Current status of neuroimaging research on the effects of acupuncture: a bibliometric and visual analyses

OBJECTIVE

To conduct an inductive analysis of neuroimaging studies following the global popularity surrounding the effects of acupuncture.

METHODS

The relevant works of literature on acupuncture effects-related neuroimaging studies were retrieved from the web of science core collection database from the date of its establishment to 2022. Bibexcel software was used to extract information, such as article numbers, countries, journals, agencies, funding sources and keywords. The VOSviewer software's co-occurrence and clustering module was used for the co-occurrence and cluster analysis of collaborative networks and high frequency keywords, such as authors, institutions and countries.

RESULTS

Neuroimaging research on the effects of acupuncture began in the 1960 s and has since received the extensive attention of scholars. China, The United States and South Korea conduct more neuroimaging research on the effects of acupuncture than other countries. Academic journals such as Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Neural Regeneration Research and Acupuncture in Medicine have published the highest number of acupuncture-related neuroimaging articles. Moreover, cluster analysis differentiates high-frequency keywords into six clusters. Furthermore, the use of the keyword 'density atlas' reveals that neuroimaging research on the effects of acupuncture surrounding pain and neurofunctional rehabilitation is currently the research focus.

CONCLUSIONS

This bibliometric study identifies six important research hot spots: Static brain functional connectivity analysis of acupuncture analgesic effects, key theories on the scientific problems of acupuncture, acupuncture analgesic effect of the placebo effect, the neuroimaging of acupoint ST-36, the value of acupuncture in regulating the autonomic nerves and acupuncture therapy as complementary medicine.

Application of acupuncture in the emergency department for patients with ileus: A pilot prospective cohort clinical study

Acupuncture can be conveniently used for pain control in patients with a variety of conditions, and it has obvious effects on various acute pains. In 2018, we implemented a program for emergency treatment with Chinese medicine to promote the integration of Chinese and Western medicine at the Emergency Department (ED). Ileus is a common cause of abdominal pain among patients in the ED, and it is an indication for emergency treatment with Chinese medicine. This study investigated the efficacy of acupuncture as a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)-based treatment method for the treatment of patients with ileus in the ED. We analyzed data of patients with ileus, who visited ED between January and December 2019, and compared the length of ED stay between the Western medicine group and the Western medicine plus acupuncture group. Furthermore, pain intensity was measured by a visual analogue scale before and after acupuncture. We found that the length of ED stay was 10.8 hours lesser in the Western medicine plus acupuncture group than in the Western medicine group (P = .04), and the visual analogue scale score decreased by 2.0 on average from before to after acupuncture treatment (P = .02). Acupuncture treatment was effective and rapid in relieving the symptoms and discomfort in patients with ileus and in reducing their length of stay in the ED.

Effect of Acupuncture along Meridians on Pain Degree and Treatment of Acute Lumbar Sprain

Aim. This study is aimed at investigating the effect of acupuncture along meridians on pain degree and treatment of acute lumbar sprain. Methods. A total of 96 patients with acute lumbar sprain from May 2019 to March 2021 in our hospital were selected and divided into the study and control groups. The patients in the control group were administered conventional western medicine and massage therapy, while the study group underwent acupuncture along meridians based on the control group. The therapeutic effect, visual analogue scale (VAS), Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), and lumbar range of motion (ROM) scores, emG inversion times, emG amplitude of the sacrospinalis muscle, and the serum TNF-α and IL-6 levels were determined. Results. The total effective rate of the study group was significantly higher than that of the control group. After treatment, the VAS, RMDQ, and ROM scores of the study group were significantly lower than those of the control group. Before the intervention, the EMG inversion times and the EMG amplitude of the spinous process muscle in the study group were not significantly different from those in the control group. After the intervention, the number and amplitude of EMG reversal in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group. After the intervention, the serum levels of TNF-α (pg/ml) and IL-6 (pg/ml) in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group. $Conclusion$ . Meridian acupuncture for acute lumbar sprain can effectively improve body function, relieve pain, regulate serum inflammatory factors, and improve the overall therapeutic effect.
