Abstract
Abnormal widening of the mandibular canal (MC) is rarely observed on radiography. Nonetheless, as most of the current research on abnormal mandibular widening is limited to case reports and MCs have relatively deep and hidden positions, there are challenges in diagnosing and formulating treatment plans for patients with abnormal MC widening. To provide ideas for the differential diagnosis and treatment choices of the characteristic clinical sign, this study included patients with abnormal widening of the MC between July 2014 and October 2023. The patient's medical records were reviewed, general information, disease details and radiographic features (panoramic reconstructive computed tomography) of MC widening were collected. Patients were followed up to assess treatment outcomes. In conclusion, the abnormal widening of the MC often implies a pathological state of the mandible. And different morphologies of the widened MC are helpful for differential diagnosis of protential mandibular disease.

Abstract
Anatomy was initially developed out of necessity to decrease surgery complications. Over time, anatomists and surgeons have sometimes used different terms for the same anatomical structures, thus resulting in numerous discrepancies in terminology between anatomy and surgery. To avoid any confusion or misunderstanding and to better elucidate the oral anatomy terms, the Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT) organized a group of specialists on oral anatomy, Terminologia Oroanatomica (ToA) working group, composed of dentists, anatomy researchers, anatomy educators, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and oral and maxillofacial radiologists. Within the ToA working group, major anatomical structures in the mandible, such as the mandibular canal, were focused and discussed to determine the most appropriate term, i.e., inferior alveolar canal. Although yet to be approved by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA), this article will preview some changes suggested by the ToA.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study focused on the detailed structure of microvessels of the neurotransmitter-positive vasa nervorum of the inferior alveolar nerve, vein, and artery in the mandibular canal (MC) to obtain information for improved safety in dental treatments. We also observed the detailed structure of the MC from the mental foramen to the mandibular foramen using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS In this study, mandibles from 45 sides of 23 human cadavers aged 76-104 years were examined by microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and CBCT analysis. These data were further evaluated by principal component analysis (PCA). RESULTS The microvessels of the vasa nervorum with calcitonin gene-related peptide- and neuropeptide Y-positive reactions were classified into 5 types: large (4.19%, 28/667); irregular large (7.35%, 49/667), numerous intermediate (29.23%, 195/667), irregular intermediate (29.23%, 195/667), and scattered fine (30.0%, 200/667) microvessels. The MC showed various structures from the 3rd molar to the premolars and was also classified into three types, including complete (57.0%, 228/400), partial (33.8%, 135/400), and unclear (9.2%, 37/400), from the mandibular foramen to the mental foramen. PCA results revealed that developed capillaries were mainly localized in the molar region. CONCLUSIONS Fine microvessels of the vasa nervorum expressing neurotransmitters are present from the molar to premolar region, which is key information for mandibular dental treatments. The different microvessel structures also indicate differences in specific characteristics between dentulous and edentulous cadavers regarding oral surgical and implant treatments.

Abstract
The general principles of anatomical terminology indicate that the "mandibular canal" should be named the "inferior alveolar canal" as it accommodates the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundles. Therefore, we performed a Delphi study to evaluate the current understanding and use of the terminology in different geographical regions and areas of expertise and to determine the appropriate terminology for this bony canal. A Delphi panel was formed and questions sent and answered via email about: field of expertise (anatomy, oral surgery/oral and maxillofacial (OMF) surgery, oral radiology/OMF radiology, plastic surgery, ENT surgery, or dentistry with the exception of oral/OMF surgery and oral/OMF radiology), years of experience in the field of expertise, country currently working in, "what is the name of the bony canal that contains the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle," and "what should the structure above be called, in general?" A total of 52 participants responded to the questionnaire. Half or more of the experts in anatomy, oral/OMF surgery, and ENT/plastic surgery considered "mandibular canal" to be the most appropriate name for this bony canal. In contrast, more than half of all experts in oral/OMF radiology and dentistry, that is, most fields of dentistry, considered "either mandibular canal or inferior alveolar canal" to be the appropriate name. The results of the Delphi study and general principles suggest that an alternative term for the "mandibular canal" should be "inferior alveolar canal."

Abstract
Purpose This study was performed to investigate mandibular canal displacement in patients with ameloblastoma using a 3-dimensional mirrored-model analysis. Materials and Methods The sample consisted of computed tomographic scans of patients with ameloblastoma (n=10) and healthy controls (n=20). The amount of mandibular canal asymmetry was recorded as a continuous variable, while the buccolingual (yaw) and supero-inferior (pitch) directions of displacement were classified as categorical variables. The t-test for independent samples and the Fisher exact test were used to compare groups in terms of differences between sides and the presence of asymmetric inclinations, respectively (P<0.05). Results The length of the mandibular canal was similar on both sides in both groups. The ameloblastoma group presented more lateral (2.40±4.16 mm) and inferior (−1.97±1.92 mm) positions of the mental foramen, and a more buccal (1.09±2.75 mm) position of the middle canal point on the lesion side. Displacement of the mandibular canal tended to be found in the anterior region in patients with ameloblastoma, occurring toward the buccal and inferior directions in 60% and 70% of ameloblastoma patients, respectively. Conclusion Mandibular canal displacement due to ameloblastoma could be detected by this superimposed mirrored method, and displacement was more prevalent toward the inferior and buccal directions. This displacement affected the mental foramen position, but did not lead to a change in the length of the mandibular canal. The control group presented no mandibular canal displacement.

Abstract
AbstractThis study aimed to determine the number of mental foramina (MFs) in vervet monkeys of the Cercopithecini tribe and perform a µCT analysis of mental foramina and mandibular canal morphology. A total of 19 simian skulls belonging to Chlorocebus aethiops species were used in the analyses. An average of three mental foramina was present in most individuals from the analyzed group. The Mann–Whitney test revealed no statistically significant difference between the number of foramina on the right- and left-hand side. Likewise, no statistically significant differences between the number of MFs across sexes were observed. Correlation coefficient values between mandibular length and the ipsilateral number of MF indicate a weak and statistically non-significant (p > 0.05) linear relationship. Volumetric reconstructions revealed the presence of a single periosteal sheathed mandibular canal terminated with four small mental foramina.
