The Association Between Physical Activity and Cognitive Function With Considerations by Social Risk Status

Association between grip strength and cognitive impairment in older American adults

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Exponential population aging has led to an increased prevalence of cognitive impairment worldwide. Hand grip strength, which may be associated with physical activity, could be a useful predictor of cognitive impairment. However, few studies have reported the association, if any, between hand grip strength and cognitive function.

METHODS

We used data obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 to investigate the association between hand grip strength and cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment was assessed using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD), animal fluency (AF), and digit symbol substitution test (DSST) scores. Cutoff values of CERAD < 5, AF < 14, and DSST < 34 were used to define cognitive impairment. In this cross-sectional study, we used odds ratios to determine the potential usefulness of hand grip strength for the prediction of cognitive impairment.

RESULTS

This study included 2,623 participants aged ≥60 years. The DSST results showed that hand grip strength was associated with a low risk of cognitive impairment and that subgroup analysis showed that male sex, 60-69 years of age, and the Non-Hispanic (NH)-White, NH Black, and Asian were associated with a significantly low risk of cognitive impairment. The CERAD test results showed that 70-79 years of age and the NH White were significantly associated with a low risk of cognitive impairment. By following full adjustment, we did not observe statistically significant differences between hand grip strength and cognitive impairment based on the CERAD test. The AF test results showed that >80 years of age, female sex, and the NH White were associated with a significantly low risk of cognitive impairment. The most important finding is that a linear association lies between grip strength and cognitive impairment, as well as a sex-based linear association. Machine learning of the XGBoost model suggests that grip strength is one of the top two most important negative predictor variables.

CONCLUSION

We observed an inverse relationship between hand grip strength and cognitive impairment, which might suggest a shared underlying mechanism that needs to be further investigated using a large-scale prospective clinical trial to validate our findings.

Physical activity moderates the association between executive function and functional connectivity in older adults

Recent evidence suggests that physical activity may influence the functional connectivity of the aging brain. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of physical activity on the association between executive function and functional connectivity of key brain networks and graph theory metrics in community-dwelling older adults. Participants were 47 older adults (M = 73 years; SD = 5.92) who participated in neuropsychological testing, physical activity measurements, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Seed-to-voxel moderation analyses and graph theory analyses were conducted. Physical activity was significantly positively associated with default mode network functional connectivity (DMN FC; Posterior Cingulate Gyrus, p-FDR = 0.005; Frontal Pole (L), p-FDR = 0.005; Posterior Cingulate Gyrus, p-FDR = 0.006; Superior Frontal Gyrus (L), p-FDR = 0.016) and dorsal attention network functional connectivity (DAN FC; Inferior Frontal Gyrus Pars Opercularis (R), p-FDR = 0.044). The interaction between physical activity and executive function on the DMN FC and DAN FC was analyzed. The interaction between executive function and physical activity was significantly associated with DMN FC. When this significant interaction was probed, the association between physical activity and DMN FC differed between levels of high and low executive function such that the association was only significant at levels of high executive function. These results suggest that greater physical activity in later life is associated with greater DMN and DAN FC and provides evidence for the importance of physical activity in cognitively healthy older adults.

The Mediating Effect of Physical Function Decline on the Association Between Social Activity and Cognitive Function in Middle and Older Korean Adults: Analyzing Ten Years of Data Through Multivariate Latent Growth Modeling

Purpose

This study aimed to examine the long-term association between social activity, physical function decline and cognitive function, as well as verify the long-term mediating effect of physical function decline on the relationship between social activity and cognitive function.

Methods

Data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) that was collected over 10 years was analyzed. The sample included 10,240 adults aged 45–93 years (Mean age = 61.66 [SD = 11.061]). Multivariate latent growth modeling (LGM) was applied to verify the long-term effect of social activity and physical function on cognitive function.

Results

The results revealed that social activity had a positive impact on cognitive function and negative impact on physical function decline after controlling for age and education level. Additionally, physical function decline negatively influenced cognitive function. Finally, social activity indirectly affected cognitive function through physical function decline.

Conclusion

The contribution of this study was to test the long-term effect social activity on physical and cognitive function.

Intrinsic Connectivity Changes Mediate the Beneficial Effect of Cardiovascular Exercise on Sustained Visual Attention

Cardiovascular exercise (CE) is an evidence-based healthy lifestyle strategy. Yet, little is known about its effects on brain and cognition in young adults. Furthermore, evidence supporting a causal path linking CE to human cognitive performance via neuroplasticity is currently lacking. To understand the brain networks that mediate the CE-cognition relationship, we conducted a longitudinal, controlled trial with healthy human participants to compare the effects of a 2-week CE intervention against a non-CE control group on cognitive performance. Concomitantly, we used structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural mechanisms mediating between CE and cognition. On the behavioral level, we found that CE improved sustained attention, but not processing speed or short-term memory. Using graph theoretical measures and statistical mediation analysis, we found that a localized increase in eigenvector centrality in the left middle frontal gyrus, probably reflecting changes within an attention-related network, conveyed the effect of CE on cognition. Finally, we found CE-induced changes in white matter microstructure that correlated with intrinsic connectivity changes (intermodal correlation). These results suggest that CE is a promising intervention strategy to improve sustained attention via brain plasticity in young, healthy adults.

A Randomized Controlled Trial on the Effects of Aerobic and Coordinative Training on Neural Correlates of Inhibitory Control in Children

Whereas aerobic training has found to be beneficial for inhibitory control, less is known on the efficiency of other exercise types in children. The present study compared the effects of aerobic and coordinative training on behavioral and neurophysiological measures of inhibitory control. Forty-five children were randomly assigned (1:1:1 ratio) to groups performing aerobic training, coordinative training or assisted homework sessions over 10 weeks. Before and after intervention, all participants completed a Flanker task. The P300 component of event-related potentials elicited from the task was recorded via electroencephalography. Additionally, aerobic fitness and gross-motor skills were assessed using 20 m Shuttle Run and Heidelberg Gross-Motor Test, respectively. Statistical analyses revealed no time by group interactions for the P300 component (amplitude, latency), p = 0.976, η² = 0.007, and behavioral performance (reaction time, accuracy), p = 0.570, η² = 0.045. In contrast, there was a significant group-difference in pre- to post-test changes in aerobic fitness, p = 0.008, η² = 0.246, with greater improvements following aerobic and coordinative training compared to assisted homework sessions. In conclusion, no differences regarding the efficiency of aerobic and coordinative training for the enhancement of inhibitory control were found as both exercise programs failed to elicit changes in speed and accuracy of stimulus evaluation and the allocation of attentional resources.
