Abstract
Radiation-induced damage to salivary glands (SG) is a consequence of radiotherapy for head and neck cancers. Recovery of the irradiated SG has been studied using various regenerative approaches. This study aims to compare the regenerative potentials of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMCs) on irradiated rat submandibular salivary glands (SMD). 32 healthy male albino rats were irradiated with a single dose of 6 Gy then classified into four groups. Group A received no treatment while the other 3 groups were injected 24 h post-radiation with a single dose of either; BMMCs (Group B), PRP (Group C), or BMMCs suspended in PRP (Group D). SMD regeneration was assessed in terms of histological changes and TGF- β1 gene expression. The results showed that compared to the untreated group all groups showed successful regeneration with group D showing the best results. A statistically significant increase in the surface area of acini and TGF- β1 gene expression was observed in group D, followed by group C, then B. Our results prove that using PRP and BMMCs could be promising in decreasing irradiation side effects on SG. Moreover, combining PRP and BMMCs gives better effects compared to each therapy alone.

Abstract
Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) has harmful effects on body organs, including submandibular salivary glands (SMGs). It impairs wound healing process that follow sialoadenectomy. Yet there is no complete cure to diabetes, the available medications tend to control the side effects of DM or manage insulin resistance. Herein we tried to investigate the possible effects of injectable platelet rich fibrin (i-PRF) and melatonin on wound healing in diabetic rats. Material and methods Surgical defects were created in SMGs of 30 rats after confirmation of DM induction. Then rats were randomly and equally allocated into three groups. Group I served as control group; group II received topically applied i-PRF, and group III received topically administrated melatonin. After 28 days all rats were euthanized, and SMGs were processed for histological and biochemical analysis. Results Both i-PRF and melatonin caused significant reduction of malondialdehyde (P < 0.0001) and caspase-3 (P < 0.001) and significant increase in vascular endothelial growth factors (P = 0.001,0.009 respectively) that increased SMGs regenerative capacity when compared to diabetic group. Melatonin showed superior results regarding the histomorphological structure of SMGs. Conclusion Melatonin and i-PRF can be possible candidates for improvement of wound healing events in SMGs of diabetic rats.

Abstract
Development and maturation of submandibular salivary glands are influenced by intrauterine diabetic environment. Several studies investigated the effects of diabetes on the salivary glands. However, the effects of maternal diabetes on the submandibular glands of the offspring was not properly examined. Therefore, the present study was designed to describe the changes in the development of the submandibular glands of the offspring of diabetic mothers. The submandibular glands of the offspring of Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic female rats were examined at two and four weeks after birth. Detection of mRNA demonstrated that maternal diabetes affects the level of different indicators. The reduction of expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF); a protein mitogen, cytokeratin 5 (CK5); an epithelial cell progenitor, CK7 and aquaporin 5 (AQP5); differentiation markers and B cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl2); an antiapoptotic marker were found. Increase in Bcl2-associated X protein (Bax); an apoptotic marker was detected. These changes indicate their effects on saliva secretion, glands tumorigenesis, growth of normal oral flora and oral microbes, with decreased protein synthesis and production of xerostomia and dental caries. Loss of normal glandular architecture, significant increase in fibrosis, by the detection of collagen fibers, and stagnation of secretory granules were found with atrophic changes in the acinar cells. Marked defect of polysaccharides in the acinar cells, denoting functional changes, was manifested by significant reduction of the intensity of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reaction. The positive immunoreactivity of caspase-3, denoting cellular apoptosis, and minimal reaction of alpha-smooth muscle actin (α SMA) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were evident in the offspring of diabetic mothers. We conclude that maternal diabetes produces degenerative effects in the structure and function of the submandibular salivary glands of the offspring, reflecting possible influences on their secretory activity affecting oral and digestive health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AIMS Parotid hypofunction causes life-disrupting effects, and there are no effective medications for xerostomia. We hypothesized that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have repairing effects on parotid glands of ovariectomized (OVX) rats. METHODS Forty-five adult female rats were divided into three equal groups: group I (Control group), group II (OVX-group) and group III (OVX rats that received MSCs at 4 and 8 weeks post-ovariectomy). At 12 weeks post-ovariectomy, histological (Masson's trichrome and periodic acid-Schiff with alcian blue stains), immunohistochemical (caspase-3 and CD44) and morphometric studies and salivary flow rate and saliva pH determination were carried out. RESULTS Histologically, the OVX group displayed numerous irregular vacuolated acini, thickened septa with marked cellular infiltration and vascular congestion. Degenerated organelles and few or irregular secretory granules with a different density were observed. Caspase-3-positive cells were highly expressed. MSC-treated glands exhibited a considerable degree of preservation of glandular architecture with numerous CD44-expressing and few caspase-3-expressing cells. Significant decrease of the salivary flow rate in the OVX group was detected, which reverted to normal levels in group III. CONCLUSIONS MSCs ameliorated the damaging effects of ovariectomy on the parotid glands.

Abstract
Oral diseases associated with systematic diseases as metabolic and vasculitic have been included in this paper. This will enhance our understanding of the salivary function in promoting healthy oral condition. The study investigates the effects of type I and type II diabetes mellitus in well-controlled diabetic patients, in addition to Behçet disease (BD) on saliva flow rate (SFR), pH, the decay, missing, and filled tooth (DMFT) index, glucose, and major earth-alkaline ions (Ca2+ and Mg2+) compared to healthy males and age-matched controls. Saliva samples were collected from 1403 male human subjects, distributed on 7 levels including 3 control groups, and analyzed. The symptoms and clinical observations were enrolled. A preprandial salivary glucose has illustrated statistically strong significant and positive correlations with HbA1c and blood glucose levels. TIDM saliva showed lower pH, SFR, and Ca2+ but higher Mg2+, caries risk, and poor metabolic control. These led to dysfunction of secretory capacity of salivary glands. TIIDM proved higher SFR, DMFT, and glucose than TIDM patients. DM oral calcium has decreased by age while magnesium sharply slopes at seniority. BD oral fluid is associated with lower glucose and minerals but noticeably with both higher pH and DMFT.

Abstract
The objective of study is to study the peculiarities of morphological changes in different subdivisions of the intralobular duct of the submandibular gland (SMG) in rats in case of experimental diabetes mellitus (DM). The study included sexually mature male Wistar rats. Experimental DM was induced by streptozotocin. Electron microscopic study of subdivisions of the intralobular duct of the SMG was carried out on the 14th, 28th, 42nd, 56th, and 70th days of the experiment. In early stages of experimental DM the intercalated ducts are characterized by a relatively unchanged structure, and in late stages vacuolization of the cytoplasm of their epithelial cells is observed. Since the 14th day vacuolization of mitochondria is observed in epithelial cells of the granular ducts being the most pronounced on the 28th day and not apparent over the subsequent periods. The degree of filling with granules reduces till 56th day, however, it increases sligthly on the last day of the experiment. On the 28th-70th days vacuolization of the cytoplasm is observed in epithelial cells of the striated ducts. In addition, on the 14th day the mitochondrial matrix of these cells condenses; over the next periods it becomes enlightened and mitochondrial cristae are clearly visualized and disorganized. CONCLUSION In the intralobular duct of the SMG in experimental DM dystrophic changes of different intensity occur in the granular and striated ducts on the 14th day and in the intercalated ducts only since the 42nd day of the experiment.
