A review of biomolecules conjugated lanthanide up-conversion nanoparticles-based fluorescence probes in food safety and quality monitoring applications

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are known to possess unique characteristics, which allow them to overcome a number of issues that plague traditional fluorescence probes. UCNPs have been employed in a variety of applications, but it is arguably in the realm of optical sensors where they have shown the most promise. Biomolecule conjugated UCNPs-based fluorescence probes have been developed to detect and quantify a wide range of analytes, from metal ions to biomolecules, with great specificity and sensitivity. In this review, we have given much emphasis on the recent trends and progress in the preparation strategies of bioconjugated UCNPs and their potential application as fluorescence sensors in the trace level detection of food industry-based toxicants and adulterants. The paper discusses the preparation and functionalisation strategies of commonly used biomolecules over the surface of UCNPs. The use of different sensing strategies namely heterogenous and homogenous assays, underlying fluorescence mechanisms in the detection process of food adulterants are summarized in detail. This review might set a precedent for future multidisciplinary research including the development of novel biomolecules conjugated UCNPs for potential applications in food science and technology.

Plasmonic nanoparticle's anti-aggregation application in sensor development for water and wastewater analysis

Colorimetric sensors have emerged as a powerful tool in the detection of water pollutants. Plasmonic nanoparticles use localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based colorimetric sensing. LSPR-based sensing can be accomplished through different strategies such as etching, growth, aggregation, and anti-aggregation. Based on these strategies, various sensors have been developed. This review focuses on the newly developed anti-aggregation-based strategy of plasmonic nanoparticles. Sensors based on this strategy have attracted increasing interest because of their exciting properties of high sensitivity, selectivity, and applicability. This review highlights LSPR-based anti-aggregation sensors, their classification, and role of plasmonic nanoparticles in these sensors for the detection of water pollutants. The anti-aggregation based sensing of major water pollutants such as heavy metal ions, anions, and small organic molecules has been summarized herein. This review also provides some personal insights into current challenges associated with anti-aggregation strategy of LSPR-based colorimetric sensors and proposes future research directions.

Adsorption of nitrate and nitrite anion by modified maize stalks from aqueous solutions

The newly developed aminated maize stalk (AMS) was prepared by a chemical process using charred maize stalk (CMS). The AMS was used for the removal of nitrate and nitrite ions from aqueous media. The effects of initial anion concentration, contact time, and pH were studied by the batch method. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM , and elemental analysis. The concentration of the nitrate and nitrite solution before and after was determined with the help of a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 294.11 mg/g for nitrate and 232.55 mg/g for nitrite, respectively, at pH 5 for both ions attaining equilibrium within 60 min. The BET surface area of AMS was found to be 25.3 m²/g with a pore volume of 0.02cc/g. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model fit well, and the adsorption data supported the Langmuir isotherm. The findings revealed that AMS has a high capability for removing nitrate (NO₃^-) and nitrite (NO₂^-) ions from their aqueous solutions.

Gis-Based Assessment of Risk for Drinking Water Contamination to Children’s Health in Rural Settlements

Nitrates and heavy metals are two of the most significant groundwater pollutants that have an impact on people’s health all around the world. In order to assess their risk to children’s health, this study aims to determine the total iron, manganese, and nitrate content in drinking water sources of non-centralized water supply of the educational institutions in the rural settlements of Zhytomyr region. A total of 114 water samples from wells and bores used by the educational institutions to supply domestic and drinking water to rural residential areas were collected. The Measurement Laboratory of Polissia National University conducted analytical studies. The danger to children’s health was evaluated using the hazard quotient and following the methodology recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The software ArcGIS Pro was used to identify risk zones.

The average total iron content in the drinking water of the Berdichev, Zhytomyr, and Novohrad-Volinsky districts was 1.5–2.8 times higher. In all regions, the average manganese concentration did not go above the allowable level. On average, the nitrate content was also below the threshold, but in 22.6–42.9% of the samples, it exceeded the allowable level. Children aged 6–12 years were at the highest risk, and children living in Berdichev district had the highest hazard quotient at 1.972. The fact that nitrates accounted for 67–84% of the total risk indicates the danger associated with the intake of nitrates, even in amounts below the allowable concentration.

Evaluation of occurrence of organic, inorganic, and microbial contaminants in bottled drinking water and comparison with international guidelines: a worldwide review

The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of inorganic and organic substances as well as microbial contaminants in bottled drinking water on a global scale. The findings were compared to WHO guidelines, EPA standards, European Union (EU) directive, and standards drafted by International Bottled Water Association (IBWA). Our review showed that 46% of studies focused on the organic contaminants, 25% on physicochemical parameters, 12% on trace elements, 7% on the microbial quality, and 10% on microplastics (MPs) and radionuclides elements. Overall, from the 54 studies focusing on organic contaminants (OCs) compounds, 11% of studies had higher OCs concentrations than the standard permissible limit. According to the obtained results from this review, several OCs, inorganic contaminants (IOCs), including CHCl3, CHBrCl2, DEHP, benzene, styrene, Ba, As, Hg, pb, Ag, F, NO3, and SO4 in bottled drinking water of some countries were higher than the international guidelines values that may cause risks for human health in a long period of time. Furthermore, some problematic contaminants with known or unknown health effects such as EDCs, DBP, AA, MPs, and some radionuclides (40K and 222Rn) lack maximum permissible values in bottled drinking water as stipulated by international guidelines. The risk index (HI) for OCs and IOCs (CHBrCl2, Ba, As, and Hg) was higher than 1 in adults and children, and the value of HI for CHCl3 in children was more than 1. Thus, further studies are required to have a better understanding of all contaminants levels in bottled drinking water.

Reactive nitrogen compounds and their influence on human health: an overview

Nitrogen (N) is a critical component of food security, economy and planetary health. Human production of reactive nitrogen (Nr) via Haber-Bosch process and cultivation-induced biological N₂ fixation (BNF) has doubled global N cycling over the last century. The most important beneficial effect of Nr is augmenting global food supplies due to increased crop yields. However, increased circulation of Nr in the environment is responsible for serious human health effects such as methemoglobinemia ("blue baby syndrome") and eutrophication of coastal and inland waters. Furthermore, ammonia (NH₃) emission mainly from farming and animal husbandary impacts not only human health causing chronic lung disease, inflammation of human airways and irritation of eyes, sinuses and skin but is also involved in the formation of secondary particulate matter (PM) that plays a critical role in environment and human health. Nr also affects human health via global warming, depletion of stratospheric ozone layer resulting in greater intensity of ultra violet B rays (UVB) on the Earth's surface, and creation of ground-level ozone (through reaction of NO₂ with O₂). The consequential indirect human health effects of Nr include the spread of vector-borne pathogens, increased incidence of skin cancer, development of cataracts, and serious respiratory diseases, besides land degradation. Evidently, the strategies to reduce Nr and mitigate adverse environmental and human health impacts include plugging pathways of nitrogen transport and loss through runoff, leaching and emissions of NH₃, nitrogen oxides (NO _x ), and other N compounds; improving fertilizer N use efficiency; reducing regional disparity in access to N fertilizers; enhancing BNF to decrease dependence on chemical fertilizers; replacing animal-based proteins with plant-based proteins; adopting improved methods of livestock raising and manure management; reducing air pollution and secondary PM formation; and subjecting industrial and vehicular NO _x emission to pollution control laws. Strategic implementation of all these presents a major challenge across the fields of agriculture, ecology and public health. Recent observations on the reduction of air pollution in the COVID-19 lockdown period in several world regions provide an insight into the achievability of long-term air quality improvement. In this review, we focus on complex relationships between Nr and human health, highlighting a wide range of beneficial and detrimental effects.

Revised Iranian Water Quality Index (RIWQI): a tool for the assessment and management of water quality in Iran

Water quality indices use biological, chemical, and physical data and information to classify the condition of surface waters, ultimately contributing to their management. We used multicollinearity and principal components analyses to develop the Revised Iranian Water Quality Index (RIWQI) as an indicator of agricultural and urban effects in the Karun River Basin of southwestern Iran. Seasonal sampling and analysis of water quality parameters from 54 sites across 18 rivers of the Karun River Basin include fecal coliform, total dissolved solid, phosphate, biological and chemical oxygen demand, nitrate, dissolved oxygen saturation, turbidity, pH, and water temperature. This study updates the previous version of Iranian Water Quality Index (IWQI) by differentially weighting individual variables, refining the main sub-indices, adding phosphate (PO₄^-), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and temperature (T), and improving the aggregation calculation. Sensitivity testing of the RIWQI resulted in a mean value for discrimination efficiency (DE) > 85.6%, the highest of other indices calculated with the same dataset.

Facile Synthesis of Hydrogel-Based Ion-Exchange Resins for Nitrite/Nitrate Removal and Studies of Adsorption Behavior

This research aimed to create facile, reusable, hydrogel-based anion exchange resins that have been modified with two different amines to test their ability to adsorb nitrate and nitrite in water using batch and continuous systems. In the batch experiment, maximum adsorption capacities of nitrate and nitrite onto poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (PEGDA-MTAC) and poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate 2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride (PEGDA-AMHC) adsorbents can be obtained as 13.51 and 13.16 mg NO₃⁻-N/g sorbent; and 12.36 and 10.99 mg NO₂⁻-N/g sorbent respectively through the Langmuir isotherm model. After 15 adsorption/desorption cycles, PEGDA-MTAC and PEGDA-AMHC retained nitrate adsorption efficiencies of 94.71% and 83.02% and nitrite adsorption efficiencies of 97.38% and 81.15% respectively. In a column experiment, modified adsorbents demonstrated adsorption efficiencies greater than 45% after being recycled five times. Proposed hydrogel-based adsorbents can be more effective than several types of carbon-based sorbents for nitrate and nitrite removal in water and have benefits such as reduced waste generation, cost-effectiveness, and a facile synthesis method.

Monolithic Integrated OLED–OPD Unit for Point-of-Need Nitrite Sensing

In this study, we present a highly integrated design of organic optoelectronic devices for Point-of-Need (PON) nitrite (NO2−) measurement. The spectrophotometric investigation of nitrite concentration was performed utilizing the popular Griess reagent and a reflection-based photometric unit with an organic light emitting diode (OLED) and an organic photodetector (OPD). In this approach a nitrite concentration dependent amount of azo dye is formed, which absorbs light around ~540 nm. The organic devices are designed for sensitive detection of absorption changes caused by the presence of this azo dye without the need of a spectrometer. Using a green emitting TCTA:Ir(mppy)3 OLED (peaking at ~512 nm) and a DMQA:DCV3T OPD with a maximum sensitivity around 530 nm, we successfully demonstrated the operation of the OLED–OPD pair for nitrite sensing with a low limit of detection 46 µg/L (1.0 µM) and a linearity of 99%. The hybrid integration of an OLED and an OPD with 0.5 mm × 0.5 mm device sizes and a gap of 0.9 mm is a first step towards a highly compact, low cost and highly commercially viable PON analytic platform. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a fully organic-semiconductor-based monolithic integrated platform for real-time PON photometric nitrite analysis.

A sensitive electrochemical sensor based on metal cobalt wrapped conducting polymer polypyrrole nanocone arrays for the assay of nitrite

The conducting polymer polypyrrole nanocones wrapped by metal cobalt (Co/PPy) are a promising platform for the detection of sodium nitrite, which can be obtained by an electrochemical deposition technique under a mild condition. Co/PPy nanocone arrays combined the high conductivity and large specific surface area of PPy nanocones with the redox properties of metal cobalt, and their 3D structure can provide more active sites for nitrite detection. Owing to the microstructure and excellent electrical properties of the nanocomposite, Co/PPy nanocone arrays were convenient to construct a high-performance nitrite sensor. The microscopic morphology and composition of Co/PPy nanocone arrays were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XPS, and XRD, and their electrochemical performances were also investigated. The experimental results showed that Co/PPy nanocones exhibited excellent performance for nitrite determination. The sensors were used for the determination of nitrite in pickled Chinese cabbage and water samples, and the results were consistent with those of spectrophotometry. Hence, the synthesized Co/PPy nanocone arrays have a broad application prospect in food safety, environmental protection, and industrial manufacturing.

Analysis and health risk assessment of nitrosamines in meat products collected from markets, Iran: with the approach of chemometric

The aim of study was evaluate of the concentration and health risk of nitrosamines in 150 meat products samples by using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS), with the chemometric approach. Among the identified nitrosamines, the levels of N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR), N-nitrosopiperidine (NPIP), and total nitrosamines in meat sausages samples were significantly higher than chicken sausages (p < 0.05). Principal component analysis and heat map visualization confirmed meat percentage and sausages type (meat or chicken) which had significant effects on nitrosamines content. The NPIP and NPYR intake was 1.17E-07 and 2.12E-07 mg/kg bw/day, respectively. The Monte Carlo simulation results indicated that the 95th percentile from NPIP and NPYR based on ILCR index were 9.07E-07 and 4.72E-07, respectively. In conclusion, the carcinogenic risk of nitrosamines was considerably lower than the safe risk limit (CR > 1E-4) recommended by United States Environmental Protection Agency for Iranian population.

Water intake meets the Water from inside the human body – physiological, cultural, and health perspectives - Synthetic and Systematic literature review

Background. The average adult human body of 70 kilograms consists in about 67.85% water distributed evenly to an average of 70 % in all major organs of the body: skin, muscles, brain, spinal cord, liver, heart, lungs, spleen, kidneys, pancreas and gastro-intestinal tract. A smaller percentage is found in the bones (30%), teeth (5%) and fat tissue (50%). Objective. This review article attempts to present different perspectives on the physiological properties of water in the human body. We describe from the ancient Chinese medicine theory about water being one of the 5 elements of nature and its harmonious interrelation with the other elements in order to balance the human body, to the successful experiments of researchers which demonstrated waters’ capability to change its molecular structure based on feelings, intentions and energy it was exposed to. We briefly describe the role of water for the human body and what effects can the lack of it have, especially dehydration with all the phases of severity. Also, we present the health benefits of drinking water and which type of water is best to consume. We shorty review the different types of natural mineral waters in Romania and the importance of the Romanian researches for balneology and how the waters cand be administrated in crenotherapy for different types of pathologies. Methods. To elaborate our systematic review, we have searched for relevant open access articles and review articles in ISI Web of Science, published from January 2017 until August 2021. The terms used were water AND health in the title. Articles were excluded in the second phase if they did not reach the relevance citation criterion. The eligible articles were analyzed in detail regarding water importance for human health. Results. Our search identified, first, 548 articles. After applying a PEDro like selection filter and, we selected 93 articles with a minimum of 8 points on our PEDro like filtering scale (good, very good, and excellent articles with a minimum of 5 citations per year). Detailed analysis of the 93 selected articles has conducted us to the elimination of 33 of them as being on a different subject than that of our article. To the 60 full articles retained for this systematic and synthetic article, we have added 10 articles found through a separate Google search, as being considered of high relevance for our subject and necessary to be included. Conclusions. Water is essential for the entire planet and also indispensable for the survival of the human body. Linking DPSIR Model and Water Quality Indices to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals in Groundwater Resources

The achievement of sustainable development goals in groundwater resources related to water quality issues is a critical question in many regions. This study aims to combine powerful tools for helping stakeholders and policymakers achieve sustainable development goals in groundwater resources of agricultural areas. The DPSIR (Driver–Pressure–State–Impact–Response) model in combination with the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment Water Quality Index and Groundwater Directive 2006/118/European Community—Threshold Values was applied using a hydrogeochemical dataset derived from the analysis of groundwater samples collected from 31 monitoring sites in an unconfined alluvial aquifer. Elevated Cl− (up to 423.2 mg L−1), NO3− (up to 180.1 mg L−1) concentration and electrical conductivity (up to 2037 μS cm−1) value are observed for groundwater samples of the study area. The outcome of the “One Out-All Out” procedure revealed that the groundwater in 42% of the monitored sites is unsuitable for drinking according to the health-based guideline values established by Directive 98/83/European Community. A difficulty to achieve targets under Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 6 in the study area is revealed. The proposed response actions are reported.

Selective nitrate removal from aqueous solutions by a hydrotalcite-like absorbent FeMgMn-LDH

FeMgMn-LDH, a type of potential environmental remediation material, has been synthesized via a co-precipitation method, and its adsorption characteristics for nitrate were investigated in this study. It’s shown that the prepared FeMgMn-LDH is a promising adsorbent for anions removal, which has high buffer capacity (final pH remained between 9 and 10) and high reversibility, and can remove nitrate ions selectively though an anion-sieve effect. The maximum amount of nitrate adsorption is 10.56 N-mg g⁻¹ at 25 ℃. The removal rate of nitrate ions can reach 86.26% with the adsorbent dose of 5 g/L in a real water. The competition order of coexisting anions on nitrate adsorption by FeMgMn-LDH is CO₃²⁻ > PO₄³⁻ > SO₄²⁻. The negative values of ΔG⁰ (from − 27.796 to − 26.426 kJ mol⁻¹) and ΔH⁰ (− 6.678 kJ mol⁻¹) indicate that the nitrate adsorption process on the FeMgMn-LDH is spontaneous and exothermic. The main adsorption mechanisms of nitrate removal from aqueous solutions by FeMgMn-LDH are electrostatic attraction and ion exchange.

Fully Integrated, Automated, and Smartphone Enabled Point-of-Source Portable Platform With Microfluidic Device for Nitrite Detection

Excess limit of Nitrites, which are prevalent within environmental and physiological systems, have severe detrimental effects, thus point-of-source detection becomes an important requirement to take suitable preventive measures. This paper presents the design and development of a standalone, point-of-source, portable, low-cost, automated and integrated microfluidic system for quick detection and quantification of nitrite. Based on multiphysics simulations, a disposable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic device was employed to carry out the controlled Griess reaction based assay. A low-cost 3D printed syringe pump was developed to inject the sample and reagent. Photometric detection was employed using light emitting diode (LED) and photodiode. A transimpedance amplifier circuit was designed and fabricated to achieve amplified photodiode output with reduced noise. An off-the-shelf microprocessor was used to integrate the whole system and a smartphone application (app) was developed to control the complete system and store the data. Interaction between the application and the microprocessor was achieved using Bluetooth connectivity. Spectrophotometric validation was performed and a calibration equation was obtained which was used to convert the device voltage output to absorption, through specially programmed android app. All the components were integrated in a 3D printed platform whose virtues such as ease of usage and affordability makes, quantification of nitrite, a simple and real time process wherein the limit of detection and limit of quantification values are found to be 0.07103 ppm and 0.21524 ppm respectively with good repeatability.

Salient to Whom? The Positioning of German Political Parties on Agricultural Pollutants in Water Bodies

Scholars have increasingly argued for an integration of policies on agriculture and water due to their strong interlinkage. The entry of agricultural pollutants into water represents one of the main pressures on Europe’s ground and surface waters. This not only poses a risk to the environment and human health but also jeopardizes meeting the targets set by the EU Water Framework Directive. Research on the political agenda setting has shown that issue salience is key for triggering policy change. Nevertheless, Germany has repeatedly failed to adopt adequate policy measures despite the salience of the issue among the German public and increasing pressure by the EU. In this study, I shed light on the positioning of political parties in Germany on agricultural pollutants to explain the absence of policy change. More specifically, I ask whether there is an ideological division between political parties that hampers the adoption of effective, integrated policy measures. A qualitative content analysis of election manifestos published between 1998 and 2018 finds that political parties’ policy positions are predominantly influenced by their placement on an environmental and an economic ideological dimension. As a result, political parties in Germany advocate conflictive policy approaches, which is detrimental to the adoption of effective policy measures.

Lab on a Chip for the Colorimetric Determination of Nitrite in Processed Meat Products in the Jordanian Market

Nitrite and Nitrate have been used extensively as additives in various meat products to enhance flavor, color, and to preserve the meat from the bacterial growth. High concentrations of nitrite can threat human health since several studies in the literature claim that nitrite is associated with cancer incidences, leukemia, and brain tumors. Therefore, it is vital to measure the nitrite concentrations in processed meat products. In this study, an in-lab miniaturized photometric detection system is fabricated to inspect the nitrite concentration in processed meat products in Jordan. The analytical performance of nitrite detection is evaluated based on three key statistical parameters; linearity, limit of detection, and limit of quantitation. Respectively, for the fabricated system, the three values are found to be equal to 0.995, 1.24 × 10-2 ppm, and 4.12 × 10-2 ppm. Adherence to Beer's law is found over the investigated range from 2.63 ppm to 96.0 ppm. The developed system is utilized for photometric detection of nitrite in processed meat products available in the Jordanian market like pastrami, salami, and corned beef. In all of the analyzed samples, the nitrite content is found to be lower than 150 ppm, which represents the maximum allowable nitrite limit.
