Indigestion Leads to Depression: Avicenna's Point of View

The effect of topical olive oil application on the symptoms of infantile colic: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial

Background and Aims

Infantile colic is one of the most common disorders in the first months of infants' lives. This condition hurts parents' moods. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the topical use of olive oil on infantile colic symptoms.

Methods

The study was carried out on 80 infants 1-3 months old, randomly allocated into two groups, receiving abdominal massage with olive oil thrice a day in the intervention group (n = 40) and the same procedure with liquid paraffin in the placebo group (n = 40), for 14 successive days. During this period, the parents recorded the episodes of colic, duration of colic, crying intensity, and episodes of defecation. These variables were assessed and compared at the beginning and on the 7th and 14th days.

Results

The mean crying duration changed from 4.05 ± 2.44 to 1.41 ± 1.03 h/day (65% decrease) in the olive oil group and from 3.85 ± 1.37 to 1.60 ± 1.32 h/day (58% decrease) in the paraffin group (p = 0.38). The episodes of crying were reduced from 5.79 ± 4.56 to 2.51 ± 4.93 episodes/day (↓57%) in the olive group and from 6.01 ± 3.40 to 3.01 ± 2.40 episodes/day (↓50%) in the paraffin oil group (p = 0.14). Furthermore, the intensity of crying was decreased from 9.04 ± 1.54 to 4.48 ± 2.17 (p < 0.001) in the olive oil group and from 9.0 ± 1.20 to 4.77 ± 1.68 (p < 0.001) in the paraffin oil group. On the 14th day, the crying intensity showed no significant difference between the two groups.

Conclusion

Abdominal massage with olive oil has the same effect as massage with paraffin oil in reducing the symptoms of infantile colic.

Diagnosis Protocol of Stomach Distemperament for Clinical Practice in Iranian Traditional Medicine: A Narrative Review

BACKGROUND

In Iranian traditional medicine (ITM) stomach is the important organ in the body. Its disorders can affect other organs such as liver, heart and also can cause depression. Stomach distemperaments can cause some disorders. The purpose of this study was to provide a diagnostic method of stomach distemperament for clinical practice.

METHODS

In this study authoritative ITM books such as Canon of Avicenna, Zakhirah-E-Kharazm Shahi by Hakim Esmail Jorjani, Kamel al-Sina'ah al-Tibbiyah by Ali ibn al-'Abbas al-Majusi were assessed and symptoms and signs of stomach distemperament were collected.

RESULTS

Stomach has some normal temperament. The imbalance in temperament and humor can cause distemperments. There are 12 types of stomach distemperament and based on symptoms and signs a primary protocol is designed for diagnosis of stomach distemperament.

CONCLUSION

There is no available guideline for gastric distemperamet diagnosis protocol. As a result, the presented protocol should be considered for use in clinical practice.

Depression and Dyspepsia: An Implication of Islamic Resources

Depression is a common mental disorder and the leading cause of disability in the worldwide. Based on Islamic resources, indigestion and dyspepsia can lead to depression. In modern medicine, though many somatic diseases have been named as possible causes of depression, the effect of gastrointestinal disorders on depression is still an enigma. Therefore, the focus of this study is to explore the available scientific literature of modern medicine in order to find the footprint of effect of indigestion on depression. In this study, related articles were retrieved from PubMed, Ovid, Proquest and Magiran databases by using the Medical Subject Heading keywords "depression," "psychology," "dyspepsia" and "gastrointestinal diseases." In the next step, studies, which are exactly confirm the Islamic viewpoint, were selected from the retrieved articles. Only one prospective study in 2012 has stated that people with functional gastrointestinal disorders and without elevated levels of anxiety and depression at baseline had significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression at 12-year follow-up. Based on Islamic viewpoint, indigestion can lead to depression, but this aspect approved by only one 12-year prospective population-based study in our review. It seems that it is necessary to conduct complementary studies investigating this hypothesis.

Herbal Remedies for Functional Dyspepsia and Traditional Iranian Medicine Perspective

CONTEXT

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a functional gastro-intestinal disorder with high prevalence. Among various treatment options, treatment by complementary and alternative medicines especially herbal remedies also practiced. Traditional Iranian medicine (TIM), a valuable resource of valid applied studies of ancient Iranian scholars, recommends numerous medicinal plants to treat dyspepsia symptoms. In this study, through investigation of TIM references, we aimed to identify medicinal plants for treatment of digestion insufficiency.

EVIDENCE ACQUISITION

In this qualitative study, dyspepsia symptoms including fullness, early satiety, bloating, nausea, and belching were checked under reliable sources of traditional medicine. Then medicinal plants recommended for the treatment of the symptoms were extracted from the books. Likewise, for investigating the pharmacological properties of medicinal plants used for the relieving of dyspepsia symptoms, electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and some Iranian databases like SID and IranMedex were employed.

RESULTS

The study yielded 105 plants from 37 families which could treat various dyspepsia symptoms; fifty-seven plants, mainly from Apiaceae, Lamiaceae, Amaryllidaceae and Zingiberaceae had digestive effects. In this research, based on the information in TIM reference texts, we obtained 58 plants effective for bloating, 40 for nausea, 37 for appetite loss and 7 for belching. In human clinical trials conducted on medicinal plants effective for FD symptoms, 7 single plants were used.

CONCLUSIONS

Finding the medicinal plants effective on digestion insufficiency based on TIM could suggest a better strategy for the relieving of dyspepsia symptoms. Traditional Iranian medicine prescribes medicinal plants based on each patient's personal characteristics and practices multiple target therapies.
