Emotional and behavioral difficulties in children growing up homeless in Paris. Results of the ENFAMS survey

PURPOSE

Children growing up in homeless families are disproportionately more likely to experience health and psychological problems. Our objective was to describe social, environmental, individual and family characteristics associated with emotional and behavioral difficulties among homeless children living in the Paris region.

METHODS

Face-to-face interviews with a representative sample of homeless families were conducted by bilingual psychologists and interviewers between January and May 2013 (n=343 children ages 4-13 years). Mothers reported children's emotional and behavioral difficulties (Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire [SDQ]), family socio-demographic characteristics, residential mobility, and parents' and children's physical and mental health. Children were interviewed regarding their perception of their living arrangements, friendships and school experiences. We studied children's SDQ total score in a linear regression framework.

RESULTS

Homeless children had higher SDQ total scores than children in the general population of France, (mean total score=11.3 vs 8.9, P<0,001). In multivariate analyses, children's difficulties were associated with parents' region of birth (beta=1.74 for Sub-Saharan Africa, beta=0.60 for Eastern Europe, beta=3.22 for other countries, P=0.020), residential mobility (beta=0.22, P=0.012), children's health (beta=3.49, P<0.001) and overweight (beta=2.14, P=0.007), the child's sleeping habits (beta=2.82, P=0.002), the mother's suicide risk (beta=4.13, P<0.001), the child's dislike of the family's accommodation (beta=3.59, P<0.001) and the child's experience of bullying (beta=3.21, P=0.002).

CONCLUSIONS

Children growing up homeless experience high levels of psychological difficulties which can put them at risk for poor mental health and educational outcomes long-term. Access to appropriate screening and medical care for this vulnerable yet underserved group are greatly needed.

Notion controversée et indéterminée, les compétences parentales font l’objet de l’interprétation d’une variété d’experts aux formations et aux méthodes de travail diverses. Alors que la force probante des expertises sur le comportement est mise en cause par de nombreux juristes, les tribunaux continuent systématiquement d’y avoir recours. L’absence d’examen des compétences et des méthodes de travail des experts a pour effet la formalisation d’un système de critères qui s’est mis en place au fil du temps, de manière insidieuse. Un contexte par lequel l’activité judiciaire contribue à la formalisation d'une norme de la mère normale.

Mental health and family functioning as correlates of a sedentary lifestyle among low-income women with young children

The authors in this cross-sectional study examined mental health and family environmental factors related to a sedentary lifestyle, including lack of leisure-time physical activity and high levels of television viewing, among low-income mothers/female guardians of preschool-aged children. A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 131 mothers in 2010. Primary outcome measures included television viewing time (minutes/day) and leisure-time physical activity (<150 versus ≥150 minutes per week). Independent variables included depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and family functioning. Demographic factors (age, marriage, work status, education, number of children in the household, and race/ethnicity) were examined as potential covariates. Participating women watched television on average 186.1 minutes/day (i.e., >3 hours). Additionally, 36% of women engaged in less than the recommended 150-minute leisure-time physical activity per week. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that greater depressive symptoms (B = 76.4, p < 0.01) and lower family functioning (B = 33.0, p < 0.05) were independently related to greater television viewing when controlling for other variables. No independent factors were identified for lack of leisure-time physical activity when controlling for other covariates. Findings suggest that health promotion efforts to promote an active lifestyle among low-income women with young children should address mental health and family functioning factors, especially depressive symptoms.

Serious psychological distress among parenting and nonparenting adults

OBJECTIVES

We compared the prevalence of serious psychological distress among parenting adults with the prevalence among nonparenting adults and the sociodemographic correlates of serious psychological distress between these 2 populations.

METHODS

We drew data from 14240 parenting adults and 19224 nonparenting adults who responded to the 2002 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. We used logistic regression procedures in our analysis.

RESULTS

An estimated 8.9% of parenting adults had serious psychological distress in the prior year compared with 12.0% of nonparenting adults of similar age. In both groups, the adjusted odds of having serious psychological distress were higher among adults who were women, younger (between the ages of 18 and 44 years), low income, or receiving Medicaid. We found some differences in the correlates of serious psychological distress between parenting adults and nonparenting adults. The odds of having serious psychological distress were lower among parenting adults after we controlled for demographic characteristics.

CONCLUSIONS

Serious psychological distress is fairly prevalent among parenting adults, and high-risk sociodemographic groups of parenting adults should be targeted to ensure access to coordination of services.
