Impact of halogen chemistry on summertime air quality in coastal and continental Europe: application of the CMAQ model and implications for regulation

Modeling the Oxygen Isotope Anomaly (Δ17O) of Reactive Nitrogen in the Community Multiscale Air Quality Model: Insights into Nitrogen Oxide Chemistry in the Northeastern United States

Atmospheric nitrate, including nitric acid (HNO3), particulate nitrate (pNO3), and organic nitrate (RONO2), is a key atmosphere component with implications for air quality, nutrient deposition, and climate. However, accurately representing atmospheric nitrate concentrations within atmospheric chemistry models is a persistent challenge. A contributing factor to this challenge is the intricate chemical transformations involving HNO3 formation, which can be difficult for models to replicate. Here, we present a novel model framework that utilizes the oxygen stable isotope anomaly (Δ17O) to quantitatively depict ozone (O3) involvement in precursor nitrogen oxidesN O x = N O + N O 2 photochemical cycling and HNO3 formation. This framework has been integrated into the US EPA Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system to facilitate a comprehensive assessment of NO x oxidation and HNO3 formation. In application across the northeastern US, the model Δ17O compares well with recently conducted diurnal Δ17O(NO2) and spatiotemporal Δ17O(HNO3) observations, with a root mean square error between model and observations of 2.6 ‰ for Δ17O(HNO3). The model indicates the major formation pathways of annual HNO3 production within the northeastern US are NO+OH (46 %), N2O5 hydrolysis (34 %), and organic nitrate hydrolysis (12 %). This model can evaluate NO x chemistry in CMAQ in future air quality and deposition studies involving reactive nitrogen.

Impact and pathway of halogens on atmospheric oxidants in coastal city clusters in the Yangtze River Delta region in China

Halogens (chlorine, bromine, and iodine) are known to profoundly influence atmospheric oxidants (hydroxyl radical (OH), hydroperoxyl radical (HO2), ozone (O3), and nitrate radical (NO3)) in the troposphere and subsequently affecting air quality. However, their impact on atmospheric oxidation and air pollution in coastal areas in China is poorly characterized. In this study, we use the WRF-CMAQ (Weather Research and Forecasting-Community Multiscale Air Quality) model with full halogen chemistry and process analysis to assess the influences and pathways of halogens on atmospheric oxidants in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, a typical coastal city cluster in China. Halogens cause the annual OH radical increase by up to 16.4% and NO3 decrease by up to 45.3%. O3 increases by 2.0% in the YRD but decreases by 3.3% in marine environment. Halogen induced changes in atmospheric oxidants lead to a general increase of atmospheric oxidation capacity by 5.1% (maximum 48.4%). The production rate of OH (POH) in the YRD is enhanced by anthropogenic chlorine through both increased HO2 pathway and hypohalous acid photolysis pathway, while POH over ocean is enhanced by oceanic halogens through converting HO2 into hypohalous acid. Anthropogenic chlorine enhances both O3 and NO3 production (PNO3) rates through influencing their precursors while oceanic halogens reduce PNO3 and directly destroy ozone. Iodine contributed most (on average of 91% in oceanic halogens) in reducing production rates of oxidants. Thus, halogen emissions and potential effects of halogens on air quality need to be considered in air quality policies and regulations in the YRD region.

Oxidation capacity changes in the atmosphere of large urban areas in Europe: Modelling and experimental campaigns in atmospheric simulation chambers

Air pollution is a major concern for human health and the environment. Consequently, environmental standards have become stricter to improve air quality. Thanks to this, the ambient levels of O3 precursors such as VOCs and NOX have decreased. However, O3 levels in Europe, especially during winter, have increased, potentially impacting on atmospheric oxidation capacity and the associated chemistry of tropospheric oxidants. In this work, we focus on recent changes in the oxidation capacity of urban atmospheres. The study is conducted with the results of the CMAQ modelling system with a regional resolution with 12 × 12 km2 across the entire European continent for the winter (January) and summer (July) of 2007 and 2015. The 2015 meteorological data is used for both years to emphasise emission changes during the studied period. We scrutinise the changes in ambient concentration levels of the main tropospheric oxidants (O3 and HOX radicals) in five representative cities, Valencia, Madrid, Milan, Berlin, and The Hague. The enhanced O3 formation in winter seems to be due to the low VOC/NOX ratio, while the opposite trend in summer may be related to a relatively high ratio. Additionally, photooxidation experiments are carried out in the EUPHORE chambers to study the effect of changes in NOX concentration and NO/NO2 ratio on the variation of the given oxidants at constant VOCs concentrations. For the baseline experiments, two scenarios are selected based on the model results of 2015: two representative winter and summer days of low and high pollution in Berlin and Madrid, respectively. The role of VOC/NOX and NO/NO2 ratios on atmospheric reactivity is discussed. As a result, it is first suggested that further decreases in ambient NOX levels are required to reduce ambient O3 levels. Moreover, additional factors should be considered when designing local-specific emission abatement strategies.

The effects of the gas-liquid interface and gas phase on Cl/ClO radical interaction with water molecules

In the marine boundary layer (MBL), chlorine (Cl) and chlorine monoxide (ClO) are powerful oxidants with high concentrations. The gas-liquid interface is also ubiquitous in the MBL as a favorable site for atmospheric reactions. Understanding the role of water in Cl/ClO radical chemistry is essential for predicting their behavior in the atmosphere and developing effective strategies for mitigating their harmful effects. However, the research studies on the system of Cl/ClO radicals on the surface of water droplets are still insufficient. In previous studies, we have found unique results related to the hydroxyl radical at the interface using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). In this work, we have used AIMD to investigate interactions between Cl/ClO radicals and water molecules at the gas-liquid interface. Radical mobility, radial distribution functions, coordination, and population analyses were conducted to investigate the surface preference, bonding pattern, and track Cl/ClO radicals in the water droplets. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) analysis was conducted to compare the results at the gas-liquid interface with those in the gas phase. We found that Cl/ClO radicals tend to remain near the gas-liquid interface in water droplet systems and outside of water clusters in gas phase systems. The ClO radical can form O*-H and Cl-O bonds with water molecules; however, neither the O*-O hemibond nor the Cl-H bond was detected in all systems. Different dominant structures were obtained for ClO in the interface and gas phase. The ClO radical can be bonded to one water molecule from its oxygen side, (H2O)0-Cl-O*-(H2O)1 at the interface, or to two water molecules from the chlorine and oxygen sides, (H2O)1-Cl-O*-(H2O)1 in the gas phase. Meanwhile, the Cl radical can only form a dominant structure like Cl*-(H2O)1 at the gas-liquid interface by making a Cl*-O hemibond. Providing a thorough explanation of the Cl/ClO radical behavior at the gas-liquid interface, this study will improve our understanding of the MBL's oxidizing capacity and pollution causes.

Potential deterioration of ozone pollution in coastal areas caused by marine-emitted halogens: A case study in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

Ozone (O₃) is one of the most important air pollutants worldwide in terms of its great damage to human health and agriculture. Previous studies show that marine-emitted halogens significantly influence O₃ concentrations, mainly through the consumption of O₃ by bromine and iodine atoms. In this study, we investigate the temporal variation at finer time scales (daily and hourly) than previous studies (annual or monthly) to better characterize the influence of marine-emitted halogens on coastal O₃. In contrast to previous studies that mainly reported a decrease in O₃, our results show significant temporal variations in halogen-induced O₃ changes. More specifically, the halogen-induced decrease in coastal O₃ in southern China is concentrated on clean days, while an unexpected increase in some regions of up to >10 ppbv could occur on polluted days. On polluted days, the activation of particulate chloride (Cl^-) in sea salt aerosol (SSA) is effective due to the high level of dinitrogen pentoxide (N₂O₅) that is formed from the reactions of O₃ and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). In addition, the wind fields are unfavorable for the transport of marine air masses with large O₃ depletion inland. These two factors together result in the increase in hourly and MDA8 O₃ on polluted days in some regions in the GBA. The locations of O₃ increases are controlled by the distribution of nitryl chloride (ClNO₂) at sunrise, which is influenced by O₃ and NO₂ during the previous night. As a result, the increase in O₃ is a continuation of the O₃ pollution from the previous day, and the whole area is under potential threat of this worsening pollution.

Analysis of emissions-driven changes in the oxidation capacity of the atmosphere in Europe

Anthropogenic emissions in Europe have been gradually reduced thanks to a combination of factors, including restrictive regulation and policy implementation, fuel switching, technological developments, and improved energy efficiencies. Many measures have been specifically introduced to meet the annual and hourly limit value of NO₂ for the protection of human health, mainly targeting traffic emissions. Due to NO_X reduction policies in Europe, NO₂ levels have generally declined, but O₃ concentrations have been found to increase. This phenomenon would cause changes in the oxidant capacity of the atmosphere, altering the concentration of tropospheric oxidants in urban areas. The Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modelling system has been used to study concentration changes of NO₂, O₃ and the main radicals in Europe between 2007 and 2015 for two months representatives of winter and summer conditions (January and July). In addition to describing the general situation in Europe, variations in pollutants along with NO_X emission changes over 67 large European cities have been analysed by means of statistical methods. NO_X emissions and NO₂ concentrations decreased in both seasons during the period in all the selected cities. In most of them O₃ concentrations increased in winter but decreased in summer. The concentration of the OH radical, the main oxidant during the daytime, shows an increase in winter. This is also the case for the main cities in summer although we found a general decrease in continent for this season. The NO₃ radical, the main night-time oxidant, was found to increase in winter and decrease in summer. HNO₃ shows a concentration decline in both seasons. The studied cities are classified in five groups by means of k-mean clustering procedure. We identified five groups with specific patterns, suggesting that the oxidant capacity of the European urban atmospheres has reacted differently to NO_X emission abatement policies.

Theoretical study of the NO3 radical reaction with CH2ClBr, CH2ICl, CH2BrI, CHCl2Br, and CHClBr2

The potential reaction of the nitrate radical (NO₃), the main nighttime atmospheric oxidant, with five alkyl halides, halons (CH₂ClBr, CH₂ICl, CH₂BrI, CHCl₂Br, and CHClBr₂) has been studied theoretically. The most favorable reaction corresponds to a hydrogen atom transfer. The stationary points on the potential energy surfaces of these reactions have been characterized. The reactions can be classified into two groups based on the number of hydrogen atoms in the halon molecules (1 or 2). The reactions with halons with only one hydrogen atom show more exothermic profiles than those with two hydrogen atoms. In addition, the kinetics of the reaction of NO₃ + CH₂BrI was studied in much higher detail using a multi-well Master Equation solver as a representative example of the nitrate radical reactivity against these halocarbons. These results indicate that the chemical lifetime of the alkyl halides would not be substantially affected by nitrate radical reactions, even in the case of NO₃-polluted atmospheric conditions.

Global Emissions of Hydrogen Chloride and Particulate Chloride from Continental Sources

Gaseous and particulate chlorine species play an important role in modulating tropospheric oxidation capacity, aerosol water uptake, visibility degradation, and human health. The lack of recent global continental chlorine emissions has hindered modeling studies of the role of chlorine in the atmosphere. Here, we develop a comprehensive global emission inventory of gaseous HCl and particulate Cl- (pCl), including 35 sources categorized in six source sectors based on published up-to-date activity data and emission factors. These emissions are gridded at a spatial resolution of 0.1° × 0.1° for the years 1960 to 2014. The estimated emissions of HCl and pCl in 2014 are 2354 (1661-3201) and 2321 (930-3264) Gg Cl a-1, respectively. Emissions of HCl are mostly from open waste burning (38%), open biomass burning (19%), energy (19%), and residential (13%) sectors, and the major sources classified by fuel type are combustion of waste (43%), biomass (32%), and coal (25%). Emissions of pCl are mostly from biofuel (29%) and open biomass burning processes (44%). The sectoral and spatial distributions of HCl and pCl emissions are very heterogeneous along the study period, and the temporal trends are mainly driven by the changes in emission factors, energy intensity, economy, and population.

Role of Iodine Recycling on Sea-Salt Aerosols in the Global Marine Boundary Layer

Heterogeneous uptake of hypoiodous acid (HOI), the dominant inorganic iodine species in the marine boundary layer (MBL), on sea-salt aerosol (SSA) to form iodine monobromide and iodine monochloride has been adopted in models with assumed efficiency. Recently, field measurements have reported a much faster rate of this recycling process than previously assumed in models. Here, we conduct global model simulations to quantify the range of effects of iodine recycling within the MBL, using Conventional, Updated, and Upper-limit coefficients. When considering the Updated coefficient, iodine recycling significantly enhances gaseous inorganic iodine abundance (∼40%), increases halogen atom production rates (∼40% in I, >100% in Br, and ∼60% in Cl), and reduces oxidant levels (-7% in O₃, -2% in OH, and -4% in HO₂) compared to the simulation without the process. We appeal for further direct measurements of iodine species, laboratory experiments on the controlling factors, and multiscale simulations of iodine heterogeneous recycling.

Chemical Interactions Between Ship-Originated Air Pollutants and Ocean-Emitted Halogens

Ocean-going ships supply products from one region to another and contribute to the world's economy. Ship exhaust contains many air pollutants and results in significant changes in marine atmospheric composition. The role of reactive halogen species (RHS) in the troposphere has received increasing recognition and oceans are the largest contributors to their atmospheric burden. However, the impact of shipping emissions on RHS and that of RHS on ship-originated air pollutants have not been studied in detail. Here, an updated Weather Research Forecasting coupled with Chemistry model is utilized to explore the chemical interactions between ship emissions and oceanic RHS over the East Asia seas in summer. The emissions and resulting chemical transformations from shipping activities increase the level of NO and NO2 at the surface, increase O3 in the South China Sea, but decrease O3 in the East China Sea. Such changes in pollutants result in remarkable changes in the levels of RHS (>200% increase of chlorine; ∼30% and ∼5% decrease of bromine and iodine, respectively) as well as in their partitioning. The abundant RHS, in turn, reshape the loadings of air pollutants (∼20% decrease of NO and NO2; ∼15% decrease of O3) and those of the oxidants (>10% reduction of OH and HO2; ∼40% decrease of NO3) with marked patterns along the ship tracks. We, therefore, suggest that these important chemical interactions of ship-originated emissions with RHS should be considered in the environmental policy assessments of the role of shipping emissions in air quality and climate.

Effect of bromine and iodine chemistry on tropospheric ozone over Asia-Pacific using the CMAQ model

Recent studies have focused on the chemistry of tropospheric halogen species which are able to deplete tropospheric ozone (O₃). In this study, the effect of bromine and iodine chemistry on tropospheric O₃ within the annual cycle in Asia-Pacific is investigated using the CMAQ model with the newly embedded bromine and iodine chemistry and a blended and customized emission inventory considering marine halogen emission. Results indicate that the vertical profiles of bromine and iodine species show distinct features over land/ocean and daytime/nighttime, related to natural and anthropogenic emission distributions and photochemical reactions. The halogen-mediated O₃ loss has a strong seasonal cycle, and reaches a maximum of -15.9 ppbv (-44.3%) over the ocean and -13.4 ppbv (-38.9%) over continental Asia among the four seasons. Changes in solar radiation, dominant wind direction, and nearshore chlorophyll-a accumulation all contribute to these seasonal differences. Based on the distances to the nearest coastline, the onshore and offshore features of tropospheric O₃ loss caused by bromine and iodine chemistry are studied. Across a coastline-centric 400-km-wide belt from onshore to offshore, averaged maximum gradient of O₃ loss reaches 1.1 ppbv/100 km at surface level, while planetary boundary layer (PBL) column mean of O₃ loss is more moderate, being approximately 0.7 ppbv/100 km. Relative high halogen can be found over Tibetan Plateau (TP) and the largest O₃ loss (approximately 4-5 ppbv) in the PBL can be found between the western boundary of the domain and the TP. Halogens originating from marine sources can potentially affect O₃ concentration transported from the stratosphere over the TP region. As part of efforts to improve our understanding of the effect of bromine and iodine chemistry on tropospheric O₃, we call for more models and monitoring studies on halogen chemistry and be considered further in air pollution prevention and control policy.

Potential Effect of Halogens on Atmospheric Oxidation and Air Quality in China

Air pollution has been a hazard in China over recent decades threatening the health of half a billion people. Much effort has been devoted to mitigating air pollution in China leading to a significant reduction in primary pollutants emissions from 2013 to 2017, while a continuously worsening trend of surface ozone (O₃, a secondary pollutant and greenhouse gas) was observed over the same period. Atmospheric oxidation, dominated by daytime reactions involving hydroxyl radicals (OH), is the critical process to convert freshly-emitted compounds into secondary pollutants, and is underestimated in current models of China's air pollution. Halogens (chlorine, bromine, and iodine) are known to profoundly influence oxidation chemistry in the marine environment; however, their impact on atmospheric oxidation and air pollution in China is unknown. In the present study, we report for the first time that halogens substantially enhance the total atmospheric oxidation capacity in polluted areas of China, typically 10% to 20% (up to 87% in winter) and mainly by significantly increasing OH level. The enhanced oxidation along the coast is driven by oceanic emissions of bromine and iodine, and that over the inland areas by anthropogenic emission of chlorine. The extent and seasonality of halogen impact are largely explained by the dynamics of Asian monsoon, location and intensity of halogen emissions, and O₃ formation regime. The omission of halogen emissions and chemistry may lead to significant errors in historical re-assessments and future projections of the evolution of atmospheric oxidation in polluted regions.
