Comparison of the levels of knowledge and approaches in relation with child abuse and neglect in residents of pediatrics, pediatricians and practitioners working in the province of Ankara

Effectiveness of the training provided to healthcare professionals in Turkey to recognise the symptoms and risks of child abuse and neglect

Healthcare professionals have a significant role to play in the early diagnosis of child abuse and neglect (CAN), which is important in terms of protecting children's health. The study aimed to measure the change in the participants' level of diagnosing the risks and symptoms of CAN before and after the training by providing a training program to healthcare professionals including the signs of CAN, symptoms and procedures to be followed in this case. All healthcare professionals working in a State Hospital and Family Health Centers in Tunceli, Turkey, and who volunteered to participate in the study were included in the study (n = 125). The data were collected before and after the training by using the Personal Information Form and The Diagnosis Scale of the Risks and Symptoms of Child Abuse and Neglect (DSRSCAN). 39 participants (31.2%) reported that they had previously suspected CAN, and 35 (28%) stated that they had encountered CAN before. The mean DSRSCAN score of the healthcare professionals included in the study before the training was 3.38 (lowest =2.37, highest =3.55), while after the training, it went up to 3.60 (lowest =2.76, highest =5.00), and the difference between the pre-training and post-training DSRSCAN scores was determined to be statistically significant (p < 0.001). It was determined that when healthcare professionals were trained on CAN, their awareness could be further strengthened. Hence, training programs for healthcare professionals on diagnosing and reporting CAN should be updated and increased.

Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness among Medical Students

Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and various forms of neglect of children have been encountered more frequently by healthcare providers, particularly physicians. However, mismanagement of child abuse and neglect (CAN) due to a lack of awareness of it can lead to substantial and serious consequences. This study primarily aimed to evaluate the awareness of CAN among medical students and compare it between preclinical and clinical males and females in Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study using a self-reported-based questionnaire was carried out to study child abuse and neglect awareness and compare preclinical and clinical male versus female medical students during the first semester in 2021/2022. The majority of the participants were aware of CAN (90.6%), agreed that CAN exists locally (96.6%), believed that CAN is important in the medical field (96.3%), and expressed the important role of physicians in participating in the management of CAN (84.3%). Some students did not know about the legislation of CAN in Saudi Arabia (15%). The results show a lack of exposure to real CAN cases (80.3%) and the need for more formal education (70.3%). In general, the students were comparable, but there were significant differences showing more awareness in female students compared to males and, similarly, more awareness in clinical-year students. Both clinical and preclinical medical students were aware of CAN, with some concerns regarding their competency in dealing with CAN. CAN should be given more weight in the medical school curriculum.

Effect of training about child neglect and abuse to teachers and its effect to awareness

Background

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of child neglect and abuse training on the knowledge and awareness of medical vocational schoolteachers in Turkey.

Methods

This study was conducted based on data taken from a sample of teachers from Kayseri, Turkey, between October 2016 and April 2017. Teachers who agreed to participate in the study received training pertaining to child neglect and abuse. Data were collected through a survey form and the Scale for Identifying the Symptoms and Risks of Child Abuse and Neglect. Data were analyzed using SPSS V.20.0 software. For statistical analyses, Student’s t test, analysis of variance and McNemar tests were conducted, with a value of p <  0.05 being considered statistically significant.

Results

Of teachers in the sample, 63.7% were female, and 80.5% were married. Teachers’ mean age was 40.5 ± 9.9 years. Among teachers, 87.4% reported that the training was sufficient. Teachers’ level of knowledge concerning neglect and abuse and the percentage of teachers who reported that they would report such situations to the authorities when faced with such a case increased after training. Female teachers’ scores on the neglect and abuse scale increased among teachers without children and those who found the training to be sufficient.

Conclusions

The knowledge level of teachers in the study group was found to be increased compared to their knowledge level prior to training. The subject of child neglect and abuse should be further discussed in the context of teachers’ formal training.
