Using the PRECEDE model in understanding determinants of quality of life among Iranian male addicts

Factors Predicting COVID-19 Vaccination Uptake Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in China: An Observational Prospective Cohort Study

Background

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has disproportionately affected sexual minorities including men who have sex with men (MSM). This study investigated factors associated with the uptake of COVID-19 vaccination among MSM in China.

Methods

Inclusion criteria were: (1) born biologically male, (2) had oral or anal sex with men in the past year, (3) aged at least 18 years, and (4) lived in Shenzhen, China. Prospective participants were recruited through outreach in gay bars and saunas, online recruitment, and peer referrals. Participants completed a baseline online survey between August and September 2020 and a follow-up online survey between April and May 2021. Logistic regression models were fitted for data analysis.

Results

Among 420 participants who completed the baseline survey, 303 completed the follow-up survey. Among participants being followed up, 113 (37%) received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccination during the study period. After adjusting for significant sociodemographic characteristics, five baseline predisposing factors predicted COVID-19 vaccination uptake during the follow-up period, including asking whether their partners had COVID-19 symptoms [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.00-1.38], washing hands before and after sex (AOR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.03-1.46), sanitizing before and after sex (AOR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.00-1.37), perceived higher risk of COVID-19 transmission through sexual behaviors (AOR: 1.28, 95% CI: 1.04-1.58), and panic about COVID-19 (AOR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.16-1.89). Regarding enabling factors, receiving testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI) (AOR: 2.19, 95% CI: 1.25-3.85) and other prevention measures for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/STI (AOR: 2.61, 95% CI: 1.56-4.37) 6 months prior to the baseline survey were associated with higher uptake of COVID-19 vaccination.

Conclusion

MSM's uptake rate of COVID-19 vaccination was comparable to that of the general population in Shenzhen, China. This study offered an overview for us to identify tapping points that can encourage COVID-19 vaccination uptake among Chinese MSM.

The Effect of Educational Intervention Based on PRECEDE Model on Health Promotion Behaviors, Hope Enhancement, and Mental Health in Cancer Patients

In this experimental study, 200 cancer patients (100 subject in experimental group and 100 subjects in control group) referred to Amir Oncology Hospital in Shiraz were investigated. Educational intervention for experimental group consisted of 12 educational sessions for 50 to 55 minutes. A questionnaire including demographic information, PRECEDE constructs (knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, enabling factors, and social support), was used to measure health promotion behaviors, patients' hope, and mental health before and 6 months after intervention. Six months after intervention, experimental group showed significant increase in knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, enabling factors, social supports, health promotion behaviors, patients' hope, and mental health compared to the control group. This study showed the effectiveness of intervention based on PRECEDE constructs in mentioned factors 6 months after intervention. Hence, this model can act as a framework for designing and implementing educational intervention for health promotion behaviors of cancer patients.

Rural adults' perceived role of family members in prescription opioid misuse prevention: Implications for family-based approaches

PURPOSE

This study explored and documented rural adults' perceptions of family roles in prescription opioid misuse prevention and the predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling factors that influence family members from taking those roles.

METHODS

Nine focus groups with rural adults (n = 55) were conducted to evoke discussion about family roles in prescription opioid misuse prevention. Transcripts were coded based on common ideas that arose during the focus groups, previous literature, and the PRECEDE-PROCEED program planning model.

FINDINGS

Findings suggest that rural adults perceive the opioid epidemic as partially a family problem. Additionally, rural adults perceive themselves as having a critical role in preventing prescription opioid misuse among family members. Participants identified specific predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling factors that influence whether or not family members take responsibility in preventing prescription opioid misuse within their families. Rural adults also perceive that family-based education is important in preventing prescription opioid misuse.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that there is an interest in family-based approaches that enable or foster the skills and resources necessary to engage in prescription opioid misuse prevention behaviors. Specifically, family-based prevention programming should include efforts to shape knowledge and attitudes about prescription opioid misuse, increase resources to facilitate prevention behaviors, and build skills related to prevention.

Socioeconomic disparities in unhealthy weight: A need for health promotion among school-aged children

INTRODUCTION

Overweight and obesity as a major public health issue can lead to adverse health consequences during the life span. This study aimed to measure socioeconomic inequality in unhealthy weight among school students in Kermanshah, west of Iran.

METHODS

The cross-sectional study measured the socioeconomic-related inequalities in unhealthy weight among 1404 secondary school students aged 11-16 years in Kermanshah in 2018. Unhealthy weight is defined as body mass index of >25 kg/m² in the study. Socioeconomic-related inequality in unhealthy weight was calculated using the concentration index (C_n). A logistic regression model was used to estimate the marginal effect of independent variables.

RESULTS

The prevalence of unhealthy weight for the total sample was 0.13 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.11 -0.14). Of these, the prevalence of unhealthy weight for girls and boys was 0.11 (95% CI: 0.09-0.14) and 0.15 (95% CI: 0.12-0.18), respectively. The value of C_n for the total sample was 0.12 (95% CI: 0.03-0.2), which indicates a higher concentration of unhealthy weight among the high socioeconomic status (SES) students. Two factors of SES (49.11%) and gender (40.08%) had the largest contribution to socioeconomic inequality in unhealthy weight among the study students.

CONCLUSIONS

Socioeconomic-related inequality in unhealthy weight was concentered among high-SES students in the study. Thus, public health policies need to be formulated to change sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy dietary patterns among students with higher SES.

[Factors Influencing Quality of Life of Alcoholics Anonymous Members in Korea]

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to determine quality of life (QOL) related factors in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) members based on PRECEDE Model.

METHODS

A cross sectional survey was conducted with participants (N =203) from AA meeting in 11 alcohol counsel centers all over South Korea. Data were collected using a specially designed questionnaire based on the PRECEDE model and including QOL, epidemiological factors (including depression and perceived health status), behavioral factors (continuous abstinence and physical health status and practice), predisposing factors (abstinence self-efficacy and self-esteem), reinforcing factors (social capital and family functioning), and enabling factors. Data were analyzed using t-test, one way ANOVA, Tukey HSD test and hierarchical multiple regression analysis with SPSS (ver. 21.0).

RESULTS

Of the educational diagnostic variables, self-esteem (β=.23), family functioning (β=.12), abstinence self-efficacy (β=.12) and social capital (β=.11) were strong influential factors in AA members' QOL. In addition, epidemiological diagnostic variables such as depression (β=-.44) and perceived health status (β=.35) were the main factors in QOL. Also, physical health status and practice (β=.106), one of behavioral diagnostic variables was a beneficial factor in QOL. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed the determinant variables accounted for 44.0% of the variation in QOL (F=25.76, p<.001).

CONCLUSION

The finding of the study can be used as a framework for planning interventions in order to promote the quality of life of AA members. It is necessary to develop nursing intervention strategies for strengthening educational and epidemiological diagnostic variables in order to improve AA members' QOL.
