Path to posttraumatic growth: The role of centrality of event, deliberate and intrusive rumination, and self blame in women victims and survivors of intimate partner violence

Increased interest in positive changes in the aftermath of traumatic events led researchers to examine assumptions about the process of posttraumatic growth (PTG). However, existing studies often use samples from mixed trauma survivors and investigate separate factors and their associations with growth. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the path from centrality of event to PTG involving intrusive and deliberate rumination and self-blame as a coping strategy in women survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). The study sample consisted of 200 women with a history of IPV (ages 18–69, M = 44.79, SD = 12.94). Results of the path analysis indicated that higher centrality of event was related to higher levels of intrusive rumination which was positively related to self-blame and deliberate rumination eventually leading to PTG. Indirect effects from centrality of event to PTG through intrusive and deliberate rumination, and from intrusive to deliberate rumination through self-blame were examined. This study gave support to some theoretical assumptions of the process of PTG and pointed out problematic areas of investigation of coping strategies in this process.

The impact of non-infection pandemic stress on depression and anxiety severity: Investigating mediation by intrusive and deliberate rumination

BACKGROUND

Social restrictions to curb COVID-19's spread have had adverse effects on population mental health. Rumination is one mechanism through which pandemic stress (PS) might translate into psychopathology. In particular, intrusive rumination (IR) is believed to be problematic. In this study, we investigated whether IR and deliberate rumination (DR) mediated the associations between PS and both depression and anxiety severity.

METHODS

1090 participants recruited online and from an undergraduate psychology participation pool completed an assessment of COVID-19 PS, as well as the Event-Related Rumination Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory-II, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Total scores for PS, IR, DR, depression, and anxiety severity were tested in a parallel mediation model.

RESULTS

PS positively predicted IR, DR, depression, and anxiety severity. IR positively predicted 1depression and anxiety severity, whereas DR did not. Indirect effects of PS on depression and anxiety severity were significant for IR, but not DR. Direct effects of PS on anxiety and depression severity were significant. Taken together, IR partially mediated the association between PS and both measures of psychopathology, and DR did not.

LIMITATIONS

This study was limited by its cross-sectional design and the lack of assessment of when PS exposure occurred.

CONCLUSIONS

Regarding PS that is unrelated to infection by COVID-19, IR is one mechanism through which psychopathology may emerge, whereas DR appears to be benign. Promoting a shift from IR to DR may therefore be one strategy for mitigating the negative effects of PS and other stressors on mental health.

Ruminations and occupational stress as predictors of post-traumatic stress disorder and burnout among police officers

The profession of policeman is one of the most stressful. It is associated with exposure to traumatic experiences. This research study aimed to determine the predictors of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and occupational burnout and to examine how they correlated in policemen. We searched for these predictors in cognitive activity, and specifically in ruminations and perceived job stress. The study was conducted with 120 police officers who have experienced traumatic events related to their job. The study showed that intrusive ruminations serve as a predictor that intensifies PTSD, while certain stressful work conditions are predictors of burnout. The results suggest that numerous mechanisms are at play in the pathogenesis of PTSD and burnout. Police officers cope much better with exposure to traumatic stressors than with stressful work conditions. This leads to a practical conclusion regarding the necessity of preventing the everyday job stress experienced by police officers.
