Abstract
Antimicrobials are sometimes inappropriately administered in dog breeding facilities in an attempt to improve fertility or reduce neonatal losses, but these practices lead to an increased prevalence of resistant bacteria. The aim of this study was to assess antibiotic use intensity in breeding kennels by comparing the resistance profiles of Escherichia coli and coagulase positive Staphylococci isolated from breeding bitches and from household animals. A rectal and a perivulvar swab were collected from 80 healthy bitches, half of which were housed in breeding kennels and the other half in domestic environments. The resistance of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and S.aureus to a range of antimicrobials was evaluated through the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration test. Antibiotic resistance rates, the percentage of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL)-producing E.coli strains, the percentage of mecA positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococci and of Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) isolates were compared between breeding bitches and privately owned ones using Fisher's exact test. The percentage of resistance to the antimicrobials tested was generally higher in dogs from breeding kennels than in owned animals, with statistically significant differences in E.coli for cefazolin (p < 0.0001), third-generation cephalosporins (p = 0.0015), tetracycline (p = 0.0079), kanamycin (p = 0.0291) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (p = 0.0007). Furthermore, the prevalence of ESBL E.coli was significantly higher in breeding dogs (p = 0.0002). 38.5 % of breeding bitches and 12.5 % of household dogs carried methicillin-resistant mecA positive S.pseudintermedius strains. S.aureus was only isolated from household animals, and one of the three isolates was mecA positive and MDR. Our data indicate a higher exposure of kennel dogs to antimicrobials. The pattern of antibiotic resistance, particularly to aminopenicillins but also to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, suggests a large use of these agents. The results confirm that healthy dogs can harbour commensal bacteria that have acquired antimicrobial resistances, which may be exchanged between hosts; the potential role of the two dog typologies as reservoirs for resistance genes was demonstrated. The risk of household dogs being exposed to resistant bacteria, probably of human origin, was also observed. Our study reveals a generally high exposure of dogs to antimicrobials and highlights the need to sensitise veterinarians and breeders to better antibiotic stewardship.

Abstract
Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is one species in the commensal staphylococcal population in dogs. While it is commonly carried on healthy companion dogs it is also an opportunistic pathogen associated with a range of skin, ear, wound and other infections. While adapted to dogs, it is not restricted to them, and we have reviewed its host range, including increasing reports of human colonisation and infections. Despite its association with pet dogs, S. pseudintermedius is found widely in animals, covering companion, livestock and free-living species of birds and mammals. Human infections, typically in immunocompromised individuals, are increasingly being recognised, in part due to improved diagnosis. Colonisation, infection, and antimicrobial resistance, including frequent multidrug resistance, among S. pseudintermedius isolates represent important One Health challenges.

Abstract
Staphylococcus intermedius is known to cause a wide variety of infectious processes in animals and is well described in the veterinary literature. Here, we present a case of a S. intermedius prosthetic joint infection potentially resulting from exposure to a pet dog.

Abstract
Dogs play important roles in our society, thus the concern for their health becomes imperative. Staphylococcus spp. are commensal bacterium frequently isolated from canine skin and recognized as zoonotic agents. These bacteria have been becoming increasingly resistant to antimicrobials used to treat infections and to produce biofilm, which further increases their virulence capability and resistance. In this context, sponges-associated bacteria are known as prolific sources of substances with antimicrobial activities, representing a potential to integrate the arsenal of drugs for clinical use. In this study, 121 strains of Staphylococcus isolated from healthy or infected dogs were characterized according to their resistance to antimicrobials, as well as to their biofilm production ability. From the total of strains, 82 were resistant to at least one antimicrobial and 40 were multidrug-resistant (MDR). Furthermore, 117 out of 121 were capable to produce biofilm, and within those 36 were classified as strong biofilm producers. A set of fifteen bacterial strains previously isolated from marine sponges were also evaluated for antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities. Among the marine bacteria with antimicrobial activity, eight inhibited the growth of more than 50% of the MDR Staphylococcus. In addition, the cell-free supernatant obtained from five sponge-associated bacteria cultures was able to disaggregate more than 50% of the mature biofilm staphylococcal cells. The organic extracts (256 μg/mL) from two potential strains, Pseudomonas fluorescens H40 and H41, dissociated the biofilm of a strain classified as MDR and strong biofilm producer in 88.5% and 91.3%, respectively. These marine Pseudomonas strains also exhibited a strong activity of antimicrobial and antibiofilm substances. The results suggest that the sponge-associated bacteria analyzed could be potential sources of antimicrobial and antibiofilm substances against MDR and biofilm producers Staphylococcus isolated from canine skin.

Abstract
The intracellular lifestyle of bacteria is widely acknowledged to be an important mechanism in chronic and recurring infection. Among the Staphylococcus genus, only Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius have been clearly identified as intracellular in nonprofessional phagocytic cells (NPPCs), for which the mechanism is mainly fibronectin-binding dependent. Here, we used bioinformatics tools to search for possible new fibronectin-binding proteins (FnBP-like) in other Staphylococcus species. We found a protein in Staphylococcus delphini called Staphylococcus delphini surface protein Y (SdsY). This protein shares 68% identity with the Staphylococcus pseudintermedius surface protein D (SpsD), 36% identity with S. aureus FnBPA, and 39% identity with S. aureus FnBPB. The SdsY protein possesses the typical structure of FnBP-like proteins, including an N-terminal signal sequence, an A domain, a characteristic repeated pattern, and an LPXTG cell wall anchor motif. The level of adhesion to immobilized fibronectin was significantly higher in all S. delphini strains tested than in the fibronectin-binding-deficient S. aureus DU5883 strain. By using a model of human osteoblast infection, the level of internalization of all strains tested was significantly higher than with the invasive-incompetent S. aureus DU5883. These findings were confirmed by phenotype restoration after transformation of DU5883 by a plasmid expression vector encoding the SdsY repeats. Additionally, using fibronectin-depleted serum and murine osteoblast cell lines deficient for the β1 integrin, the involvement of fibronectin and β1 integrin was demonstrated in S. delphini internalization. The present study demonstrates that additional staphylococcal species are able to invade NPPCs and proposes a method to identify FnBP-like proteins.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate spatial patterns of staphylococcal infections and resistance patterns of clinical isolates among dogs from Gauteng province in South Africa. Data from records of 1497 dog clinical samples submitted to a veterinary teaching hospital between 2007 and 2012 were used in the study. Spatial empirical Bayesian smoothed risk maps were used to investigate spatial patterns of staphylococcal infections, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and multidrug resistance (MDR). Moran's I and spatial scan statistics were used to investigate spatial clusters at municipal and town spatial scales. Significant clusters of staphylococcal infections were identified at both the municipal (Relative Risk [RR] = 1.71, p = 0.003) and town (RR = 1.65, p = 0.039) scales. However, significant clusters of AMR (p = 0.003) and MDR (p = 0.007) were observed only at the town scale. Future larger studies will need to investigate local determinants of geographical distribution of the clusters so as to guide targeted control efforts.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Malassezia pachydermatis often cause skin diseases in dogs. MATERIAL AND METHODS An online survey was e-mailed to veterinary practices nationwide covering demographics, diagnosis methods, and oral and topical treatment options. Of the 740 surveys sent, 100 complete replies were obtained. RESULTS The majority of clinicians were unaware of the existence of the International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases guidelines or did not follow them (53%). Oral antibiotics were used universally for superficial bacterial folliculitis treatment, particularly amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (100%), cephalexin (94%), enrofloxacin (67%), or marbofloxacin (60%). For fold dermatitis (FD) and otitis externa (OE), oral antibiotics were also given as treatment in 88% and 82% of cases, respectively. Oral antifungals were often prescribed for generalised Malassezia dermatitis (85%), FD (70%), and OE (59%). S. pseudintermedius and M. pachydermatis were frequently treated topically, particularly with antibacterials or antifungals only, or a combination of antibacterials, antifungals, and glucocorticoids. Alternative options such as honey-based products were not frequently used. CONCLUSION Our survey suggests that oral antibiotics are overused by Portuguese clinicians despite the spread of antibiotic resistant S. pseudintermedius. Oral antibiotics and antifungals are commonly prescribed for skin conditions manageable with topical treatments.

Abstract
Background Antimicrobial resistance is becoming increasingly important in both human and veterinary medicine. This study investigated the proportion of antimicrobial resistant samples and resistance patterns of Staphylococcus isolates from cats presented at a veterinary teaching hospital in South Africa. Records of 216 samples from cats that were submitted to the bacteriology laboratory of the University of Pretoria academic veterinary hospital between 2007 and 2012 were evaluated. Isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing against a panel of 15 drugs using the disc diffusion method. Chi square and Fisher’s exact tests were used to assess simple associations between antimicrobial resistance and age group, sex, breed and specimen type. Additionally, associations between Staphylococcus infection and age group, breed, sex and specimen type were assessed using logistic regression. Results Staphylococcus spp. isolates were identified in 17.6% (38/216) of the samples submitted and 4.6% (10/216) of these were unspeciated. The majority (61.1%,11/18) of the isolates were from skin samples, followed by otitis media (34.5%, 10/29). Coagulase Positive Staphylococcus (CoPS) comprised 11.1% (24/216) of the samples of which 7.9% (17/216) were S. intermedius group and 3.2% (7/216) were S. aureus. Among the Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) (1.9%, 4/216), S. felis and S. simulans each constituted 0.9% (2/216). There was a significant association between Staphylococcus spp. infection and specimen type with odds of infection being higher for ear canal and skin compared to urine specimens. There were higher proportions of samples resistant to clindamycin 34.2% (13/25), ampicillin 32.4% (2/26), lincospectin 31.6% (12/26) and penicillin-G 29.0% (11/27). Sixty three percent (24/38) of Staphylococcus spp. were resistant to one antimicrobial agent and 15.8% were multidrug resistant (MDR). MDR was more common among S. aureus 28.6% (2/7) than S. intermedius group isolates 11.8% (2/17). One S. intermedius group isolate was resistant to all β-lactam antimicrobial agents tested. Conclusion S. intermedius group was the most common cause of skin infections and antimicrobial resistance was not wide spread among cats presented at the veterinary academic hospital in South Africa. However, the presence of MDR-Staphylococcus spp. and isolates resistant to all β-lactams is of both public health and animal health concern.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance is a growing global health issue. It is also a recognised problem in veterinary medicine. Between September and December 2015 the authors administered a cross-sectional survey to licensed veterinarians in Washington State to assess factors affecting antimicrobial prescribing practices among veterinarians in Washington State. Two hundred and three veterinarians completed the survey. The majority of respondents (166, 82 per cent) were engaged in small animal or exotic animal practice. 24 per cent of respondents reported not ordering culture and sensitivity (C/S) testing in practice. Of the 76 per cent of veterinarians who reported ordering C/S tests, 36 per cent reported ordering such testing 'often' or 'always' when treating presumptive bacterial infections. Most respondents (65 per cent) mentioned cost as the most common barrier to ordering a C/S test. Only 16 (10 per cent) respondents reported having access to or utilising a clinic-specific antibiogram. This survey demonstrated that while antimicrobials are commonly used in veterinary practice, and veterinarians are concerned about antimicrobial resistance, cost is a barrier to obtaining C/S tests to guide antimicrobial therapy. Summaries of antimicrobial resistance patterns are rarely available to the practising veterinarian. Efforts to promote antimicrobial stewardship in a 'One Health' manner should address barriers to the judicious use of antimicrobials in the veterinary practice setting.
