Abstract
Background This study aimed to systematically and comprehensively review the effect of various treatment variables on apically extruded debris (AED) during non-surgical root canal retreatment (NSRCRT). Methods The study protocol is shared in the Open Science Framework database (https://osf.io/kjtdg/?view_only=17060180705745ec9dae9a01614f3880). An electronic search was conducted up to July 2022 to reveal related studies. Two reviewers critically assessed the studies for eligibility against inclusion and exclusion criteria and data extraction. Quantitative data synthesis was performed, and the risk of bias in the studies was also evaluated. Results Forty-six studies were included in the systematic review and 14 in the meta-analysis. Conflicting or limited evidence was found for the effect of sealer type, obturation technique, and solvent use. The manual instrumentation increased the amount of AED compared to rotary instrumentation during the removal of filling materials (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in the amount of AED between the use of rotary and reciprocating files during the removal of filling materials (P=0.181). Conclusion Rotary instruments can be recommended instead of manual instruments during the removal of filling materials to control the amount of AED. Further studies with a low risk of bias are needed to clarify the effect of other treatment variables on AED during NSRCRT.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to perform an integrative review to identify the most effective supplementary protocols used after filling material (FM) removal and root canal reinstrumentation, during endodontic reintervention. The literature search was performed on the electronic databases PubMed and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), using a combination of specific scientific descriptors. Selection criteria accepted articles published in English, Spanish and Portuguese languages, up to August 2021, involving in vitro and ex vivo studies. After applying the eligibility criteria, 46 articles were included for qualitative analysis. The tool for qualitative analysis of quasi-experimental studies of the Joanna Briggs Institute was used to determine the risk of bias of the included articles. The selected articles provided important data regarding the following supplementary protocols: sonic and ultrasonic activation of the irrigating solution; the use of ultrasonic inserts, XP-endo system instruments, and photon-induced photoacoustic streaming for mechanical debridement; and new devices as GentleWave system, and the self-adjusting file. Overall, all supplementary protocols demonstrated efficacy in removing the remaining FM. The implementation of various supplementary protocols can effectively remove the remaining FM from the root canal walls, although complete removal is not always achieved. However, it was not possible to determine the most effective protocol. Conversely, their association can enhance remaining FM removal. Remaining FM attached to root canal walls hinders proper chemical-mechanical preparation during endodontic reintervention. Supplementary protocols optimize the remaining FM removal, enhancing cleaning and disinfection of root canal.

Fabrication of a Potential Electrodeposited Nanocomposite for Dental Applications. INORGANICS 2022. Abstract
In the present study, a nanocrystalline Ni-Fe matrix with reinforced TiO2 nanoparticles as a functional nanocomposite material was fabricated by pulsed current electroforming in UV-LIGA (lithography, electroplating, and molding). The influences of TiO2 nanoparticles on the Ni-Fe nanocomposite deposition were also investigated using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and in vitro cytotoxicity assay. It was found that the Ni-Fe nanocomposite with 5 wt.% TiO2 nanoparticles showed a smooth surface and better dispersion property. When the Ni-Fe nanocomposite is combined with 20 wt.% TiO2, it resulted in congeries of TiO2 nanoparticles. In addition, TiO2 nanoparticles possessed better dispersion properties as performed in pulse current electrodeposition. The microstructure of the electrodeposited Ni-Fe-TiO2 nanocomposite was a FeNi3 phase containing anatase nano-TiO2. Moreover, the electrodeposited Ni-Fe-5 wt.% TiO2 nanocomposite exhibited a smooth surface and structural integrity. Cytotoxicity assay results also proved that the Ni-Fe nanocomposite with different concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles had good biocompatibility. Therefore, the optimization of pulse current electroforming parameters was successfully applied to fabricate the Ni-Fe-TiO2 nanocomposite, and thus could be used as an endodontic file material for dental applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To assess the financial impact of incorporating a new (reciprocal) technology into endodontic treatments in the public health system (SUS). METHODS This was a economic evaluation study (comparing the 3 different endodontic instrumentation techniques-manual, rotary and reciprocating), allocative efficiency analysis to optimize existing resources in the SUS, and financial contribution impact analysis of incorporation of a new technology. Thirty-one (31) 12 years-old volunteers were evaluated. RESULTS The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was calculated at R$1.34/min, - R$0.60/min and BRL 0.10/min for the single-rooted, bi-rooted and tri-rooted teeth, respectively, when the rotary technique was compared with the manual type. In turn, the ICER was R$ 21.04/min, - R$ 0.73/min and - R$ 2.81/min for the 3 types of teeth, respectively, when the reciprocating technique was compared with the manual type. The incremental financial impact of replacing manual endodontic with rotary endodontic treatments would be - R$ 2060963.66 in the case of single-rooted teeth, but the number of treatments would also be reduced (- 19,379). In the case of two-rooted teeth, the incremental financial impact would be BRL 34921540.62 with the possibility of performing an additional 204,110 treatments. In turn, BRL 11523561.50 represented the incremental financial impact for teeth with 3 or more roots and with an increase of 72,545 procedures. When we analyzed the incremental financial impact of replacing manual endodontic with reciprocating endodontic treatments, it would be - R$ 730227.80 in the case of single-rooted teeth, allowing for an additional 2538 treatments. In turn, R$ 21674853.00 represented the incremental financial impact for bi-radicular teeth, with an increase of 121,700 procedures. In the case of two-rooted teeth, the incremental financial impact would be BRL 13591742.90 with the possibility of performing an additional 40,670 treatments. CONCLUSIONS The reciprocating technique could improve access to endodontic treatment in the SUS as it allowed a simultaneous reduction in clinical time and associated costs. However, the higher number of endodontic treatments performed would have a financial impact.

Abstract
AIM To assess the influence of remnants of filling material on hydroxyl ion diffusion from calcium hydroxide (CH) paste, measured by the pH value, in retreated teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 120 single-rooted extracted teeth were prepared up to a size 35 hand file and filled. For retreatment, the specimens were divided into four groups (n = 20): ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PUR), PUR with additional instrumentation (PURA), Mtwo Retreatment (MTWR), and MTWR with additional instrumentation (MTWRA). Negative (NEG) and positive (POS) control groups were composed by 20 specimens each one. The specimens, except NEG, were filled with CH paste. The retreated groups were scanned using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for analysis of filling remnants. The pH assessment was performed at the baseline, after seven, 21, 45, and 60 days of immersion in saline. Data were analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk and Levene's test, followed by a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test. RESULTS Additional instrumentation (PURA and MTWRA) were superior regarding removal of the filling material (p <0.05); however, without significant difference (p >0.05). The mean pH value in all groups increased (p <0.05). After 60 days, no statistical difference was observed among POS and PURA; and MTWR and MTWRA. There was less diffusion of hydroxyl ions when the amount of remnants was greater than 59%. CONCLUSION Additional instrumentation improved the ability to remove filling material in both systems. All groups presented increasing pH; however, the higher the amount of remnants, the lower the diffusion of hydroxyl ions. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The amount of remnants allows less diffusion of calcium hydroxyl ions. Thus, additional instrumentation improves the ability to remove these materials.

Abstract
Despite enjoying high favourable outcome rates, root canal treatment is not always successful. Root canal retreatment is a widely practised option for managing a non-healing root treated tooth. A basic distinction between retreatment and initial treatment is the requirement to remove the existing root filling material occupying the root canal space. Only then, can the technical deficiencies and possible causes of failure be addressed. Hence, the successful removal of the root filling material is critical to achieving the objectives of retreatment. Many different materials and techniques have been used for root canal filling, which have been documented in a plethora of studies; these are mainly laboratory studies investigating the removal of root filling materials. To help guide future research, which may then better inform clinical practice in relation to retreatment procedures, the focus of this narrative review is on the research methods and experimental models employed to study the removal of root filling materials. The current available literature demonstrates great variation in the research methodologies used to study the removal of root filling material, including direct visualization by splitting tooth samples or clearing, three-dimensional radiographic imaging including using microcomputed tomography or cone-beam computed tomography, and a combination of these techniques. Depending on the research method employed, variation also exists in quantification of root filling material removal; these include measurements of surface area, volume or weight, and criteria-based (semi-quantitative) assessment. Experimental models, using human teeth or resin models, differ with respect to standardization techniques and replication of the clinical scenario including initial sample preparation, canal filling, allocation and technical aspects of retreatment procedures. Future models should replicate, as closely as possible, the clinical scenario. Currently, microcomputed tomography provides a highly detailed, non-invasive and non-destructive method of objectively assessing and quantifying root filling removal.

Abstract
The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an XP-endo non-surgical root canal re-treatment system in removing both GuttaCore and Thermafil gutta-percha carrier-based root canal filling materials from straight root canal systems using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. The study was performed on 20 single-rooted upper teeth, which were randomly allocated into the following study groups: Group A, Thermafil and AH Plus sealer (n = 10); Group B, GuttaCore and AH Plus sealer (n = 10). Before and after the non-surgical root canal re-treatment procedure, the samples were submitted for a micro-CT analysis. The volume of the root canal filling material (mm3), the volume of the remaining root canal filling material (mm3) and the time (minutes) needed to remove the root canal filling material were also recorded. Student's t-test was used to analyze the results. No statistically significant differences were found between the volume of the remaining root canal filling material in the GuttaCore and Thermafil root canal filling systems at the coronal third (p = 0.782), middle third (p = 0.838) or apical third (p = 0.882) of the straight root canal systems; however, the GuttaCore required a statistically significant (p = 0.037) shorter amount of time (4.72 ± 0.76 min) to be removed than the Thermafil carrier-based root canal filling material (5.92 ± 1.42 min). The XP-endo Finisher non-surgical endodontic re-treatment system removes both GuttaCore and Thermafil gutta-percha carrier-based root canal filling materials from straight root canal systems, although removal of the GuttaCore gutta-percha carrier-based root canal filling material required less time.

Abstract
Introduction Flat-oval root canals of incisors can be problematic in retreatments. This study assessed the efficacy of continuous and reciprocating rotation instruments in retreatment of flat-oval root canals in lower incisors via micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). File systems studied were ProTaper universal retreatment rotary system associated with ProTaper Next (PTUR+PTN), D-RaCe associated with iRaCe (DR+iR), Reciproc (REC), and WaveOne (WO). Materials and Methods Thirty-two mandibular incisors with flat root canal were divided into 4 groups (n=8). The groups were initially prepared with PTN, iRaCe, REC, and WO, then instrumented, filled, and subjected to micro-CT analyses. All the canals were then retreated with the PTUR+PTN, DR+iR, REC, and WO, and then subjected to new micro-CT analysis which allowed quantification of residual filling material volume and change in the diameter of the root canal apical third. Endodontic retreatment time was also quantified. Data were analyzed with One-Way ANOVA and post hoc t tests. Results None of the systems completely removed the filling material. The groups differed in terms of remnant filling material volume (PTUR+PTN=2.9±1.1 mm3; DR+iR=3.6±3.1 mm3; REC=4.9±1.9 mm3; WO=3.1±1.9 mm3) and retreatment time (PTUR+PTN=1:36±0:12 sec; DR+iR=0:57±0:13 sec; REC=2:10±0:44 sec; WO=2:03±0:31 sec), but had similar values in terms of change in apical root canal diameter (P>0.05). Conclusions Based on this in vitro study, the type of endodontic instrument did not affect the diameter of the root canal apical third. However, PTUR with ProTaper Next had the lowest residual filling material volume and second lowest retreatment time, in flat-oval root canals in mandibular incisors.
