Salicylate Toxicity from Genital Exposure to a Methylsalicylate-Containing Rubefacient

Experimental and computational thermochemistry: how strong is the intramolecular hydrogen bond in alkyl 2-hydroxybenzoates (salicylates)

Hydrogen bonding (HB) is a fascinating phenomenon that exhibits unusual properties in organic and biomolecules. The qualitative manifestation of hydrogen bonds is known in numerous chemical processes. However, quantifying HB strength is a challenging task, especially in the case of intra-molecular hydrogen bonds. It is qualitatively well established that the alkyl 2-hydroxybenzoates have strong intra-HB. The thermochemical methods suitable for the determination of intra-HB strength were the focus of this study. The experimental gas phase formation enthalpies for alkyl 2-hydroxybenzoates (including methyl, ethyl, n-propyl and n-butyl) at 298.15 K were derived from a combination of vapour pressure measurements and high-precision combustion calorimetry and validated by the quantum chemical methods G3MP2 and G4. The intra-HB strength in methyl 2-hydroxybenzoate was determined from the evaluated gas-phase enthalpies of formation by comparing the energies of cis- and trans- conformers, by well-balanced reactions, the "para-ortho" method and the "HB and Out" method. All these methods give a common level of intra-molecular hydrogen bond strength of -43 kJ mol-1. The intra-HB strength was found to be independent of the chain length of the alkyl 2-hydroxybenzoates.

The Potential Cutaneous Effects of Pornography Addiction: A Narrative Review

Pornography addiction is an area of increasing concern, particularly due to the ubiquitous nature of pornographic material on the Internet. Even so, there is no formal Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) inclusion of compulsive pornography use as a behavioral addiction. Although the psychosocial impacts of pornography addiction have been studied, the risk of direct skin injuries and behavioral changes brought about by excessive pornography usage remain to be seen. Adult males constitute the majority of cases of engaging in risky and violent sexual behaviors with an unclear association with pornography consumption. Adult females may be likely to copy pubic hair trimming patterns analogous to those seen in pornographic content, even though attitudes towards labiaplasty are unclear. Finally, adolescents regularly exposed to pornography have been found to replicate sexual activity seen in pornographic material and have earlier sexual activity. In the literature evaluated, an association between pornographic material and direct cutaneous disease remains a major area of further research.

Poisoning Through Pediatric Skin: Cases from the Literature

Poisoning through pediatric skin leading to acute systemic symptoms is a relatively uncommonly reported phenomenon. Systemic toxicity through the skin typically occurs by direct contact between therapeutic or non-therapeutic topical agents and the skin. Though uncommon, poisoning through pediatric skin can have significant consequences and must be recognized so the offending agent may be discontinued and appropriate treatment initiated. We performed a literature search for all article types between 1950 and April 2016 to provide a single source of detectable cases of acute toxicity in pediatric patients due to percutaneous exposure. This literature review discusses relevant pediatric skin physiology along with reports of poisoning events that resulted in systemic signs and symptoms and even death to provide a comprehensive report on causes of pediatric poisoning through the skin.
