Nutrition as the foundation for successful aging: a focus on dietary protein and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids

Skeletal muscle plays a critical role throughout the aging process. People living with sarcopenia, a progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, often experience diminished quality of life, which can be attributed to a long period of decline and disability. Therefore, it is important to identify modifiable factors that preserve skeletal muscle and promote successful aging (SA). In this review, SA was defined as (1) low cardiometabolic risk, (2) preservation of physical function, and (3) positive state of wellbeing, with nutrition as an integral component. Several studies identify nutrition, specifically high-quality protein (eg, containing all essential amino acids), and long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), as positive regulators of SA. Recently, an additive anabolic effect of protein and n-3 PUFAs has been identified in skeletal muscle of older adults. Evidence further suggests that the additive effect of protein and n-3 PUFAs may project beyond skeletal muscle anabolism and promote SA. The key mechanism(s) behind the enhanced effects of intake of protein and n-3 PUFAs needs to be defined. The first objective of this review is to evaluate skeletal muscle as a driver of cardiometabolic health, physical function, and wellbeing to promote SA. The second objective is to examine observational and interventional evidence of protein and n-3 PUFAs on skeletal muscle to promote SA. The final objective is to propose mechanisms by which combined optimal intake of high-quality protein and n-3 PUFAs likely play a key role in SA. Current evidence suggests that increased intake of protein above the Recommended Dietary Allowance and n-3 PUFAs above the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendations for late middle-aged and older adults is required to maintain skeletal muscle mass and to promote SA, potentially through the mechanistical target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1).

Examining the relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea and eating behaviours and attitudes: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Between 60 and 90% of adults with OSA are reported as overweight. The co-existence of obesity and OSA can greatly increase an individual's risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. To better understand this relationship between OSA and weight, this review aimed to investigate if there is evidence of certain eating behaviours or eating attitudes that might be found in adults living with OSA.

METHODS

We searched four databases (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo and Web of Science) on January 17th, 2022, to identify studies assessing the association between eating patterns and OSA in adults. Twenty-one studies met the inclusion criteria. A narrative synthesis was conducted on the included studies, following the vote-counting method.

RESULTS

There is preliminary evidence that the time of day when calories are consumed is associated with lower OSA severity. No other clear patterns of eating behaviours or attitudes were identified however this may be due to disparity within research studies and their reported results.

CONCLUSION

Further research is needed to examine the relationship between eating times and OSA severity. We recommend standardising the approach to examining the eating patterns of those living with OSA and the relationship that this might have on OSA symptoms as well as looking at attitudes towards food in this population. This may prove helpful in providing a better understanding of the relationship between OSA and persons with overweight and help in future intervention development.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Current insights into mechanisms of action in systemic lupus erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is one of the autoimmune diseases characterized by the lack of self-tolerance and the formation of immune complexes and nuclear autoantigens resulting in inflammation in multiple organs. Nowadays, the major aim of SLE therapy is the control of disease activity. However, the biological heterogeneity between patients and the absence of safe and specific targeted treatments complicate the lupus management. Therefore, the potential prophylactic effects of natural therapy considering the potential side effects of classical pharmacology, also the role of diet therapy in decreasing co-morbidities and improving quality of life in SLE patients could be a promising approach to SLE disease. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs) are one of the agents that are considered for their preventive and therapeutic properties in disease activity of SLE and the related complications. The intake of omega-3 PUFAs likely has a direct relationship with improvements in inflammatory, cardiovascular, depressive, and neuromotor symptoms of the patients. The current review summarizes clinical and preclinical studies with comprehensive insights into the mechanisms of action of omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3 FAs) in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus to provide an update on the negative and positive aspects of the intake of omega-3 FAs in SLE patients.

Plasma polyunsaturated fatty acid concentrations and sleep apnea risk: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study

Background

Previous observational studies have found that lower levels of circulating polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were associated with a higher risk of sleep apnea (SA). However, the causality of the association remains unclear.

Materials and methods

We used the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to assess the causal association of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids with SA. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) predicting the plasma level of PUFAs at the suggestive genome-wide significance level (p < 5 × 10^–6) were selected as instrumental variables (IVs) from the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) (n = ∼8,000) Consortium. For outcomes, the summary-level statistics of SA were obtained from the latest genome-wide association study (GWAS), which combined five cohorts with a total number of 25,008 SA cases and 172,050 snoring cases (total = 523,366).

Results

We found no association of α-linolenic acid (ALA) [odds ratio (OR) = 1.09 per% changed, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.67–1.78], eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (OR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.88–1.01), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) (OR = 0.95, 95% CI 0.88–1.02), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (OR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.96–1.02) with the risk of SA using inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method. Moreover, for omega-6 PUFAs, no association between linoleic acid (LA) (OR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.96–1.01), arachidonic acid (AA) (1.00, 95% CI 0.99–1.01), and adrenic acid (AdrA) (0.93, 95% CI 0.71–1.21) with the risk of SA was found. Similarly, no associations of PUFAs with SA were found in single-locus MR analysis.

Conclusion

In the current study, we first found that there is no genetic evidence to support the causal role of omega-3 and omega-6 PUFAs in the risk of SA. From a public health perspective, our findings refute the notion that consumption of foods rich in PUFAs or the use of PUFAs supplementation can reduce the risk of SA.
