[Incidence of depression and associated factors in older adults in Bagé, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil]

To evaluate the cumulative incidence of depression and its associated factors in the older population living in the urban area of the municipality of Bagé, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, a prospective cohort study was conducted from 2008 to 2016/2017. The analysis was restricted to 615 older adults with complete information on the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), both at baseline and at follow-up, and who did not present depression in 2008. To calculate crude and adjusted incidence ratios and 95% confidence interval, Poisson regression with robust variance adjustment was used, including the baseline variables. A hierarchical model of four levels of determination was used. The variables were controlled for those of the same or of higher levels, and the p-value ≤ 0.20 was established to remain in the analysis model. In 2008, 523 older people did not have depression and 92 had been screened with the disease. In 2016/2017, of the 523 individuals without depression in the baseline measure, 10.3% tested positive at screening (incident cases), whereas 89.7% of the older adults remained free of the condition. Of the 92 older adults with depression in 2008, 32.6% continued to present depressive symptoms at follow-up and 67.3% had remission of symptoms. Leaving home once or never and being incapable of doing functional and instrumental activities of daily living were associated with a higher risk of positive screening for depression. The results reinforce the multidimensional and dynamic character of depression, which alternates short and long episodes, and may become recurrent and chronic.

Depression among the elderly: a population-based study in Southern Brazil

This study assessed the prevalence of depression and associated factors among Brazilian elderly in Arroio Trinta, Southern Brazil. During home visits, a questionnaire was administered to all people aged 60 or older living in the municipality in 2013. The Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form (GDS-15) was used. The χ 2 test was performed to compare proportions and Poisson regression with robust adjustment of variance in the multivariate analysis. The effect measure applied was the prevalence ratio. The prevalence of depression among 552 (out of 568) elderly studied was 20.4% (95%CI 17.3 - 23.8). An adjusted analysis conducted according to a predefined hierarchical model showed higher prevalence ratios of depression among females, single people, those with lower household income, smokers, and those who had been hospitalized in the 12 months preceding the interview. Engaging in leisure-time activities such as dances and religious activities or regular physical activity were protective factors for depression. Results from this study demonstrate the need of proper treatment and management of this condition at the community level.

Prevalence of depressive symptoms among elderly women from a Center of Reference and Care for the Elderly in the city of Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract Objective: To analyze depressive symptoms and factors associated with this pathology among elderly women. Method: A cross-sectional study nested in the longitudinal study of the Care and Reference Center for the Elderly of the Universidade de Passo Fundo (Passo Fundo University) in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was carried out. Standardized questionnaires, pre-coded with sociodemographic information, were applied. The Geriatric Depression Scale was used to assess the outcome of depression. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to evaluate the level of physical activity and parameters of Body Mass Index were used to assess nutritional status. The chi-squared test or the Fisher exact Test were applied to verify the association between outcome and exposure. Results: 313 elderly women were assessed. They were aged from 60 to 89 years, and most (284 - 91.3%) belonged to economic classes B and C. Depression was present in 22 (7.1%) of the elderly women. In bivariate analysis, depression was associated with non-white elderly women (14.6%; p=0.039) who were classified as insufficiently active (10.6%; p=0.033). Conclusion: The results indicate the need to encourage the elderly to perform physical activities to contribute to the prevention of geriatric depression.

Status de fragilidade entre idosos com indicativo de depressão segundo o sexo

Objetivos : Descrever as variáveis socioeconômicas de idosos com indicativo de depressão segundo o sexo, verificar a associação entre o status de fragilidade e o sexo, e descrever o componente do fenótipo de fragilidade mais impactado entre os idosos com indicativo de depressão pré-frágeis e frágeis. Métodos Estudo observacional, transversal e analítico, conduzido com 418 idosos com indicativo de depressão residentes no município de Uberaba, MG. Utilizaram-se a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica Abreviada e o Fenótipo de Fragilidade de Fried. Foram utilizados análise descritiva e o teste Qui-quadrado (p < 0,05). Resultados Verificou-se que, entre os idosos com indicativo de depressão, 27,8% eram frágeis e 51,7%, pré-frágeis. O status de fragilidade não esteve associado ao sexo (p = 0,910). Dentre os pré-frágeis, os componentes do fenótipo mais impactados foram o autorrelato de exaustão/fadiga para as mulheres e diminuição da força muscular para os homens. Nos frágeis, prevaleceu a diminuição da força muscular para ambos os sexos. Conclusão Mediante os achados deste estudo, conclui-se que, embora não tenha ocorrido associação entre a síndrome de fragilidade e o sexo, a identificação dos componentes do fenótipo de fragilidade mais impactados pode favorecer o atendimento multiprofissional, considerando as especificidades dos grupos. O diagnóstico precoce contribui para o estabelecimento de condutas e prevenção de agravos.
