Shared Features or Co-occurrence? Evaluating Symptoms of Developmental Coordination Disorder in Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Motor differences are common in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but rarely evaluated against diagnostic criteria for Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). We aimed to determine whether motor problems in ASD represent the possible co-occurrence of DCD. We retrospectively reviewed standardized assessments and parent-reports to evaluate motor ability in 43 individuals with ASD against diagnostic criteria for DCD, and compared to 18 individuals with DCD. Over 97% of cases in the ASD group scored below the 16th percentile in motor ability, with most below the 5th percentile. Over 90% of cases in the ASD group met criteria for co-occurring DCD. Motor challenges are a clinically-significant problem in ASD; systematically assessing the prevalence of co-occurring ASD + DCD is necessary to optimize assessment and intervention.

[Strategies of planned physical activity in autism: systematic review]

OBJECTIVE

To identify the strategies used in the development of planned and scientifically documented physical activity, as well as the results achieved with those interventions in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

METHODS

Systematic analysis of scientific articles regarding the use of physical activity as a therapeutic tool for children with ASD. Articles published between 2006 and 2016 were included in the review. Participants in the selected articles had to be children diagnosed with ASD; the interventions carried out had to involve some kind of physical activity, and their effects had to be clearly exposed.

RESULTS

Six intervention strategies with autistic children were found.

DISCUSSION

Physical activity has a positive impact on the health and wellness of human beings, as well as a major role in the prevention of several chronic pathologies. Planned and correctly directed physical activity allows developing motor skills and generating positive psychological contexts and behavioral changes in children with ASD.

Looking Backward, Thinking Forward

As autism spectrum disorders become more prevalent and comprise a growing percentage of occupational therapists’ caseloads, it is important to examine trends in the literature. The purpose of this scoping review is to provide a historical analysis to illuminate changes and gaps in the occupational therapy literature related to autism spectrum disorders to inform the direction of research and practice. A total of 115 articles published in five occupational therapy journals in the United States from 1980 to 2013 were reviewed. Publications were coded by article type, with intervention studies coded in detail. Results indicated a consistent increase in number of publications as years progressed. Analysis by decade highlighted a shift from a biomedical focus to an occupation focus. Suggestions for future research include building a stronger evidence base, developing occupation-based assessments and interventions, and addressing needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families across the life span.

Review of occupational therapy intervention research in the practice area of children and youth 2009-2013

PURPOSE. We conducted a systematic review examining the extent to which pediatric intervention research recently published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy reflects occupational therapy's holistic occupation-based tenets. METHOD. We surveyed 10 systematic reviews and analyzed 38 single effectiveness studies for intervention approach, type, level of environmental targeting, level of occupational task and participation practice, and measures used. RESULTS. Of the 38 single effectiveness studies, 12 (32%) explicitly incorporated both environmental targets of intervention and practice of complex or in vivo occupational tasks, with steady increases during the 2009-2013 time frame. CONCLUSION. In the area of children and youth, occupational therapy is making steady gains in reflecting and demonstrating the effectiveness of the profession's holistic, occupation-based tenets. Occupational therapy researchers must be mindful to ensure that despite the reductionist nature of intervention research, interventions reflect the profession's holistic understanding of the interplay between the child, environment, and occupations.

Five years of mental health research in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, 2009-2013

In the past 5 years, the number of research articles on occupational therapy in mental health published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy has steadily declined. This article identifies the strengths and limitations of this body of research and provides directions for practitioners and researchers to enhance the profession's role as a valued mental health service provider.

Intervention Effectiveness for Children and Youth

We reviewed 11 articles, including efficacy and effectiveness studies, addressing intervention effectiveness for children and youth published in 2012 in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy and organized them by level and type of research according to a framework adapted from the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Compared with articles published in previous years, these studies showed improvement in their ability to guide practitioners to make evidence-based decisions by increasing understanding of the intervention’s pragmatic relevance and the extent to which it promotes participation in childhood and adolescent occupations. Studies’ evidence levels have increased along with efforts to increase scientific rigor. Intervention fidelity was included in several of the studies, but not consistently. Siblings and other family members were not examined, and none of the articles reviewed described longitudinal studies. Measures of client acceptability and cost–benefit analysis need more attention in future studies.

Análise de Comportamento Aplicada e Distúrbios do Espectro do Autismo: revisão de literatura

OBJETIVO: Realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura envolvendo as propostas de terapia baseada na análise de comportamento aplicada (ABA) dirigida a pessoas portadoras de distúrbios do espectro do autismo (DEA), contribuindo, dessa forma, para uma prática efetivamente baseada em evidências. ESTRATÉGIA DE PESQUISA: As bases de dados Web of Science, Medline, SciELO e Lilacs foram consultadas para o levantamento das referências bibliográficas publicadas nos últimos cinco anos. CRITÉRIOS DE SELEÇÃO: Foram selecionados os artigos publicados em periódicos com revisão por pares. Foram utilizados como critérios de exclusão o idioma, o tipo de artigo, o tema e os artigos repetidos. Essa seleção resultou em 52 artigos, que foram analisados na íntegra. ANÁLISE DOS DADOS: Foram consideradas as informações referentes a autor, periódico e data; título; tema e abordagem; casuística; critérios de inclusão e exclusão e conclusões. RESULTADOS: Os artigos abordam processos de intervenção, revisões de literatura, formação profissional e a contribuição dos pais no processo de intervenção. Apenas quatro artigos relatam a contribuição dos pais na aplicação dos princípios da ABA no ambiente doméstico. Os estudos sobre formação profissional enfatizam a valorização da formação especializada. A maioria das revisões de literatura conclui que os processos de intervenção são controversos, caros e dependentes de fatores externos. Embora artigos que relatam processos de intervenção envolvam 663 participantes, não é possível a realização de meta-análise devido à ausência de critérios de inclusão e caracterização comparáveis. CONCLUSÃO: Não há evidência suficiente para corroborar a preponderância da ABA sobre outras alternativas.
