The effect of prenatal education in two ways, face-to-face and virtual, on the fear of natural childbirth in pregnant women

Aims

This study was designed and implemented to compare the effect of prenatal education on the fear of natural birth in pregnant women.

Subject and method

This research was a semi-experimental study with a control group conducted on 96 pregnant women in Mashhad. People were randomly allocated to face-to-face and virtual groups. The Wijma childbirth experience/expectation questionnaire version A and the midwifery personal information form were used as pre-test and post-test tools.

Results

In the face-to-face and virtual groups, the average scores before and after the intervention were different, which indicated a decrease in fear of Natural childbirth in pregnant women, which was statistically significant. The changes in fear of natural childbirth score were significantly different between the three groups, and these changes were higher in the face-to-face group than in the other two groups.

Conclusion

Attendance in natural childbirth preparation classes in face-to-face and virtual training methods positively affects the fear of natural childbirth. Therefore, encouraging and supporting women to participate in training courses increase the women's desire for natural childbirth.

Associations of Musical Activities and Positive Affect With Fear of Childbirth: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach

Background

Fear of childbirth is a prevalent issue among women, with a wide range of interventions to dispel it. Here we explored a novel and beneficial intervention and one possible influence mechanism of it.

Methods

The cross-sectional study recruited 1,053 pregnant women from one tertiary-grade A class hospital between March to August 2021. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics, a self-made musical activities questionnaire, the Positive affect subscale, and the Childbirth Attitudes Questionnaire. We parceled the eight musical activities into three items by item parceling methodology. The associations of musical activities and positive affect with fear of childbirth were evaluated by a structural equation modeling approach.

Results

Our analyses demonstrated the effectiveness of musical activities, which was notably correlated with the increase in positive affect (β = 0.309, P < 0.01). On the contrary, positive affect predicted a decrease in fear of childbirth (β = −0.085, P = 0.019). Additionally, positive affect mediated the effect of musical activities on fear of childbirth (β = −0.026, P = 0.030). However, the direct effect of musical activities on fear of childbirth was not found (β = 0.029, P = 0.514).

Conclusions

Relying on musical activities alone may not be adequate to alleviate the fear of childbirth, and positive affect played a pivotal role between musical activities and fear of childbirth. The results showed that musical activities would be an effective non-pharmaceutical way to alleviate the fear of childbirth and positive affect can not be ignorant in future childbirth fear reduction programs.

Relationship between Primigravid women’s awareness, attitude, fear of childbirth, and mode of delivery preference

Introduction

Fear of childbirth is the main factor, which has decreased the tendency toward selecting natural birth. The immoderate increase in the number of C-sections has increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The present study investigates the relationship between awareness, attitude, fear of childbirth, and mode of delivery preference in Primigravid women referring to healthcare centers in Khorramabad, Iran.

Method

In this descriptive-analytic study, 179 nulliparous pregnant women with the gestational age of> 2,0 weeks who visited selected healthcare centers in Khorramabad for routine pregnancy care in 2020 were selected in two stages and studied. The data were collected via the childbirth attitude questionnaire (CAQ), awareness, attitude, demographic characteristics, current pregnancy characteristics, midwifery history, and history of infertility treatment questionnaires. The data were analyzed via the Chi-squared test.

Results

The participants had a mean gestational age of 33.73 ± 4.71 weeks. There was a significant different between the level of awareness, and mode of delivery preference (p = 0.005). The majority of the participants (57.5%) had a moderate level of awareness about the mode of delivery. There was a significant different between the level of, attitude, and mode of delivery preference (p = 0.001).) Most of the participants (71.5%) had a negative attitude towards the mode of delivery. There was also a significant different between fear of childbirth and mode of delivery preference (p < 0.001), and most of the participants (71.5%) showed fear of childbirth.

Conclusion

According to the results of this study, the majority of participants had afraid of childbirth, moderate awareness of mode of delivery, and negative attitudes. So, the healthcare providers should pay special attention to the fear of childbirth and the relevant factors during pregnancy.

The effect of face-to-face and virtual prenatal care training of spouses on the pregnancy experience and fear of childbirth of primiparous women: A controlled quasi-experimental study

INTRODUCTION

The spouse has a special role in promoting the health of mothers and infants during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Women's health during pregnancy requires the participation and cooperation of their spouses. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of face-to-face and virtual prenatal care training of spouses on the pregnancy experience and fear of childbirth of primiparous women.

METHODS

This is a quasi-experimental clinical trial that was conducted on primiparous pregnant women referring to three prenatal clinics in Tehran, Iran. Sampling was done by available method and pregnant women were divided into three groups of face-to-face training (n = 35), virtual training (n = 35), and control (n = 33). The content of training program in the virtual and face-to-face groups was similar and included; nutrition during pregnancy, emotional support, fetal growth and development, advantages and disadvantages of vaginal delivery, planning for delivery, infant care, and danger signs for infants, which were presented in four sessions. The samples in the control group did not receive any training. In the 18th and 20th weeks of pregnancy, the demographic information form, pregnancy experience scale, and version A of the Wijma delivery expectancy/experience questionnaires were completed, and once again in the 37th and 38th weeks of pregnancy, the pregnancy experience scale and version A of the Wijma delivery expectancy/experience questionnaires were completed.

RESULTS

There was a statistically significant difference in the mean score of pregnancy experience after the intervention between the face-to-face training and control groups (p = 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference in the mean score of uplifts between the two groups of face-to-face training and control (p = 0.01), and also between virtual training and control groups (p = 0.02). There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups of face-to-face training and control in terms of and hassles score after the intervention (p = 0.04). There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups of face-to-face training and control (p = 0.02) and also between virtual training and control (p = 0.04) in terms of the mean score of fear of childbirth after the intervention.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study showed that teaching prenatal care to spouses of primiparous women by face-to-face and virtual methods can be a useful intervention in improving the pregnancy experience and reducing the fear of childbirth among primiparous women.

Sexual and Life Satisfaction of Pregnant Women

The awareness of one's own sexuality and its expression depend on the stage of an individual's life. Pregnancy is a period of many, also psychosexual, changes. The sexual needs of pregnant women are rarely discussed, and intercourse during this period seems to be a taboo. The aim of this study was to assess the sexual and life satisfaction of pregnant women. The study involved 181 pregnant women and was conducted from July to November 2018. The participants were patients of the pregnancy pathology ward, Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 2 in Szczecin, and participants of antenatal classes. The research project was approved by the Bioethics Committee of the Pomeranian Medical University, Szczecin (KB-0012/74/18). This survey-based study was performed using the self-developed questionnaire and standardized tools: the Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS Statistics 24.0 statistical package. The tests used were the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the Shapiro-Wilk test, and Pearson's test. The statistical significance of the results was assumed as (p < 0.05), the correlations (p < 0.01), and probability (p < 0.001). This study demonstrated a high level of life satisfaction, a medium level of overall sexual satisfaction, and a high level of satisfaction with sex. A higher level of satisfaction with life was associated with higher levels of sexual satisfaction in every dimension. There is a need for comprehensive perinatal care and professional sexual counseling.

Efficacy of companion-integrated childbirth preparation for childbirth fear, self-efficacy, and maternal support in primigravid women in Malawi

Background

In resource-limited settings, childbirth remains a matter of life and death. High levels of childbirth fear in primigravid women are inevitable. To date, few studies have explored interventions to reduce childbirth fear in primigravid women. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of companion-integrated childbirth preparation (C-ICP) during late pregnancy for reducing childbirth fear and improving childbirth self-efficacy, birth companion support, and other selected pregnancy outcomes in primigravid women.

Methods

A quasi-experimental study was carried out using a non-equivalent control group design to recruit a sample of 70 primigravid women in hospital maternity waiting homes in the intervention and control groups, with 35 in each group. The primigravid women and their birth companions in the intervention group received two sessions of companion-integrated childbirth preparation, whereas the control group received routine care. A questionnaire that incorporated the childbirth attitude questionnaire (CAQ), the childbirth self-efficacy inventory (CBSEI), the birth companion support questionnaire (BCSQ), and a review checklist of selected pregnancy outcomes was used to collect data. Pretest and post-test data were analyzed using simple linear regression. Beta coefficients were adjusted at a 95% confidence interval with statistical significance set at a P-value of < 0.05 using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 25.

Results

At pretest, mean scores were similar in the intervention and control groups. At post-test, being in the intervention group significantly decreased childbirth fears (β: = − .866, t (68) = − 14.27, p < .001) and significantly increased childbirth self-efficacy (β: = .903, t (68) = 17.30, p < .001). In addition, being in the intervention group significantly increased birth companion support (β: = − 0.781, t (68) = 10.32, p < .001). However, no statistically significant differences regarding pregnancy outcomes were observed between the study groups (Mann–Whiney U test, p > .05).

Conclusion

The findings of our study suggest that C-ICP is a promising intervention to reduce childbirth fear while increasing childbirth self-efficacy and maternal support. We recommend the inclusion of C-ICP for primigravid women during late pregnancy in resource-limited settings.

Evaluation of the relationship between sexual functions and depressive symptoms among pregnant patients during the second trimester

PURPOSE

Pregnancy is a process during which anatomical, physiological, and emotional changes occur. During this process, the sex lives of couples can be affected. Possible depressive symptoms and female sexual dysfunction can affect the relationship between partners, pregnancy-delivery process, and as a result, the newborn. The objective in the present study was to evaluate the relationship of female sexuality during pregnancy with sociodemographic parameters and depressive symptoms.

METHODS

150 pregnant women during the second trimester of their pregnancy and age-matched 150 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Sociodemographic data were recorded. "Female Sexual Function Index" (FSFI) was used to evaluate sexual functions and "Beck Depression Inventory" (BDI) was used to evaluate depressive symptoms. The data were analysed using SPSS 23 statistical software. The results were interpreted with "Independent Samples t Test", Spearman's Rho correlation coefficient, Mann-Whitney U analysis and Chi-square test, and a p value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

It was detected that FSFI score of the pregnant group was lower compared to that of the non-pregnant group (16.953 ± 8.24; p = 0.000). There was no difference between the groups in terms of BDI scores (p = 0.100). There was no relationship between the FSFI score and the BDI score in the pregnant group (r = - 0.087; p = 0.144).

CONCLUSION

It was found that female sexual dysfunction occurs in pregnant women, depressive symptoms remained unchanged when compared to non-pregnant women and sexual functions remain unaffected.

Women's reproductive health needs assessment questionnaire: development and validation

BACKGROUND

Assessment of reproductive health (RH) needs is necessary for describing the status of women's RH and identification of the actions needed. This study aimed to develop and validate a questionnaire for the assessment of the women's RH needs.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A sequential exploratory mixed method study (qualitative and quantitative) was conducted with Iranian women of reproductive age (age 15-49 years) living in Rasht. The qualitative exploratory phase was used to explain the concept and dimensions of RH needs. The qualitative exploratory phase was used to develop and validate a questionnaire.

RESULTS

The results of the qualitative section, RH needs consists of two themes "Reproductive Health Education Needs" and "Reproductive Health Services Features". A Women's Reproductive Health Needs Assessment Questionnaire (WRHNAQ) was designed with 19 items. The content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI) of the questionnaire were 0.89 and 0.93, respectively. The instrument's internal consistency was confirmed by an alpha coefficient of 0.881.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study showed that the WRHNAQ is a culturally sensitive, valid and reliable scale for assessing the RH needs. The WRHNAQ will be helpful for identifying needs and need-based intervention.
