One Alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol Improves Growth Performance, Tibia Quality, and Meat Color of Broilers Fed Calcium- and Phosphorus-Deficient Diets

Vitamin D3 enhanced intestinal phosphate cotransporter genes in young and growing broilers

The influence of dietary vitamin D₃ (VD3) levels on growth, bone performance, and duodenal type IIb sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporter (NaPi-IIb) genes in broiler chicken were studied. One-day-old male Ross308 broilers (n = 432) were allocated into 6 treatment groups with each group consisting of 6 cage pens. Each treatment group received diet containing different amounts of VD3 (80, 200, 500, 1,250, 3,125, or 7,813 IU per kg of diet) from a day-old to 31 D of age. Dietary available phosphorus and calcium were kept the same across all treatments in each phase. At 14 D, influence of VD3 on BW gain was found in the birds that received VD3 of 3,125 IU/kg and 200 IU/kg (P < 0.05). Toe ash and tibia ash linearly increased (P < 0.05) at 14 D with increase in dietary VD3_. There was no significant influence of dietary VD3 on tibia breaking strength. In both phases, relative expression of duodenal NaPi-IIb linearly increased (P < 0.01) with increase in dietary VD3. At 14 D, highest expression of 3.2 folds was observed in birds treated with VD3 at 7,813 IU/kg of feed. At 31 D, birds that received VD3 levels of 3,125 and 7,813 IU/kg of feed showed 2.9 folds higher in NaPi-IIb expression compared with those fed lowest level of VD3 at 80 IU/kg of feed. When dietary calcium and phosphorus were maintained at the standard requirement, increase in dietary VD3 did not improve growth performance. For optimum growth and bone characteristics, dietary inclusion of VD3 at 500 IU/kg was adequate for both starter and grower broiler diets. Vitamin D₃ enhanced the expression of NaPi-IIb at higher doses and thus improving the tibia ash content in high VD3 treatment groups. This study reported for the first time an increased in the expression of duodenal NaPi-IIb in 31-day-old broilers in response to high dietary VD3 levels.

Nutritional requirements of meat-type and egg-type ducks: what do we know?

The demand for duck meat, duck eggs, and associated products is increasing each year. Classic and modern selection programs have been applied to enhance the economic traits of ducks to satisfy the requirements of consumers and enhance the incomes of producers. The nutritional requirements of unselected ducks may not be adequate, however, to fulfill the potential productivity performance of modern birds, including both meat-type and egg-type ducks. In particular, an imbalanced diet is associated with low productive performance and signs of nutritional deficiency (if insufficient nutrients are supplied), as well as with high feed costs and manure problems that reflect flock health and welfare (if excessive nutrients are supplied). Thus, the main aim of this review is to summarize the results of previous studies that estimated the nutrient requirements of meat-type and egg-type ducks in order to evaluate current knowledge and to identify further issues that need to be addressed. In addition, the results obtained in previous studies are compared in order to understand how to lower commercial feed costs, fulfill the genetic potential of selected ducks, protect the environment from pollution, and satisfy the welfare and health needs of ducks.

Effects of Moringa oleifera leaves as a substitute for alfalfa meal on nutrient digestibility, growth performance, carcass trait, meat quality, antioxidant capacity and biochemical parameters of rabbits

This contribution reports the effects of Moringa oleifera leaves (MOLs) meal on the growth performances, nutrient digestibility, carcass trait, meat quality, antioxidant capacity and biochemical parameters of growing New Zealand white rabbits. The MOL was substituted for alfalfa meal at levels of 0, 10%, 20% and 30% to obtain respective diets MOL0, MOL10, MOL20 and MOL30. Each treatment was replicated five times with 10 rabbits per replicate. Results showed the average daily weight gain (ADWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of rabbits fed MOL20 diet were significantly better (p < 0.05) than those of other three dietary groups. Liver and spleen index of rabbits fed MOL20 and MOL30 diets was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of the groups fed with lower M. oleifera leaves (MOL0, MOL10). The meat drip loss of rabbits fed with diet MOL10 was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than that of rabbits fed other diets. All rabbits fed MOL dietary groups had lower (p < 0.05) shear force of longissimus dorsi than the group without M. oleifera leaves. No significant differences were found in the digestibility of crude fibre (CF), crude fat (EE), ash, crude protein (CP) and nitrogen-free extract (NFE) among the dietary groups. Moringa oleifera leaves also have a significant impact on serum albumin (ALB), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), triiodothyroxine (T₃ ) and tetraiodothyroxine (T₄ ) values and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in serum and liver. The results indicated that M. oleifera leaves could be developed as a good feed source, and it not only could substitute for alfalfa meal well but also has a significant effect on growth performance, meat quality, antioxidant and biochemical parameters of rabbits.

Comparison of Bioavailability of 1α-Hydroxycholecalciferol and Cholecalciferol in Broiler Chicken Diets

The present study aims to compare the relative bioavailability (RBV) of 1α-hydroxycholecalciferol (1α-OH-D₃) to cholecalciferol (D₃) in 1- to 21-d-old broiler chicks fed with calcium (Ca)- and phosphorus (P)-deficient diets. A total of 400 male of 1-d-old Ross 308 broilers were randomly assigned to 8 treatments with 5 replicates each. Five levels of D₃ (0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 µg/kg) and three levels of 1α-OH-D₃ (1.25, 2.5, and 5 µg/kg) were added to a basal diet. The basal diet contained 0.50% Ca and 0.25% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP), without D₃. The RBV of 1α-OHD₃ to D₃ was determined by the slope ratio method. Using bodyweight gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, and plasma Ca as criteria, the RBV of 1α-OH-D₃ to D₃ were 4.78, 4.75, 4.50, and 4.21, respectively. Using tibia breaking-strength, weight, length, width, ash weight and content, and Ca and P content as criteria, the RBV of 1α-OH-D₃ to D₃ were 5.58, 5.16, 4.42, 4.70, 5.03, 4.46, 4.70, and 4.79. Using femur weight, length, width, ash weight and content, and Ca and P content as criteria, the RBV of 1α-OH-D₃ to D₃ were 5.09, 4.43, 3.19, 5.83, 5.21, 5.27, and 5.31. Using metatarsus weight, length, width, ash weight and content, and Ca and P content as criteria, the RBV of 1α-OHD₃ to D₃ were 5.00, 4.05, 5.94, 4.73, 5.33, 5.64, and 4.28. These data indicate that the RBV of 1α-OH-D₃ to D₃ is 4.84 in promoting growth performance and bone mineralization in broilers from 1 to 21 d of age.

Use of vitamin d3 and its metabolites in broiler chicken feed on performance, bone parameters and meat quality

The objective of this experiment was to assess the use of different vitamin D metabolites in the feed of broiler chickens and the effects of the metabolites on performance, bone parameters and meat quality. A total of 952 one-day-old male broiler chicks were distributed in a completely randomised design, with four treatments, seven replicates and 34 birds per experimental unit. The treatments consisted of four different sources of vitamin D included in the diet, D₃, 25(OH)D₃, 1,25(OH)₂D₃, and 1α(OH)D₃, providing 2000 and 1600 IU of vitamin D in the starter (1 to 21 d) and growth phases (22 to 42 d), respectively. Mean weight, feed:gain and weight gain throughout the rearing period were less in animals fed 1α(OH)D₃ when compared with the other treatments (p<0.05). No significant differences were noted among the treatments (p>0.05) for various bone parameters. Meat colour differed among the treatments (p>0.05). All of the metabolites used in the diets, with the exception of 1α(OH)D₃, can be used for broiler chickens without problems for performance and bone quality, however, some aspects of meat quality were affected.
