Experiences of first-year nursing students during an education redesign: findings from the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education

Students' perceptions of belonging in the School of Nursing at a regional university in Australia

BACKGROUND

Attrition in pre-registration nursing degrees is a global issue. Students' perceptions of belonging is a factor that influences attrition.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to evaluate students' perception of belonging to a School of Nursing, as well as their intention to complete the pre-registration Bachelor of Nursing (BN) program following implementation of the Initiatives for Retention (IR) intervention.

DESIGN

A prospective cross-sectional survey of student nurses was undertaken using an online questionnaire.

SETTING

A large regional university in Australia.

PARTICIPANTS

Pre-registration nursing students.

METHODS

Perceptions of Belonging were evaluated using the 24-item Belonging questionnaire comprising three subscales. Data were analysed using SPSS version 25. Pearson's correlation, Student's t-tests and one way ANOVA were used to assess associations and differences in belonging scores and student demographics, study status and participation in the Initiatives for Retention (IR) intervention.

RESULTS

A total of 201 students responded to the voluntary questionnaire. The mean score for overall Belonging was 70.5 (maximum obtainable 96), mean Scores for University affiliation, University support and acceptance, and staff relations with students were 34.7, 24.1 and 11.8 respectively. Female students, those who were studying at the university for less than a year and those who participated in the IR intervention activities reported significantly higher University Belonging scores compared to their contemporaries. Logistic regression revealed that students studying the BN course for more than 3 years (OR: 0.43 95% CI 0.20-0.93, p = 0.031), and those employed (OR: 0.435, 95% CI 0.16-0.16, p = 0.022) were significant predictors of not attending the IR sessions. There were no significant differences in overall University Belonging scores based on other demographic characteristics and, study status. The majority of the students (84%) stated that they plan to continue and complete the BN program.

CONCLUSIONS

Measures designed to develop student involvement may positively contribute a successful relationship between the institution and the student, increasing the students' sense of belonging and decreasing attrition among student nurses.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Initiatives for Retention (IR) facilitate a greater sense of belonging in nursing students hence Schools of Nursing should consider embedding such strategies.

Longitudinal Analysis of Postlicensure Student Competency Perceptions

BACKGROUND

A longitudinal evaluation of the final year of the Oregon Consortium of Nursing Education (OCNE) curriculum was undertaken to explore students' perception of competency and benchmark proficiency.

METHOD

A retrospective, longitudinal mixed-methods study of postlicensure students was tracked from the initial Transition course to the final Capstone course to evaluate levels of attainment. Researchers used previously developed language categories of attainment for each benchmark to determine perceived competence.

RESULTS

Researcher analysis tested the narrative language of attainment levels using prior developed themes. Researchers coded student attainment levels in the Capstone course compared with the initial Transition course, with higher confidence for Competencies for Relationship-Centered Care and Clinical Judgment and lower confidence for Leadership and Population Care Competencies.

CONCLUSION

This analysis provided a deeper understanding of RN-to-baccalaureate student confidence toward attaining 10 OCNE competencies, supporting the continued development of a curriculum to address areas of low perceived competence. Student Competency Perceptions From Associate Degree to Bachelor Degree Completion

BACKGROUND

A curriculum evaluation gap was addressed by exploring the final year of the Oregon Consortium of Nursing Education (OCNE) curriculum through student perception of competency and benchmark proficiency.

METHOD

Researchers used a mixed-methods design to explore RN to baccalaureate (RNBS) student self-assessment data on perceived benchmark proficiency. Students' written statements were coded into four attainment categories, ranging from not attained to strong.

RESULTS

Researchers categorized strong attainment in the competencies of intentional learning, relationship-centered care, and clinical judgment, with moderate attainment in ethics, communication, health care team collaboration, and reflection on self-care. Competencies related to leadership, practicing within a broader health care system, and application of evidence in practice had limited attainment.

CONCLUSION

The results support using attainment categories in the measurement of student self-reported competency. The findings could be used to support course and curriculum evaluation, student advising, and coaching, as well as to improve professional development opportunities for students moving through the curriculum. Professional Values Competency Evaluation for Students Enrolled in a Concept-Based Curriculum

BACKGROUND

Although many nursing programs have transitioned toward the use of concept-based curricula, the evaluation of student learning associated with the curricular approach has been limited. An evaluation of student learning related to professional values for programs offering concept-based curricula was not evident in the literature. The purpose was to determine how a course competency related to professional values was addressed by nursing students studying in a concept-based nursing curriculum.

METHOD

The qualitative methodology of framework analysis was used to evaluate written assignments (N = 75).

RESULTS

The core concept appreciation for professional values and the core concept disillusionment with unprofessional behaviors were identified in students' written reflections.

CONCLUSION

The core concept of appreciation for professional values contributes to an evidence base of contemporary professional values identified in nursing. The core concept of disillusionment with unprofessional behaviors can inform curricular planning and research on how to advocate for professional behaviors. [J Nurs Educ. 2017;56(1):12-21.].

The context, influences and challenges for undergraduate nurse clinical education: Continuing the dialogue

INTRODUCTION

Approaches to clinical education are highly diverse and becoming increasingly complex to sustain in complex milieu

OBJECTIVE

To identify the influences and challenges of providing nurse clinical education in the undergraduate setting and to illustrate emerging solutions.

METHOD

A discursive exploration into the broad and varied body of evidence including peer reviewed and grey literature.

DISCUSSION

Internationally, enabling undergraduate clinical learning opportunities faces a range of challenges. These can be illustrated under two broad themes: (1) legacies from the past and the inherent features of nurse education and (2) challenges of the present, including, population changes, workforce changes, and the disconnection between the health and education sectors. Responses to these challenges are triggering the emergence of novel approaches, such as collaborative models.

CONCLUSION(S)

Ongoing challenges in providing accessible, effective and quality clinical learning experiences are apparent.
