroblast growth factor 23. The main aim of the presented research project is to assess the concentration of vitamin D, calcium, and selected hormones as well as the concentration of adipokines (leptin) in girls diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included a population of 85 girls and young women aged 14 to 22 years. The study group included 37 girls who were diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome according to the modified Rotterdam's criteria. The control group consisted of 48 completely healthy girls. In the first stage of the study participants were required to answer background questions. Next, anthropometric measurements were performed. The laboratory tests assessed: leptin, FGF23, FSH, SHGB, total testosterone, DHEA-S, 25-OH-D3, PTH, calcium, androstadiene, AMH, glucose, insulin. RESULTS The vitamin D level in the group with polycystic ovary syndrome was lower than in the control group, but there was no statistically significant difference. The level of anti-Müllerian hormone was significantly higher in the group of girls diagnosed with PCOS compared to the control group. Statistically significant differences between both groups were also noted in the HOMA-IR value. The concentration of calcium, parathyroid hormone, FGF23 and leptin in the study and control groups showed no statistically significant difference. CONCLUSIONS In the studied group of girls with PCOS, no correlation between the level of vitamin D and selected parameters such as: AMH leptin, HOMA-IR and FGF23 was confirmed. On this basis, it can be assumed that additional vitamin D supplementation would not reduce the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome.

Abstract
A body of studies has examined the circulating concentration of adipokines including apelin, vapin, resistin, and chemerin in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. However, their findings have been inconclusive. Therefore, we systematically reviewed available studies to illuminate the overall circulating concentration of adipokines in PCOS subjects. Cochrane's Library, PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases were searched from the earliest available date up to April 2021 for relevant articles. The quality of each study was assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. The pooled effect size was estimated based on the random effects model, and the standard mean differences (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were reported. A total of 88 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the current systematic review and meta-analysis. The results of the analysis showed that serum levels of vaspin (SMD 0.69; 95% CI, 0.22 to 1.17; P = 0.004; I2 = 90.6%), chemerin (SMD 1.87; 95% CI, 1.35 to 2.40; P < 0.001; I2 = 94.4%), and resistin (SMD 0.66; 95% CI, 0.41 to 0.91; P < 0.001; I2 = 92.6%) were significantly higher in the PCOS group compared to controls. However, there was no significant difference between the PCOS and control groups in relation to apelin levels (SMD - 0.17; 95% CI, - 1.06 to 0.73; P = 0.714; I2 = 97.8%). We found that serum levels of vaspin, chemerin, and resistin were significantly higher in PCOS subjects compared with controls. It seems that these adipokines can be measured as a useful marker to predict the development of PCOS.

Circulating resistin and follistatin levels in obese and non-obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis. PLoS One 2021; 16:e0246200. Abstract
This meta-analysis was performed to resolve the inconsistencies regarding resistin and follistatin levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by pooling the available evidence. A systematic literature search using PubMed and Scopus was carried out through November 2020 to obtain all pertinent studies. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to evaluate the strength of the association between the levels of resistin and follistatin with PCOS in the overall and stratified analysis by obesity status. A total of 47 publications, 38 for resistin (2424 cases; 1906 controls) and 9 studies for follistatin (815 cases; 328 controls), were included in the meta-analysis. Resistin levels were significantly higher in PCOS women compared with non-PCOS controls (WMD = 1.96 ng/ml; 95%CI = 1.25–2.67, P≤0.001) as well as in obese PCOS women vs. obese controls, and in non-obese PCOS women compared with non-obese controls, but not in obese PCOS vs. non-obese PCOS patients,. A significantly increased circulating follistatin was found in PCOS patients compared with the controls (WMD = 0.44 ng/ml; 95%CI = 0.30–0.58, P≤0.001) and in non-obese PCOS women compared with non-obese controls and in obese PCOS women vs. obese controls, but, no significant difference in follistatin level was observed in obese PCOS compared with non-obese PCOS women. Significant heterogeneity and publication bias was evident for some analyses. Circulating levels of resistin and follistatin, independent of obesity status, are higher in women with PCOS compared with controls, showing that these adipokines may contribute to the pathology of PCOS.

Abstract
It is well known that adipokines are endocrine factors that are mainly secreted by white adipose tissue. Their central role in energy metabolism is currently accepted. More recently, their involvement in fertility regulation and the development of some reproductive disorders has been suggested. Data concerning the role of leptin and adiponectin, the two most studied adipokines, in the control of the reproductive axis are consistent. In recent years, interest has grown about some novel adipokines, chemerin, visfatin, resistin and apelin, which have been found to be strongly associated with obesity and insulin-resistance. Here, we will review their expression and role in male and female reproduction in humans and animal models. According to accumulating evidence, they could regulate the secretion of GnRH (Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone), gonadotropins and steroids. Furthermore, their expression and that of their receptors (if known), has been demonstrated in the human and animal hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis. Like leptin and adiponectin, these novel adipokines could thus represent metabolic sensors that are able to regulate reproductive functions according to energy balance changes. Therefore, after investigating their role in normal fertility, we will also discuss their possible involvement in some reproductive troubles known to be associated with features of metabolic syndrome, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia and intra-uterine growth retardation in women, and sperm abnormalities and testicular pathologies in men.

Abstract
Adipokines are a potential link between reproduction and energy metabolism and could partly explain some infertilities related to some pathophysiology, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, adipokines were predominantly assessed in blood samples, while very little is known concerning their variations in follicular fluid (FF) and ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) of PCOS women. Thus, the objectives of our study were to investigate adiponectin, chemerin, resistin, visfatin, omentin, and apelin ovarian expression in PCOS women in comparison with controls and women with only a polycystic ovary morphology. In total, 78 women undergoing an in vitro fertilization procedure were divided into three groups: 23 PCOS women, 28 women presenting only ≥12 follicles per ovary (ECHO group), and 27 control women. Each group almost equally included normal weight and obese women. Follicular fluid (FF) concentration and granulosa cells (GCs) mRNA expression of adipokines and their receptors were assessed by ELISA and RT-qPCR, respectively. Omentin levels in FF and GC were higher in PCOS than in ECHO and control women, while apelin expression was increased in both PCOS and ECHO groups. FF chemerin concentration was predominant in normal-weight PCOS women compared to BMI (Body Mass Index)-matched ECHO and control women, while GC mRNA levels were higher in the obese PCOS group than in the ECHO one. Compared to PCOS, ECHO women had increased FF adiponectin concentrations and lower plasma AMH levels. The FF concentration of all adipokines was higher in obese subjects except for adiponectin, predominant in normal-weight women. In conclusion, women with PCOS expressed higher GC chemerin and omentin, whereas the ECHO group presented higher levels of FF adiponectin and apelin and lower plasma AMH and LH concentrations. Chemerin, omentin, and apelin expression was differently regulated in women with PCOS, suggesting their possible role in follicular growth arrest and ovulatory dysfunction characterizing PCOS pathogenesis.

Abstract
Omentin-1 and prostate specific antigen (PSA) are known to be markers of insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism respectively in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aimed to assess the changes in serum omentin-1 and PSA levels in PCOS patients while on treatment. Serum omentin-1, PSA, BMI and Ferriman gallwey score (FG score) were measured in 80 women with PCOS. The subjects were treated depending on their presenting complaints. The parameters were analysed at baseline and after 3 months of treatment viz. lifestyle modification (Group I), oral contraceptive pills (OCP) (Group II), clomiphene citrate (Group III), medroxy progesterone acetate (Group IV) or metformin (Group V) and was compared using paired-t test. Group II showed significant increase in serum omentin-1 (271.7 ± 112.2 vs 378.1 ± 242 ng/ml; P = 0.025) and decrease in serum PSA (0.014 ± 0.02 vs 0.005 ± 0.008 ng/ml; P = 0.027) after 3 cycles of OCP. Group I and IV also showed a decrease in serum PSA while FG score decreased in group II and group III. There was a negative correlation observed between serum omentin-1 and BMI. To conclude, PCOS women showed increase in serum omentin-1 levels after 3 cycles of OCP while serum PSA decreased after 3 months of lifestyle modification or on treatment with OCP or medroxy progesterone acetate.

Abstract
Objective To determine serum chemerin, vaspin and omentin-1 in overweight and normal weight patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and investigate the possible relationship between these adipokines and metabolic syndrome. Methods This cross sectional study enrolled women with PCOS and healthy women. Serum chemerin, vaspin and omentin-1 were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. Results Forty patients with PCOS and 30 healthy controls were included in the study. In the PCOS group, 18 women were overweight (body mass index [BMI] = 25.0–29.9 kg/m2) and 22 had normal weight (BMI = 18.5–24.9 kg/m2). Chemerin, total cholesterol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate and free androgen index (FAI) were significantly higher; and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and sex hormone binding globulin were significantly lower in overweight PCOS patients compared with normal weight PCOS patients. A positive correlation was found between chemerin and BMI, triglyceride, insulin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance and FAI in the PCOS group. There was no difference in serum chemerin, vaspin and omentin-1 between PCOS patients and healthy controls. Conclusion Circulating chemerin was increased in overweight compared with normal weight PCOS patients. The most predictive variables for circulating chemerin in PCOS patients were BMI, FAI and age.

Abstract
Although numerous, human subject studies evaluating the relationship between circulating ghrelin levels and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) risk have yielded inconsistent findings. We aimed to quantitatively assess the association by summarizing all available evidence from human subject studies. The PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched up to February 2015 for eligible studies. Studies were eligible if they reported circulating ghrelin levels in women with PCOS and healthy women controls. A fixed or random-effects model was used to pool risk estimations. Twenty studies including 894 PCOS patients and 574 controls were included in the meta-analysis. The studies had fair methodological quality. The pooling analysis of all available studies revealed that ghrelin levels were significantly lower in PCOS patients than in controls, with standardized mean difference of -0.40 (95% CI: -0.73, -0.08). The significant association persisted in many subgroup strata. However, the heterogeneity across studies was considerable and not eliminated in subgroup analyses. Meta-regression analysis further suggested that the heterogeneity might be relevant to variability in study location, PCOS relevant factors like HOMA-IR ratio, as well as other factors not assessed. In conclusion, our meta-analysis suggested that ghrelin levels were significantly lower in PCOS patients than in controls. Further studies with large sample sizes are warranted to replicate our findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation is involved in the mechanism of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Omentin, a newly discovered adipokine, is thought to play an anti-inflammatory role. This study aimed to determine whether serum levels of omentin-1 are associated with the presence and disease activity of IBD. MATERIAL/METHODS This study consisted of 192 patients with IBD: 100 with Crohn's disease [CD], 92 with ulcerative colitis [UC], and 104 healthy subjects. Serum levels of omentin-1 were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS Serum omentin-1 levels were significantly decreased in CD and UC patients compared with healthy controls. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that serum omentin-1 levels were inversely associated with the presence of CD and UC. Active CD and UC patients both had significantly decreased levels of serum omentin-1 compared with inactive CD and UC patients. In both CD and UC patients, serum omentin-1 levels were significantly associated with decreased levels of body mass index (BMI) and C-reactive protein (CRP). CONCLUSIONS Decreased serum omentin-1 levels could be considered as an independent predicting marker of the presence and disease activity of IBD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM It remains challenging to determine the inflammatory activity in Crohn's disease (CD) for lack of specific laboratory markers. Recent studies suggest that serum omentin-1 is associated with inflammatory response. We aimed to assess the potential of serum omentin-1 as a marker of disease activity in CD patients. METHODS Serum omentin-1 concentrations were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in patients with CD (n = 240), functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGDs, n = 120), and healthy controls (HC, n = 60) and evaluated for correlation with disease activity. Expression of omentin-1 in colonic tissues from patients with CD was also analyzed by real-time PCR and Western blotting. Serum omentin-1 levels as an activity index were evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS Serum omentin-1 concentrations were significantly decreased in active CD patients compared with patients in remission, FGDs, and HC (all P < 0.001). Expression of omentin-1 was decreased at mRNA and protein levels in inflamed colonic tissues in active CD than that in noninflamed colonic tissues. Serum omentin-1 levels were negatively correlated with disease activity in CD, better than C-reactive protein (CRP). CONCLUSION Our results indicate that serum and colonic omentin-1 expressions are decreased in active CD patients. The correlation of serum omentin-1 with disease activity in CD is superior to that of CRP. Serum omentin-1 is a potential marker for CD disease activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dysregulation of omentin-1, a beneficial adipokine, is thought to play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between circulating omentin-1 concentrations and components of the metabolic syndrome in adults without type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease, and to determine if sex differences influenced the observed relationships. METHODS Fasting blood samples were obtained from 93 adults, ages 30-60 years, without type 2 diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease. Participants were classified as having the metabolic syndrome according to American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute criteria. Plasma omentin-1 concentrations were measured using a commercially-available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and relationships between plasma omentin-1 and components of the metabolic syndrome were assessed in the entire study cohort, by metabolic syndrome status, and by sex. RESULTS On average, participants were 48 ± 8 years of age, 50.5% were women, 54.8% were Caucasian, and 70% had the metabolic syndrome. Plasma omentin-1 concentrations did not differ significantly between individuals with versus without the metabolic syndrome (145.7 ± 70 versus 157.4 ± 79.3 ng/ml, p = 0.50). However, men with the metabolic syndrome had significantly lower omentin-1 levels than men without the metabolic syndrome (129.9 ± 66 versus 186.3 ± 84.3 ng/ml, p = 0.03). Plasma omentin-1 concentrations were significantly correlated with HDL cholesterol in the entire study cohort (r = 0.26; p = 0.01), which was primarily driven by a correlation in men (r = 0.451, p = 0.002) and participants with the metabolic syndrome (r = 0.36; p = 0.003). Plasma omentin-1 concentrations did not differ significantly between men and women; however men with the metabolic syndrome had 20% lower plasma omentin-1 levels than women with the metabolic syndrome (p = 0.06). CONCLUSION These data demonstrate that circulating omentin-1 levels are associated with HDL cholesterol, primarily in men and in the presence of the metabolic syndrome. In addition, sex appears to influence the relationship between plasma omentin-1 concentrations and components of the metabolic syndrome. Additional studies are needed to explore sexual dimorphism in circulating omentin-1 levels, and the role of omentin-1 in the metabolic syndrome.
