Abstract
AimsAbnormal vessel patterns are specific signs in patients with early cervical abnormality and cervical cancer(CC) by colposcopy, but the impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections on abnormal vessel patterns remains unknown.MethodsA total of 6716 female patients with HPV infections or cytological abnormalities who underwent a colposcopy following abnormal CC screening results were included in the study. The final pathological diagnosis was confirmed to be the most severe pathological grade across cervical biopsy, endocervical canal curettage (ECC) and conization. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the association between HPV infections and abnormal vessel patterns, adjusting for age, gravidity and parity.ResultsThere were 6124 normal vascular cases by colposcopy and 592 cases with cervical vascular abnormality. The prevalence of HPV infections was 4284 (70%) in normal patients, and the prevalence of HPV infections was 479 (80%) in cervical vascular abnormality patients. HPV high-risk type 16 infection alone increased the risk of cervical heteromorphic blood vessels (aOR=3.66, 95%CI: 2.54~5.27). HPV 16 and 33 alone (other than the commonly recognized subtype of 18) or coinfection of these two genotypes could increase the risk of cervical punctate vascular and cervical vascular mosaic features and abnormal cervical blood vessels. An increased risk of abnormal cervical lesions was observed for HPV 16 and 33 alone or combined in coinfection compared to the negative group. The risk of cervical vascular abnormality was increased 10-fold by coinfection with HPV 16 and 33 (aOR=10.67, 95% CI: 4.54~25.09, P<0.001). HPV 16, 33 alone or combined in coinfection were associated with an increased risk of lesions more advanced than high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) when compared to the negative group. The risk of lesions more advanced than HSIL was up to 26-fold higher in the coinfection with HPV 16 and 33 group than in the negative group (aOR=26.23, 95%CI: 11.23~61.27, P<0.001).ConclusionHPV16 and 33 are the most dangerous HPV genotypes correlated with abnormal vascular patterns. Combined HPV16 and HPV33 infection increases the risk of abnormal vascular patterns. Combined HPV16 and HPV33 infection increases the risk of developing HSIL+.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This meta-analysis summarized the prognostic role of an elevated platelet count before treatment on survival outcomes in patients with cervical cancer. METHODS The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library electronic databases were systematically searched for studies reporting the effect estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of pretreatment thrombocytosis on survival from the database inceptions to December 2018. The pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% CIs for overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were calculated using random-effects models. RESULTS Nineteen retrospective studies that recruited 6521 patients with cervical cancer were eligible for this study. The summary results indicated that an elevated platelet count was significantly associated with a poor OS (HR 1.50; 95% CI 1.19-1.88; P = 0.001), PFS (HR 1.33; 95% CI 1.07-1.64; P = 0.010), and RFS (HR 1.66; 95% CI 1.20-2.28; P = 0.002). Sensitivity analysis indicated that the pooled PFS was variable after sequential exclusion of individual studies. The predictive value of pretreatment thrombocytosis on OS differed according to the publication year (P = 0.039), country (P = 0.013), and sample size (P = 0.029), and the role of pretreatment thrombocytosis on PFS could be affected by the study quality (P = 0.046). CONCLUSION The findings of this study indicated that an elevated platelet count before treatment was associated with poor OS, PFS, and RFS. These results require further verification in large-scale prospective studies.

Abstract
Previous studies reported inconsistent findings about the relationship between pretreatment thrombocytosis and survival in patients with cervical cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of thrombocytosis in cervical cancer. We searched databases to identify relevant articles. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs), odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Fourteen studies including 3,394 patients were eligible for the meta-analysis. Overall, an elevated platelet count was significantly associated with inferior overall survival (OS, hazard ratio [HR]: 1.66, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.42–1.95, P < 0.001) and recurrence-free survival (RFS, HR: 1.67, 95% CI: 1.15–2.42, P = 0.007) but not progression-free survival (PFS, HR: 1.21, 95% CI: 0.89–1.64; P = 0.235). The results were similar for low stage patients treated with surgery alone. Moreover, a pretreatment thrombocytosis status was significantly associated with higher clinical stage (odd ratio [OR]: 2.39, 95% CI: 1.68–3.38, P < 0.001), positive pelvic node status (OR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.01– 2.45, P = 0.044) and larger tumor size (OR: 2.32, 95% CI: 1.39–3.87, P = 0.001). Pretreatment thrombocytosis is an independent prognosis predictor in cervical cancer patients. It may be used as a readily available biomarker to refine clinical outcome prediction for cervical cancer patients.

Abstract
Dysfunctional Fas ligand (FasL) may inhibit the apoptosis of tumor cells. FasL contains two receptors, Fas and Decoy Receptor 3 (DcR3). DcR3 competitively binds to FasL over Fas, resulting in the inhibition of FasL-mediated apoptosis. Therefore, it was suggested that the downregulation of DcR3 expression enhances FasL-mediated apoptosis. In the current study, the expression of DcR3 was silenced in liver cancer HepG2 cells in order to study the effect of FasL on HepG2 cell activity and invasiveness. DcR3 siRNA knockdown HepG2 cells (KD), DcR3 blank plasmid control HepG2 cells and wild-type HepG2 cells (WT) were treated with FasL (10 ng/ml). Flow cytometry was used to detect changes in the cell cycle and apoptosis. MTS, clonogenic, wound healing and Transwell assays were performed to examine changes in cell activity, proliferation, migration and invasiveness. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis were performed to measure the expression of DcR3, matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C and VEGF-D. The results demonstrated that, compared with WT cells, the proportion of KD cells in the G2/M phase decreased following treatment with FasL. KD cells were more sensitive to FasL-induced apoptosis. Following treatment with FasL, the activity and proliferation, migration and invasion of KD cells were reduced, and the expression of MMP9, VEGF-C and VEGF-D decreased. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that DcR3 is involved in the proliferation and invasion of HepG2 cells, and this mechanism may be associated with the regulatory effect of the expression of MMP9, VEGF-C and VEGF-D; however, the exact mechanism of action remains unclear. FollowingDcR3 silencing, FasL-mediated apoptosis increased in HepG2 cells. Therefore, DcR3 combined with FasL may be a potential target for the treatment of liver cancer.

Abstract
VEGF and podoplanin (PDPN) have been identified as angiogenesis and/or lymphangiogenesis regulators and might be essential to restrict tumor growth, progression, and metastasis. In the present study, we evaluate the association between the expression of these markers and CIN grade. Immunohistochemistry was performed in 234 uterine cervical samples using conventional histologic sections or TMA with the monoclonal antibodies to VEGF (C-1 clone) and podoplanin (D2-40 clone). Positive-staining rates of VEGF in 191 CIN specimens were significantly associated with histological grade (P < 0.001). Negative and/or focal immunostaining for PDPN were more frequent in CIN 3 (P = 0.016). We found that patients with CIN 3 more frequently had strong and more diffuse staining for VEGF and diminished staining for PDPN (P = 0.018). Strong and more diffuse VEGF immunoexpressions in CIN 2 and CIN 3 were detected when compared to CIN 1. Negative and/or focal PDPN immunoexpression appear to be more frequent in CIN 3. Moderate to strong VEGF expression may be a tendency among patients with high-grade lesions and diminished PDPN expression.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Retrospective evaluation of cervical smear results of women who attended our gynecology policlinics with various symptoms and discussion of the results in the light of the literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS We performed a retrospective investigation on 37,438 Pap smear results of women who attended our hospital between January 2011 and December 2012 with a variety of symptoms. RESULTS Average patient age was 43 (18-83) years. Of the Pap smear results analyzed, in 21,503 (57.4%) findings were within normal limits, while 153 (0.41%) showed epithelial cell abnormalities and 15,358 (41%) showed inflammation. Four hundred and twenty-four (1.1%) cases were reported to have inadequate Pap smear samples for evaluation. Of the epithelial cell abnormalities, 136 (88.8%) were squamous cell abnormalities and 17 (11.1%) were glandular cell abnormalities. Atypical squamous cells of unknown significance (ASCUS) were reported for 117 (0.3%) Pap smears, while other epithelial abnormalities included atypical glandular cells of unknown significance (AGUS) in 17 (0.05%) cases, low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) in 8 (0.02%) cases, atypical squamous cells with possible high grade lesion (ASC-H) in 8 (0.02%) cases and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) in 3 (0.008%) cases. CONCLUSIONS Public awareness should be raised on the importance of Pap smear testing repeated at appropriate intervals in the prevention and early diagnosis of cervical cancer. Health education should become more widespread, and the importance of screening programs and regular check-ups should be emphasized more often on this issue in the media.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most frequent mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal system. We aimed to determine whether nuclear transcription factor κB (NF-κB), CD9 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have prognostic value in patients with GIST. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-five patients with GIST, who were diagnosed in the Pathology Department of Erciyes University, were included in the study. Cases were classified based on the 2002 NIH consensus. CD9, VEGF, and NF-κB immunohistochemistry were applied to GIST cases positive for CD117 and CD34, which are used to evaluate GISTs immunohistochemically. RESULTS Although there are no statistically significant differences between NF-κB (p = 0.329), CD9 (p = 0.269), and VEGF (p = 0.372) and risk groups, 79.22% of cases that stained positive for NF-κB, 81% of cases that stained positive for CD9, and 80% of cases that stained positive of VEGF were in the high risk group. CONCLUSIONS It was found that NF-κB, CD9, and VEGF, which are important in predicting behaviors of other malign tumors, were expressed at high rates in high risk group GISTs. This can be used to determine prognosis with tumor diameter, mitosis rate under 50 BBS, Ki-67 proliferation index and other parameters.
