Effects of two litter amendments on air NH3 levels in broiler closed-houses

An assessment of the impacts of litter treatments on the litter quality and broiler performance: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective

The choice of the most suitable litter treatment should be based on scientific evidence. This systematic review assessed the effectiveness of litter treatments on ammonia concentration, pH, moisture and pathogenic microbiota of the litter and their effects on body weight, feed intake, feed conversion and mortality of broilers.

Methods

The systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed (Medline), Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and Scielo databases to retrieve articles published from January 1998 to august 2019. Means, standard deviations and sample sizes were extracted from each study. The response variables were analyzed using the mean difference (MD) or standardized mean difference (SMD), (litter treatment minus control group). All variables were analyzed using random effects meta-analyses.

Results

Subgroup meta-analysis revealed that acidifiers reduce pH (P<0.001), moisture (P = 0.002) ammonia (P = 0.011) and pathogenic microbiota (P <0.001) of the litter and improves the weight gain (P = 0.019) and decreases the mortality rate of broilers (P<0.001) when compared with controls. Gypsum had a positive effect on ammonia reduction (P = 0.012) and improved feed conversion (P = 0.023). Alkalizing agents raise the pH (P = 0.035), worsen feed conversion (P<0.001), increase the mortality rate (P <0.001), decrease the moisture content (P<0.001) and reduce the pathogenic microbiota of the litter (P<0.001) once compared to controls. Superphosphate and adsorbents reduce, respectively, pH (P<0.001) and moisture (P = 0.007) of the litter compared to control groups.

Conclusion

None of the litter treatments influenced the feed intake of broilers. Meta-analyses of the selected studies showed positive and significant effects of the litter treatments on broiler performance and litter quality when compared with controls. Alkalizing was associated with worse feed conversion and high mortality of broilers.

Influence of Two Plant Extracts on Broiler Performance, Oxidative Stability of Meat and Odorous Gas Emissions from Excreta

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of plant extracts derived from Mentha arvensis (MA) and Geranium thunbergii (GT) on broiler performance, carcass yield, digestive organ weights, meat quality and odorous gas emissions from the excreta. A total of 210 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to one of the following dietary treatments for five weeks: (1) control, (2) 0.1% MA, (3) 0.05% GT, (4) 0.1% GT and 0.1% mixed preparation with varying ratios such as (5) 0.1% 1MA:1GT, (6) 0.1% 1MA:4GT and (7) 0.1% 4MA:1GT. The weight gain (0–3 weeks) was significantly (P<0.01) increased in response to dietary inclusion of plant extracts; however, no significant differences were observed in breast and thigh meat yield (P>0.05). Additionally, no differences were observed in proventriculus, gizzard, pancreas, small and large intestine weight. When compared with the control group, birds fed plant extracts had the lowest meat TBARS value after 0 and 3 weeks of storage (P<0.05). Moreover, the pH value was significantly lower (P<0.05) in the plant extract supplemented groups at 0 weeks. The faecal H2S emissions were significantly reduced at 0 h and 6 h in all supplemented groups relative to the control (P<0.05). Similarly, NH3 emissions were reduced at 0 h and 6 h for all supplemented groups except the 0.1% 1MA:1GT group (P<0.05). Overall, the results of the present study indicate that plant extracts supplementation can be used to improve performance and meat quality of broiler chickens while reducing the emission of harmful gases from the excreta.

Effects of ammonia on intestinal microflora and productive performance of laying ducks

Atmospheric ammonia is harmful to poultry and human health. The effect of ammonia on the intestinal microflora of laying ducks is still unknown. In this study, the effects of atmospheric ammonia and exposure time on the intestinal microflora of laying ducks were investigated using 16S rDNA sequencing technology. The body weight, ovary weight, spleen weight, liver weight, and productive performance of laying ducks were also recorded, and the relationship between intestinal microflora diversity and productive performance was analyzed. The results showed that Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla. At the phylum and genus levels, with the exception of the phylum Firmicutes and the genus Sutterella, the top 10 most abundant phyla and genera differed significantly when the ammonia concentration was increased from 10 to 75 ppm and/or the exposure time was extended from 10 to 30 D. Laying rate was highly significantly lower in ducks exposed to 75 ppm ammonia for 10 D compared with those exposed to 10 ppm ammonia for 10 D. Body, ovary, and spleen weights also decreased when the ammonia concentration was increased. At the genus level, Flavonifractor was highly significantly positively correlated with ovary weight. Methanocorpusculum and Anaerotruncus were significantly positively correlated with ovary weight. Lactobacillus was significantly positively correlated with spleen weight. Phascolarctobacterium, Sphaerochaeta, Erysipelotrichaceae_UCG.004, and Lactococcus were significantly positively correlated with spleen weight. These results indicated that ammonia affected the diversity of the intestinal microbiota and the productive performance of laying ducks. Several intestinal microbiota genera were also correlated with organ weights.

Effectiveness of poultry litter amendments on bacterial survival and Eimeria oocyst sporulation

AIM

Broilers' optimum performance in response to their genetic potential depends on litter environment which is ideal for bacterial survival and coccidian oocyst sporulation. An in vitro evaluation was conducted for the effectiveness of superphosphate, meta-bisulfide, and charcoal litter amendments in minimizing Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium survival, Eimeria oocyst count, and sporulation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Three groups of 16 litter trays were prepared and inoculated with E. coli O157:H7, S. Typhimurium, and Eimeria non-sporulated oocyst. A set of four trays in each group was designed for each one of the chemical amendments. A total of 720 litter samples were collected and examined for bacterial counts, Eimeria oocyst count, and sporulation during the experimental period (35 days).

RESULTS

Litter moisture and pH revealed a highly significant (p<0.001) reduction in all treated litter trays compared to control. Total bacterial count (TBC), total Enterobacteriaceae count, and S. Typhimurium count showed a highly significant (p<0.001) reduction in meta-bisulfide-treated trays compared to other amendments and positive control. Meanwhile, Eimeria oocyst count and sporulation revealed a highly significant (p<0.001) reduction in superphosphate, meta-bisulfide, and charcoal-treated trays, respectively. Temperature revealed a highly significant (p<0.001) weak positive correlation with pH of all inoculated trays, a highly significant (p<0.001) weak negative correlation with moisture percentage of E. coli O157:H7 and S. Typhimurium inoculated trays, and a highly significant (p<0.001) weak negative correlation with TBC. Meanwhile, relative humidity revealed significant (p≤0.005) weak positive correlation with moisture percentage of E. coli O157:H7 inoculated trays.

CONCLUSION

The study concluded that regular usage with periodical reapplication of litter amendments as meta-bisulfide or superphosphate in poultry farms is one of the indispensable managemental and preventive measures for minimizing bacterial survival and inhibiting Eimeria oocyst maturation and sporulation.
