Physical Activity Protects Women with Type 1 Diabetes from Sexual Dysfunctions

The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between physical activity and sexual function in women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The study group consisted of 171 women with T1DM. All the participants voluntarily filled out anonymous questionnaires. Women who were sexually inactive or had some psychological, psychiatric, or endocrine diseases were excluded from the analysis. The scores about sexual function were obtained using a Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire. Results equal to or below 26 points indicate clinically significant sexual dysfunction. Physical activity was measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Participants were divided into two groups depending on the Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET-min/week) score with a cutoff point 3000 MET-min/week. Results above 3000 points indicate higher physical activity in woman. There were statistically significant differences in lubrication, orgasm, pain, satisfaction, and total score of FSFI. A positive correlation was revealed between results in total FSFI score and MET-min/week score (Rs = 0.18, p = 0.016). Univariate logistic regression does not show significant associations, but the multivariate logistic regression model shows an association between the MET-min/week and the total FSFI score. The higher the MET-min/week score, the higher the FSI score, and thus better sexual function.

Prevalence of sexual dysfunctions in women in their early and middle adulthood from the Pokarpackie Voivodeship

Background: Sexual dysfunctions are disorders related to the physiology of sexual responses. Aim of the study: Our study aimed to assess the prevalence of sexual dysfunctions in women in their early and middle adulthood. Material and methods: The early adulthood group consisted of 125 women aged 20–30, and out of these 100 questionnaires qualified for the final analysis. The middle adulthood group consisted of 275 women aged 45–55 in which 200 complete questionnaires were analyzed. The study was conducted in 2016 using a diagnostic survey method and the author's own survey questionnaire, the Mell-Krat Scale for Women and the Female Sexual Function Index (PL-FSFI). Results: Only 38.0% of respondents from the early adulthood group and 25.0% from the middle-adult group interviewed with a gynecologist about their sex life, possible disorders, and problems. Additionally, only 1.0% of women in the middle adulthood group benefited from the advice of a sexologist. According to the interpretation of the Mell-Krat scale, 41.0% of respondents in the early adulthood group and 76.0% of women in the middle adulthood group had a suboptimal score. These results indicate the possibility of sexual response disorders. All women in the early adulthood group and middle adulthood group scored below normal on the PL-FSFI scale indicating that the respondents are at risk for sexual disorders. Conclusions: According to the PL-FSFI scale, all women in the study may be at risk of sexual disorders. According to the Mell-Krat scale, as many as ¾ of women might suffer from sexual response disorders or are at risk of sexual disorders. Taking into account the significance of a sex life, it is necessary to take action to provide women with professional medical and psychological help to improve their intimacy sphere of life.

The importance of use of the FSFI questionnaire in gynecology and venerology: a pilot study

Introduction

The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) is recognized as an excellent tool for assessing female sexuality and screening female sexual dysfunction, but it also has important venereological implications as sexually transmitted diseases result from human behaviour in the sexual sphere. It is influenced by socio-economic, psychological and cultural factors.

Aim

To present the results of an attempt to implement FSFI in gynaecological practice.

Material and methods

The study comprised 91 women aged 20-35 (mean: 24.3 ±4.0) undergoing prophylactic gynaecological examinations. All of them voluntarily agreed to fill in the FSFI questionnaire, and provide data on weight, height, hormone treatments, the age of menarche and sexual initiation and information essential in health promotion and prevention, including the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

Results

The average age of the first sexual intercourse was 18.2 ±2.4. The total FSFI score ranged from 3.8 to 35.1 points (mean: 27.4 ±6.5). As many as 34.1% of the women presented with FSFI < 27.50, suggesting an increased risk of sexual dysfunction. Patients' age as well as the age of menarche were both negatively correlated with desire. The mean FSFI scores for almost all of the domains and the FSFI total score were higher for women taking oral contraceptives, although statistically significant differences were detected only for the orgasm domain.

Conclusions

A high percentage of sexually active Polish women presented with FSFI below the threshold, suggesting some grade of sexual dysfunction. Gynaecological and STI medical history should be extended to include issues related to female sexual function.

Should I Seek Help for Sexual Difficulties? Middle-Aged Lebanese Women's Views

This qualitative study explored the way middle-aged Lebanese women address their sexual difficulties. Data analysis revealed three overarching themes and subthemes. From these we developed a help-seeking behavior framework for sexual difficulties. The framework focuses on: the perception of the problem, the beliefs about help-seeking and the sources of help. This framework can be used to facilitate access to personalized sexuality-related care based on a better understanding of the complex interplay of personal, socio-cultural and service-related factors that influence help-seeking behavior for sexual problems.

Factors Conditioning Sexual Behavior in Older Adults: A Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies

The sexual behavior of older adults, especially women, has undergone changes in recent years, though there are still certain stereotypes today related to pathophysiology, beliefs, culture and tradition that negatively affect older adults’ sexual activity. The aim of our review is to present the main qualitative studies analyzing how physiological and psychosocial factors affect sexual behavior in older adults. A systematic review of these qualitative studies was carried out. All stages of this review were carried out peer-to-peer in order to guarantee minimized bias. A bibliographical search was completed between February and April 2019, in Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed Medline, PsycINFO ProQuest and CINAHL. To analyze the findings of the selected qualitative studies, a “Thematic Synthesis Analysis” was performed, using Eppi-Reviewer 4 software (UCL Institute of Education, University of London, UK). The quality of the studies was assessed with a CASP-Qualitative-Checklist. A total of 16,608 references were screened and 18 qualitative studies were included in this review. The studies involved 2603 participants across seven countries, most being women (approximately 80%). We identified a wide variety of physiological and psychological factors that can influence the sexual behavior of older adults, such as the presence of pathologies (erectile dysfunction and menopause), the strength of spiritual beliefs, and patriarchal roles upheld by upbringings conveying that women’s role is to provide men with sexual pleasure. Biological age in relation to stereotypical models of sexual behavior, emphasized as a risk factor in the contraction of sexual diseases, seems to play a relevant role as a factor limiting sexual behavior in older adults.

Sexual Dysfunction Is a More Common Problem in Young Women with Type 1 Diabetes than in Healthy Women

The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between the presence of type 1 diabetes and sexual dysfunction among young women. The study group consisted of 230 women, including 70 healthy and 160 with diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1). All the participants voluntarily filled anonymous questionnaire. The results regarding sexual function were obtained using a Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed for sexually active people. In the study group, 180 women declared sexual activity: 62 healthy (88%) and 118 with DM1 (82.5%). Women with DM1 in comparison with healthy women were older, had higher BMI, weight, and had more pack-years of cigarette smoking. Women with DM1 had lower results in FSFI and more often achieved scores below the clinical cutoff point. In a multiple linear regression model, the presence of diabetes predicted lower FSFI results. DM1 is independently associated with the presence of impaired sexual function. Sexual dysfunctions are more common among young women with DM1 than in healthy controls. The relationship is significant despite of the age, duration of diabetes, body weight, and presence of angiopathy.

Sexual Experience of Iranian Women in Their Middle Life: A Qualitative Approach

BACKGROUND

Sexual problems are common among the middle-aged women; however, there is no deep understanding of sexuality in midlife. The current study aimed to investigate Iranian women's attitudes and experiences about sexual life changes in midlife.

METHODS

This is a descriptive qualitative study. Seventeen women aged 40 -65 years old were purposively selected from urban health centers in Gorgan, Iran, in 2015. Face-to-face, semi-structured and in-depth interviews were conducted for data collection until data saturation was attained. The resulting data were analyzed based on Graneheim and Lundman's approach. MAXQDA 10 was used for organization of data.

RESULTS

Data analysis demonstrated seventh sub-themes and three themes. The emerged themes were entitled (1) "Continuous paradox over being a sexual agent" with three subthemes of beliefs on asexuality as socially accepted view for women in midlife, changing in motivation for sex and changing in sexual performance, (2) "Considering menopause; opportunities and threats for sexual life" with two subthemes of menopause related cons for sexual life and menopause related pros in sexual life, and (3) "Coping strategies for changes in sexuality in midlife" with two subthemes of different psychological reactions to changes that have influenced the sex and take practical steps for restoration of sexual attraction.

CONCLUSION

The findings demonstrated that middle-aged women in a male-dominant culture encounter paradox over being a sexual agent. In a bio-psycho-social approach, they perceived menopause as an opportunity or threat for their own sexuality. Following the conflicts, threats and changes of sexuality in midlife, they adopt diverse coping strategies to improve their sexual relationships and preserve their family.
