Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the superiority of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) over three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT) in patients who underwent intra-arterial chemoradiotherapy for oral cancer. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed patients with locally advanced oral cancer curatively treated with intra-arterial chemoradiotherapy at a single institution between 2010 and 2021. All patients treated after May 2015 underwent IMRT. Docetaxel (12 mg/m2/week) and nedaplatin (5 mg/m2/day) were administered through a shallow temporal artery using a catheter. RESULTS In total, 143 patients (IMRT: 71; 3DCRT: 72) were included in this study. The 5-year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 75.7 % and 59.8 %, respectively, with no significant differences between the irradiation methods. In multivariate analysis, cervical lymph node metastasis (LNM) was the only significant poor prognostic factor contributing to OS, PFS, locoregional control (LRC), and local control (LC). In multivariate subgroup analysis of LNM cases (n = 90), IMRT contributed to favorable LRC (hazard ratio [HR]=0.4, P = 0.01) and LC (HR=0.4, P = 0.006). There was no difference in the incidence of grade ≥2 osteonecrosis of the jaw (4.2 % vs. 12.5 %, P = 0.13), xerostomia (75 % vs. 82 %, P = 0.316), or dysgeusia (80 % vs. 82 %, P = 0.834) between the IMRT and 3DCRT groups. However, the rates of xerostomia at 6 months and dysgeusia at 3 months were lower in the IMRT group (both P < 0.001). CONCLUSION IMRT neither improved patient survival nor significantly reduced the incidence of osteonecrosis of the jaw. However, it demonstrated favorable LRC and LC in patients with LNM, suggesting an advantage in early recovery from xerostomia and dysgeusia.

Abstract
This study analysed the incidence of lower extremity amputation and its associated risk factors in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. This study systematically searched both Chinese and English databases, including CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science, to identify cohort studies related to lower extremity amputation and associated risk factors in patients with diabetic foot ulcers up to October 2023. The patients were stratified based on whether they underwent lower extremity amputation, and relevant data, including basic information, patient characteristics, complications, comorbidities and pertinent laboratory test data, were extracted from the included studies. The literature quality assessment in this study utilized the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale to screen for high-quality literature, resulting in the inclusion of 16 cohort studies, all of which were of at least moderate quality. Meta-analysis of outcome indicators was conducted using the Stata 14.0 software. The results indicate that the overall amputation rate of lower extremities in patients with diabetic foot ulcers is 31% (0.25, 0.38). Among the 16 variables evaluated, gender (male), smoking history, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, white blood cell count, haemoglobin and albumin levels were found to be correlated with the occurrence of lower extremity amputation in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. However, no significant correlation was observed between age, diabetes type, duration of diabetes, stroke, glycosylated haemoglobin, creatinine and total cholesterol levels and lower extremity amputation in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. This meta-analysis indicates that the overall amputation rate in patients with diabetic foot ulcers is 31%. Factors such as gender (male), smoking history, high BMI, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, white blood cell count, haemoglobin and albumin levels are identified as significant risk factors for lower extremity amputation in diabetic foot ulcer patients. These findings suggest that attention should be focused on these risk factors in patients with diabetic foot ulcers to reduce the risk of lower extremity amputation. Therefore, preventive and intervention measures targeting these risk factors are of significant importance in clinical practice. Abstract
BACKGROUND Superselective cisplatin (CDDP) infusion via the external carotid artery system and concomitant radiotherapy (RADPLAT) provides favorable oncological and functional outcomes in patients with maxillary sinus cancer. However, targeted lesions are occasionally fed by the branch of the internal carotid artery. METHODS In RADPLAT for maxillary sinus cancer partly fed by the ophthalmic artery, the ethmoid arteries were ligated in two patients without medial orbital wall involvement. In four patients with that, CDDP was administered via the ophthalmic artery. RESULTS A complete response was obtained in all six patients. Locoregional recurrence was not observed in any cases. However, visual acuity was lost in four patients who received the ophthalmic artery infusion. CONCLUSIONS Ligation of the ethmoid arteries is recommended in RADPLAT for maxillary sinus cancer with lesions fed by the ophthalmic artery. CDDP administered via the ophthalmic artery may be considered if a patient accepts the possibility of visual loss.

Abstract
Natural killer (NK) cell therapy is an emerging tool for cancer immunotherapy. NK cells are isolated from peripheral blood, and their number and activity are limited. Therefore, primary NK cells should be expanded substantially, and their proliferation and cytotoxicity must be enhanced. Shuterin is a phytochemical isolated from Ficus thonningii. In this study, we explored the possible capacity of shuterin to enhance the proliferation and activity of KHYG-1 cells (an NK leukemia cell line). Shuterin enhanced the proliferation of KHYG-1 cells and their cytotoxicity to K562 cells. Moreover, this phytochemical induced the expression of granzyme B by promoting the phosphorylated cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein (CREB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways. Furthermore, the secretion of interferon (IFN)-γ increased with increasing levels of shuterin in KHYG-1 cells and NK cells obtained from adults with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Shuterin appeared to induce IFN-γ secretion by increasing the expression of lectin-like transcript 1 and the phosphorylation of proteins involved in the Ras/Raf pathway. Thus, shuterin represents a promising agent for promoting the proliferation and cytotoxicity of NK cells.

7-Epitaxol Induces Apoptosis and Autophagy in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma through Inhibition of the ERK Pathway. Cells 2021; 10:cells10102633. Abstract
As the main derivative of paclitaxel, 7-Epitaxol is known to a have higher stability and cytotoxicity. However, the anticancer effect of 7-Epitaxol is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the anticancer effects of 7-Epitaxol in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC). Our study findings revealed that 7-Epitaxol potently suppressed cell viability in SCC-9 and SCC-47 cells by inducing cell cycle arrest. Flow cytometry and DAPI staining demonstrated that 7-Epitaxol treatment induced cell death, mitochondrial membrane potential and chromatin condensation in OSCC cell lines. The compound regulated the proteins of extrinsic and intrinsic pathways at the highest concentration, and also increased the activation of caspases 3, 8, 9, and PARP in OSCC cell lines. Interestingly, a 7-Epitaxol-mediated induction of LC3-I/II expression and suppression of p62 expression were observed in OSCC cells lines. Furthermore, the MAPK inhibitors indicated that 7-Epitaxol induces apoptosis and autophagy marker proteins (cleaved-PARP and LC3-I/II) by reducing the phosphorylation of ERK1/2. In conclusion, these findings indicate the involvement of 7-Epitaxol in inducing apoptosis and autophagy through ERK1/2 signaling pathway, which identify 7-Epitaxol as a potent cytotoxic agent in HNSCC.

Abstract
Background Retrospectively to evaluate the influence of radiochemotherapy (RCT) in the treatment of surgically and non-surgically treated Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC).
Material and Methods We analysed 934 patients treated in Hospital Haroldo Juaçaba (2000-2014; 15 years of study) by extraction of data type of cancer, localization of tumour, sex, age, race, education level, risk factors (smoking and alcohol use), year of diagnosis, TNM stage, therapeutic approach, health system used (public or private) and overall survival (OS). Surgically and non-surgically treated OSCC were compared by chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests, and their prognostic factors were analysed by log-rank Mantel-Cox plus Cox regression tests (SPSS 20.0, p<0.05).
Results Non-surgically treated OSCC patients had a lower OS than surgically treated OSCC patients (p<0.001), but an increase in OS was shown in both groups. Although the 2010-2014 period (p=0.003), education level (p=0.032), tongue/mouth floor/palate localization (p=0.023) and TNM stage (p<0.05) were important in non-surgically treated OSCC OS, the major prognostic factors were node metastasis (p=0.003) and non-use of RCT (p=0.039) (multivariate analysis). In surgically treated OSCC patients, higher OS was shown in the 2010-2014 period (p<0.001), females (p=0.012), non-drinkers (p=0.011), non-smokers (p=0.009) and those with lower TNM stage (p<0.05), but the major prognostic factor was the 2010-2014 period (p=0.004) (multivariate analysis), which was directly associated with an increase in RCT indication (p<0.001).
Conclusions The increase in RCT improved the OS in this large cohort of surgically and non-surgically treated OSCC patients. Key words:Mouth neoplasms, neck, radiotherapy, drug therapy, combination.
