An Approach to Chemorheology of a Filled SBR Compound

Phosphonium Ionic Liquid-Activated Sulfur Vulcanization: A Way Forward to Reduce Zinc Oxide Levels in Industrial Rubber Formulations

Extensive use of zinc oxide and accelerators such as diphenyl guanidine (DPG) in the vulcanization of rubber composites entail potential environmental risks. These are pervasive contaminants of roadway runoff originating from tire wear particles (TWPs). Herein, the effect of phosphonium ionic liquids (PILs) in styrene-butadiene rubber compounds was demonstrated with reduced ZnO loading and no DPG to minimize the environmental footprint of the vulcanization process. The structure and chemistry of PILs were found to be the influencing parameters impelling the cross-linking kinetics, enabling shorter induction times. The generation of active Zn²⁺ sites by PILs was examined through FTIR spectroscopy, calorimetry, and molecular dynamics simulations. From a tire application perspective, the PILs not only enhanced the cure kinetics but also improved the dynamic-mechanical behavior of the rubber composites. Consequently, the harm caused by TWPs to the atmosphere, fuel intake, and CO₂ emissions was minimal, thereby confirming the potential use of PILs in the tire industry.

Constitutive Modeling of Nonlinear Rheological Behavior of Carbon Nanotube-Filled Polypropylene Nanocomposites

The rheological behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-filled polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites with different filler loadings was experimentally studied and simulated using constitutive modeling. Rheological behavior was characterized in small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) flow, large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) flow, startup of shear flow, steady shear flow, and stress relaxation after the imposition of a step shear strain. Virgin PP and PP with CNT loadings of 1, 3, and 5 wt% were used. The formation of a rheological percolation network was observed at these loadings. The Leonov and Simhambhatla-Leonov models were used to simulate the rheological behavior. In the linear region, the simulations provided good predictions of the experimental data for both the unfilled and filled PP. In the nonlinear region, the simulations also provided good results for the virgin PP and satisfactory results for the PP/1 wt%CNT nanocomposite under most flow conditions. However, for the other two nanocomposites the model showed mixed results.

Catalytic and networking effects of carbon black on the kinetics and conversion of sulfur vulcanization in styrene butadiene rubber

The present work discusses the effects of carbon-black (CB) on the kinetics and conversion of sulfur vulcanization in styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds. Kinetic studies revealed that the onset of the vulcanization reaction shortens monotonically by incorporation of CB, but the rate of vulcanization goes through a maximum at a critical loading of CB. It was demonstrated that CB has two roles in the kinetics of vulcanization: a catalytic effect on accelerating the initial reactions among vulcanization agents and a networking effect on retarding the crosslinking of macro-radicals. It was shown that the latter effect dominates the former one at high concentrations of CB where the rubber-mediated network of CB is formed and a large portion of rubber is immobilized as bound rubber. By using two types of CBs with very different specific surface areas, it was discussed that the critical loading at which the retarding effect begins coincides with the rheological percolation threshold of CBs. Moreover, conversion of vulcanization under isothermal conditions was continuously reduced as the concentration of CBs increased. This was correlated to the magnitude of the physical restrictions exerted by CBs, depending on the specific surface area of each CB. However, it was also shown that this restriction could be alleviated at higher temperatures during non-isothermal vulcanization, which enhances the degree of conversion in crosslinking.
