Abstract
Aibika (Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medic) is a garden vegetable whose flower has been shown to have various bioactivities. This study investigated the protective effect of aibika flower flavonoid extract (AFF) on ethanol-induced gastric injury in mice. The experimental results showed that pre-feeding 125 and 250 mg AFF/kg BW for 1 week significantly reduced the gastric injury area in the negative control group from 19.2% to 6.7% and 0.6%, respectively. The results of the pathological sections staining also showed that AFF had a protective ability against alcohol-induced injury of gastric tissue and liver tissue. When the mice were exposed to high concentrations of ethanol, AFF pretreatment significantly upregulated the expression of antioxidant enzymes. The pretreatment also promoted the production of the intracellular antioxidant, reduced glutathione, in both gastric tissue and serum. On the contrary, AFF delayed the lipid peroxidation process, which, in turn, reduced the damage to the gastric mucosa. When acute inflammation was induced by ethanol stimulation, AFF significantly downregulated the proinflammatory cytokines and mediators such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, NF-κB, COX-2, and iNOS. Furthermore, AFF pretreatment greatly promoted the production of healing factors, such as matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-7, and MMP-9, in the gastric tissue. In addition, AFF significantly reduced gastric cell apoptosis induced by ethanol stimulation. These results demonstrate that AFF has a good protective effect on alcohol-induced gastric ulcer and has the potential to be used in gastrointestinal health care.

Abstract
Introduction The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between attentional impulsivity levels and physiological and psychological stress responses of university students. Methods 300 university students participated in the study. Four different data collection tools were used in the study: a personal information form, the Physiological Stress Response Inventory, and the Attentional Impulsivity Part of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Results We showed that attentional impulsivity of the participants is significantly related to both physiological stress responses (R2 = 0.04, F[1;267] = 11.45, p < 0.05) and psychological stress responses (R2 = 0.04, F[1;270] = 10.40, p < 0.05). At the same time, there is a significant negative association between physiological stress responses and psychological stress responses (r = -0.68). Conclusions The attentional impulsivity is an important variable for explaining changes in both physiological and psychological stress responses. Physiological and psychological stress responses should be considered as separate kinds of stress responses in stress response measurements.

Abstract
This study investigated the gastroprotective effect of Piper sarmentosum (PS) on stress-induced gastric ulcers in rats by measuring its effect on oxidative stress, gastric mucosal nitric oxide (NO), and inflammatory biomarkers. Twenty-eight male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups; two control groups (non-stress and stress) and two treated groups supplemented with either methanolic PS extract (500 mg/kg body weight) or omeprazole (OMZ; 20 mg/kg) orally. After 28 days of treatment, the stress control, PS, and OMZ groups were subjected to water-immersion restrain stress (WIRS) for 3.5 h. Gastric tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), NO, superoxide dismutase (SOD), inducible NO synthase (iNOS), SOD mRNA, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 levels were measured. WIRS significantly increased gastric MDA, NO, and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels compared to the non-stressed control group. PS and omeprazole supplementation significantly reduced WIRS-exposure-induced gastric ulcers and MDA, iNOS, and IL-1β levels. However, only PS reduced NO, TNF-α, and IL-6 levels, which were upregulated in this ulcer model. In conclusion, the gastroprotection afforded by PS is possibly mediated by gastric mucosal NO normalization through reduced iNOS expression and attenuation of inflammatory cytokines. PS showed a greater protective effect than omeprazole in reducing gastric lesions and NO, TNF-α, and IL-6 levels, and iNOS expression.

Characterization and Bioactive Potential of Secondary Metabolites Isolated from Piper sarmentosum Roxb. Int J Mol Sci 2023; 24:ijms24021328. Abstract
Piper sarmentosum Roxb. (Piperaceae) is a traditional medicinal plant in South-East Asian countries. The chemical investigation of leaves from this species resulted in the isolation of three previously not described compounds, namely 4″-(3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaroyl)-2″-β-D-glucopyranosyl vitexin (1), kadukoside (2), and 6-O-trans-p-coumaroyl-D-glucono-1,4-lactone (3), together with 31 known compounds. Of these known compounds, 21 compounds were isolated for the first time from P. sarmentosum. The structures were established by 1D and 2D NMR techniques and HR-ESI-MS analyses. The compounds were evaluated for their anthelmintic (Caenorhabditis elegans), antifungal (Botrytis cinerea, Septoria tritici and Phytophthora infestans), antibacterial (Aliivibrio fischeri) and cytotoxic (PC-3 and HT-29 human cancer cells lines) activities. Methyl-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propionate (8), isoasarone (12), and trans-asarone (15) demonstrated anthelmintic activity with IC50 values between 0.9 and 2.04 mM. Kadukoside (2) was most active against S. tritici with IC50 at 5.0 µM and also induced 94% inhibition of P. infestans growth at 125 µM. Trans-asarone (15), piperolactam A (23), and dehydroformouregine (24) displayed a dose-dependent effect against B. cinerea from 1.5 to 125 µM up to more than 80% inhibition. Paprazine (19), cepharadione A (21) and piperolactam A (23) inhibited bacterial growth by more than 85% at 100 µM. Only mild cytotoxic effects were observed.

Abstract
Opophytum forsskalii (O. forsskalii) is a desert plant that belongs to the Aizoaceae family. Although it is a natural food source for Bedouin tribes in northern Saudi Arabia, there is little information on its active metabolites. Therefore, the secondary metabolites of the hydroalcoholic extract from the leaves of this species were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass chromatography (LC-MS). LC-MS identified a total of 30 secondary metabolites. These compounds represented two main categories among sixteen classes. Among them, flavonoids represented the largest proportion with eleven metabolites while fatty acids provided seven compounds. In addition, the extract was evaluated for its gastroprotective effect against gastric lesions induced by different models, such as indomethacin, stress, and necrotizing agents (80% ethanol, 0.2 mol/L NaOH, and 25% NaCl), in rats. For each method, group 1 was used as the control group while groups 2 and 3 received the leaf extract at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg, respectively. The ulcer index (UI) and intraluminal bleeding score (IBS) were measured for each method. In addition, gastric tissue from the ethanol method was used for the analysis of nonprotein sulfhydrates (NP-SH), malondialdehyde (MDA), total protein (TP), and histopathologic evaluation. Pretreatment with O. forsskalii significantly decreased UI (p < 0.01) and IBS (p < 0.01) at 400 mg/kg. Pretreatment with O. forsskalii significantly improved total protein levels (p < 0.01) and NP-SH (p < 0.001) compared to the ethanol ulcer groups. MDA levels increased from 0.5 to 5.8 nmol/g in the normal groups compared to the ethanol groups and decreased to 2.34 nmol/g in the O. forsskalii pretreatment. In addition to the gastroprotective markers, histopathological examination of gastric tissue confirmed the gastroprotective potential of O. forsskalii extract against ethanol.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Determining differences and patterns in responses might help to understand over-excitability of students with high cognitive ability (SHCA) and to design treatments for helping them in controlling stress. METHODS A comparative research method was used with three different instruments. The data were analyzed by t-test and Welch's F-test. RESULTS The SHCA reported significantly higher frequencies of psychological stress responses whereas they expressed significantly lower frequencies of physiological stress responses than their counterparts. CONCLUSIONS These findings might lead to a discussion about the factors determining differences in the responses given by students with high cognitive ability under stress conditions.

Abstract
Stress-induced gastritis is a common problem in the intensive care unit. Zeaxanthin (ZE), a non-provitamin A carotenoid has been known to exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we examined the effect of ZE on water avoidance stress (WAS)-induced gastritis in rats. 24 Sprague' Dawley male rats were divided into four groups; control, ZE, WAS and WAS+ZE. In the stressed rats, treatment with ZE effectively downregulated the gastric levels of total oxidant status (TOS), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and malondialdehyde (MDA), with significant upregulation of the antioxidant enzymes' activities and gastric levels of prostagladin-E2 (PGE2) as compared to the untreated stressed one. As noticed in the present study, ZE significantly decrease the gastric levels of interleukin-1 β (IL-1β) and IL-6 as well as suppression of nuclear transcription factor kappa-B (NF-κB) immunohistochemical expression together with upregulation of trefoil factor-1 (TFF-1) gene expression. Moreover, in the untreated WAS-induced gastritis group, gastrin and corticosterone levels were significantly increased together with upregulation of the gene expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), PI3K, Akt and JNK in the gastric tissues, which significantly improved by ZE administration. These all positive effects of ZE reflected on reduction of microscopic gastric mucosal damage and inflammatory cell infiltration with improvement of ulcer score. Our results discover that ZE has a new gastroprotective effect against stress-induced gastritis in rats, primarily through its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects, which are expressed in the regulation of the MMP-9 and HIF-1α signaling pathways.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Piper sarmentosum Roxb. (Piperaceae) is a traditional medicinal plant widely distributed in India, Malaysia, Thailand, and the southeastern coastal areas of China including Fujian, Guangdong, and Guizhou. It has been used for centuries for the treatment of wind-cold cough, fever, rheumatism arthralgia, diarrhea dysentery, postpartum foot swelling, stomachache, toothache, diabetes, and traumatic injury. AIMS OF THE REVIEW To critically anayze the literature for the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicity, and clinical trials of P. sarmentosum in order to provide a scientific consensus for further research and discovery of potential candidate drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS The contents of this review were sourced from electronic databases including PubMed, SciFinder, Web of Science, Science Direct, Elsevier, Google Scholar, Chinese Knowledge On frastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, Chinese Scientific and Technological Periodical Database (VIP), Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), Cochrane Controlled register of Clinical Trials, Clinical Trials. gov, and Chinese Clinical Trial Registry. Chinese medicine books published over the years were used to elucidate the traditional uses of P. sarmentosum and additional information was also collected from Yao Zhi website (https://db.yaozh.com/). RESULTS Phytochemical analyses of the chemical constituents of P. sarmentosum include essential oil, alkaloids, flavonoids, lignans, and steroids. The literature supports the ethnomedicinal uses of P. sarmentosum for the treatment of cold, gastritis, and rheumatoid joint pain, and further confirms its relatively new pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, and antipyretic activities. Other biological roles such as anti-osteoporosis, antibacterial, antidepressant, anti-atherosclerotic, and hypoglycemic activities have also been reported. However, the methodologies employed in individual studies are limited. CONCLUSIONS There is convincing evidence from both in vitro and in vivo studies supporting the traditional use of P. sarmentosum and it is imperative that natural bioactive compounds are examined further. More efforts should be focused on the pharmacodynamic constituents of P. sarmentosum to provide practical basis for quality control, and additional studies are needed to understand the mechanism of their action. Further studies on the comprehensive evaluation of medicinal quality and understandings of serum chemistry, multi-target network pharmacology, and molecular docking technology of P. sarmentosum are of great importance and should be considered.
