Abstract
Gastric cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in Asia, and has a significant global incidence. However, the impact of fried food consumption on gastric cancer risk remains uncertain, mainly due to the limited number of participants in previous studies. To address this knowledge gap, we aimed to examine the association between fried food intake and gastric cancer incidence through a comprehensive meta-analysis. We conducted a thorough search across multiple databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Korean Information Service System (KISS), and Research Information Service System (RISS), to collect studies. The newly analyzed results of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) findings were added. We assessed integrated odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from the selected studies using Cochrane RevMan 5.0 for the meta-analysis. The quality of the studies included in the meta-analysis was assessed using the Study Quality Assessment Tool of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). We included 18 studies in the analysis, which compared the impact of fried food intake in gastric cancer patients (n = 5739) and healthy adults (control, n = 70,933). There was a significant positive association between gastric cancer risk and fried food intake (OR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.23-1.87, I2 = 76%, p = 0.0001). The relationship was found to be significant in both non-East Asians (OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.18-1.85, I2 = 31%, p = 0.0006) and East Asians (OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.14-2.08, I2 = 83%, p = 0.005). In conclusion, this meta-analysis supports the notion that fried food intake is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer in both non-Asians and Asians. Promoting a reduction in fried food consumption as a measure against gastric cancer risk is recommended.

Abstract
Gastric cancer (GC), one of the most common cancers around the world, is a multifactorial disease and there are many risk factors for this disease. Assessing the risk of GC is essential for choosing an appropriate healthcare strategy. There have been very few studies conducted on the development of risk assessment systems for GC. This study is aimed at providing a medical decision support system based on soft computing using fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) which will help healthcare professionals to decide on an appropriate individual healthcare strategy based on the risk level of the disease. FCMs are considered as one of the strongest artificial intelligence techniques for complex system modeling. In this system, an FCM based on Nonlinear Hebbian Learning (NHL) algorithm is used. The data used in this study are collected from the medical records of 560 patients referring to Imam Reza Hospital in Tabriz City. 27 effective features in gastric cancer were selected using the opinions of three experts. The prediction accuracy of the proposed method is 95.83%. The results show that the proposed method is more accurate than other decision-making algorithms, such as decision trees, Naïve Bayes, and ANN. From the perspective of healthcare professionals, the proposed medical decision support system is simple, comprehensive, and more effective than previous models for assessing the risk of GC and can help them to predict the risk factors for GC in the clinical setting.

Abstract
Although many studies in China have found that environmental or lifestyle factors are major contributors to the etiology of esophageal cancer, most of the patients in the above studies are in the middle and late stages, the early-stage patients account for a small proportion. To clarify the risk/protective factors contributing to early lesions, we conducted the present cross-sectional study.A total of 2925 healthy controls and 402 patients with esophageal precancerous lesions were included in our study by endoscopic examination. Information on risk/protective factors was collected by personal interview, and unconditional logistic regression was used to determine adjusted odds ratios (AORs) by the maximum-likelihood method.Smoking >20 pack-years (AOR = 1.48), duration of drinking >30 years (AOR = 1.40), alcohol consumption >100 mL/d (AOR = 1.44), gastroesophageal reflux disease (AOR = 1.75), esophagitis (AOR = 1.25), a family history of esophageal cancer (AOR = 1.92), or stomach cancer (AOR = 1.92) were significant risk factors for esophageal precancerous lesions. There was a negative correlation between abdominal obesity and early esophageal cancer and precancerous lesions (AOR = 0.75). In addition, we found that there was a synergistic effect between a family history of esophageal cancer and drinking (AOR = 3.00) and smoking (AOR = 2.90).Lifestyle risk factors, genetic factors, and upper gastrointestinal diseases are associated with the development of esophageal precancerous lesions. These results highlight the need for primary prevention to reduce the future burden of cancer and other chronic diseases in high-risk areas of rural China.

Abstract
Ubiquitin-specific proteases (USPs) play important roles in the regulation of many cancer-related biological processes. USPs copy number variation (CNVs) may affect the risk and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). We detected CNVs of USPs genes in 468 matched CRC patients and controls, estimated the associations between the USPs genes CNVs and CRC risk and prognosis and their interactions with environmental factors on CRC risk. Finally, we generated five CRC risk predictive models with different CNVs patterns combining with environmental factors (EF). We identified significant association between CYLD deletion and CRC risk (ORadj = 4.18, 95% CI: 2.03-8.62), significant association between USP9X amplification and CRC risk (ORadj = 2.30, 95% CI: 1.48-3.57), and significant association between USP11 deletion and CRC risk (ORadj = 3.49, 95% CI: 1.49-8.64). There were significant gene-environment and gene-gene interactions on CRC risk. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of EF + SIG (deletion of CYLD and USP11, amplification of USP9X) model was significantly larger than any other models (AUC = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.74-0.77). We did not identify significant associations between CNVs of the three genes and CRC prognosis. CNVs of CYLD, USP9X, and USP11 are significantly associated with the risk of CRC. Gene-gene and gene-environment interactions might also play an important role in the development of CRC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Nowadays, anti-inflammation treatment is a promising approach for preventing tumorigenesis, and human microflora is closely related to inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the gastric cardiac microbiome and identify inflammation-related microorganisms for gastric cardiac inflammation. METHODS We performed 16S rRNA sequencing on a total of 11 healthy individuals and 89 individuals with different degree of gastric cardiac inflammation. Immunohistochemistry was used for verifying candidate bacteria. Phylogenetic reconstruction of unobserved states (picrust) was used for predicting the pathways involved by cardiac microflora. RESULTS The resident phyla in normal were Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroides, and Actinobacteria, and the dominant genus in normal were Halomonas, shewanella, and Comamonas. In the progression of gastric cardiac inflammation, the diversity of cardiac microflora did not change (P > 0.05). However, the composition structure of cardiac microflora varied between healthy and inflamed tissues (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, there were 64 species parallel increased with inflammation degree, especially Helicobacter pylori, Lactobacillus spp. Additionally, inflammation-related species were detected (P < 0.05), including H. pylori, Acinetobacter ursingii, and Streptococcus agalactiae. Higher H. pylori colonization was positively related to the progression of cardiac inflammation (γ coefficient = 0.678, P < 0.001), and it also influenced the cardiac microbial community structure. Cardiac microflora also participated in DNA repair pathways and is affected by the relative abundance of H. pylori (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Cardiac microflora dysbiosis, especially the increasing of the relevant abundance of H. pylori, promotes the progression of cardiac inflammation.

Abstract
CONTEXT Since treatment options for GC are limited, the best and most effective way is to try to reduce the incidences and understanding prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE The success in prevention strategies depends on understanding etiologic mechanisms. Our goal is to identify the major nutritional risk factors for GC, and we will examine the controversial evidence. DATA SOURCES We used Pub Med, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, Elsevier, Springer, and MEDLINE databases for extracting articles. DATA EXTRACTION Human studies published in English from 1997to2018 were included. Two reviewers other than authors initially assessed abstract of 742 papers and 248papers were selected for future assessments. After full review and consideration of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we used 85 articles. RESULTS Dietary salt is a strong independent risk for GC whereas alcohol is most likely a risk only in the presence of heavy alcohol consumption. Red meat and high-fat diet increase the risk of developing GC but fresh fruits, vegetables and certain micronutrients like selenium and vitamin C are protective. CONCLUSION Some nutrients such as selenium, vitamin C, folate, iron, and zinc are involved in the etiology of GC. On the other hand; salt, fats, alcohol, red meat, and pepper were reported to be risk factors for GC. Since the GC is a heterogeneous malignancy and multiple factors are involved in its genesis.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranked 3rd for cancer incidence and 4th for cancer death worldwide. Despite the increasing number of CRC studies, the etiology is not yet clear. In this study, we investigated the effects of the dinner-to-bed time, post-dinner walk and sleep duration on the risk for CRC.We conducted a matched case-control study based on hospital population. We involved 166 patients had a newly histologically confirmed CRC without previous treatment and 166 healthy healthy residents matched by age and gender at Fujian Medical Union Hospital. A self-designed questionnaire was used to information on demographic characteristics, dinner-to-bed time, post-dinner walk, sleep duration, and other behavioral factors. Conditional logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) to assess the effect of dinner-to-bed time, post-dinner walking, and sleep duration as well as their joint effect on the risk of CRC at different genders.The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of CRC for subjects with shorter dinner-to-bed time (2.0-2.9 h) were 2.527 (95% CIs = 1.127-5.337), relative to those with longer dinner-to-bed time (≥4 h), the difference was statistically significant (P < .05). Post-dinner walk was associated with a significantly decreased CRC risk (AOR = 0.339, 95% CIs = 0.203-0.865) compared with post-dinner non-walk. Compared with 6-9 h of sleep duration, the risk OR of CRC were 3.843 (95% CIs = 2.767-7.800, P < .05) and 2.12 (95% CIs = 0.754-5.959, P > .05) for long (≥9 h) and short (<6 h) sleep duration. The risk of CRC individuals with shorter dinner-to-bed time and post-dinner non-walk caused higher risk than those with longer dinner-to-bed time and post-dinner walk (AOR = 3.361, 95% CIs = 2.043-6.316). The risk of CRC was 2.231 (95% CIs = 1.089-3.762, P < .001), with a shorter dinner-to-bed time and ≥9 hours of sleep duration.We found that shorter dinner-to-bed time (<3 h), post-dinner walk, and long sleep duration (≥9 h) were seems to be related to CRC and may increase the risk of CRC.

Abstract
Objective: Gastric cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with many influences contributing to the disease. The aim of this study was to identify the most important risk factors. Methods: This study was conducted in 2017 with a structured overview in the Science Directe, Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science (ISI) databases. In the first step, articles were extracted based on their titles and abstracts; the quality of 43 articles was evaluated using the STORBE tool. Inclusion criteria were studies carried out on human, English language (first step), year of the study and the study type (second step). Results: Finally, 1,381 articles were found, of which 1,269 were excluded in primary and secondary screening. In reviewing the references of the remaining 44 papers, 4 studies were added. Finally, 43 articles were selected for the quality assessment process. A total of 52 risk factors for gastric cancer were identified and classified into nine important categories: diet, lifestyle, genetic predisposition, family history, treatment and medical conditions, infections, demographic characteristics, occupational exposures and ionizing radiation’. Conclusion: Several environmental and genetic factors are involved in the development of gastric cancer. Regarding the role of changes in ‘diet and lifestyle’, considering appropriate nutrition and improving the level of education and awareness of people is vital for early diagnosis and timely treatment of this disease, especially in people with a family history and genetic predisposition.

Abstract
The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging scheme requires staging proximal gastric carcinoma (PGC) as esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), which has been shown to be controversial by recent research results. To update the current research findings on PGC, we systematically reviewed and analyzed the scientific evidence on key arguments related to PGC. The data of high-quality research articles showed that PGC arised in the cardiac mucosa in the proximal stomach within 3 cm below the gastroesophageal junction. Its incidence is rising in East Asian countries, but decreasing in the West, and plateaued at a low level in the United States. PGC is a slowly progressive cancer with unknown independent risk factors and the mechanisms of pathogenesis. This carcinoma exhibits a wide histopathological spectrum and heterogeneous post-resection patient survival characteristics, and cannot be adequately staged for prognotic stratification by the current AJCC staging classification. The results on PGC genomics reveal unique genetic profiles, especially in East Asian populations. In conclusion, mounting evidence defies a simple placement of PGC in a single category of EAC for disease classification; further investigations on the mechanisms of PGC pathogenesis are urgently needed.

Abstract
Gastric cancer (GC) remains a major killer throughout the world. Despite the dramatic decrease in GC over the last century, its etiology has not yet been well characterized. This study investigated the possible independent and combined effects of the dinner-to-bed time and post-dinner walk on the risk for GC across different age groups. A population-based, case-control study was conducted in southeast China, including 452 patients with GC and 465 age-, race-, and gender-matched controls. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect information on demographic characteristics, dinner-to-bed time, post-dinner walk, and other behavioral factors. Conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate the effects of the dinner-to-bed time and post-dinner walk as well as their joint effect on the risk for GC across different age groups. Individuals with dinner-to-bed time <3 hours were more prone to have GC (P < 0.001), and the shorter the dinner-to-bed time was, the higher was the risk for GC (Ptrend < 0.001). Post-dinner nonwalk was associated with a 2.9-fold increased risk for GC compared with post-dinner walk (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.942, 95% confidence intervals [95% CIs] = 2.072-4.179). The interaction effect of dinner-to-bed time and post-dinner walk on GC risk was detected (AOR = 1.862, 95% CIs = 1.584-3.885, synergy index [SI] = 2.654, 95% CIs = 2.27-3.912). Participants with dinner-to-bed time <3 hours who did not walk after dinner were 7.4 times likely to suffer from GC (AOR = 7.401, 95% CIs = 4.523-13.16) than those with dinner-to-bed time ≥4 hours who took such walk. The risk of GC due to dinner-to-bed time <3 hours, post-dinner nonwalk and their interaction was positively correlated with age. The strongest risk was observed among people ≥70 years old, but the effects were not significant for people ≤55 years old. Dinner-to-bed time <3 hours and post-dinner nonwalk are independent risk factors for GC; the synergistic interaction between the 2 factors was positively related to age, which might significantly increase the risk for GC among people >55 years old.

Abstract
As several epidemiological studies on the association of coffee consumption with gastric cancer risk have produced inconsistent results, this meta-analysis was designed to synthesize current evidence of this potential relationship. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library up to September 2014 to retrieve relevant articles. Prospective cohort studies were included if the relative risks (RRs) or hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for gastric cancer according to coffee consumption were reported. Fixed- or random-effects models were used based on heterogeneity. The search yielded 13 eligible cohort studies of 3484 incident gastric cancer patients from among 1,324,559 participants. A significantly increased risk was found between gastric cardia cancer and coffee consumption (RR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.09-2.07). Compared with Europeans (RR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.86-1.46) and Asians (RR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.72-1.27), Americans (RR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.06-1.74) demonstrated a significantly positive association. However, the significant differences of the pooled results vanished after adjusting for smoking or body mass index. Our meta-analysis results suggest that a high level of coffee consumption is a risk factor for gastric cancer. However, these results should not be overinterpreted because residual confounding effects of other factors could exist.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aims of this case-control study were to assess the correlation between some food habits in the last two decades and gastric cancer in East Azerbaijan of Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this hospital based case control study, 616 patients (212 gastric cancer patients, 404 cancer free patients) were recruited. Food habits of patients over the past two decades were assessed with a structured questionnaire. We used conditional logistic regression analysis for estimating crude and adjusted odds ratios (OR) and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). RESULTS In this study, over-eating, consumption of high fat milk and yogurt and especial types of cheese increased the risk of gastric cancer (All<0.05). Consumption of such especial cheeses such as Koze and Khiki increased the risk of gastric cancer by 12.6 fold (95% CI:1.99-79.36) and 7.36 fold (95% CI:1.33- 40.54), respectively. In addition, high fat food, moldy food, and pickled vegetables consumption as well as reuse of cooking oil for frying were significantly associated with gastric cancer risk. Furthermore, intake of Ghorme (deep fried meat) was positively correlated with gastric cancer risk (OR:1.31;95%CI: 0.91-1.87). CONCLUSIONS It can be confirmed that particular food habits which have been very common in East-Azerbaijan in the last two past decades increase risk of gastric cancer. According to our results and taking into account the long latency period of gastric cancer it can be concluded that nutrition education for a healthy diet should be performed from early childhood. However, further well designed cohort studies are needed to achieve more clear results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Several recent studies have found an independent relationship between levels of plasma branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD); however, few studies have investigated the associations of BCAAs with CAD and the risk of cardiovascular events. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between BCAAs and CAD. METHODS AND RESULTS We studied 143 patients with CAD diagnosed by coronary angiography at Beijing Hospital (Beijing, China) during 2008-2011. Apparently healthy control individuals (n = 286) and the patients with CAD were matched (2:1 ratio) by age and gender. The healthy control individuals were selected at random from a set of subjects who attended an annual physical examination at the same hospital in 2011. Conditional logistic regression models were used to evaluate the associations between measured variables and CAD. After multivariate adjustment for traditional CAD risk factors, each one-standard-deviation increase in BCAA concentration was associated with an approximately twofold increase in the risk of CAD (odds ratio = 1.63, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.21-2.20, P = 0.001). As compared with subjects in the lowest quartile of BCAA levels, the odds ratios (95% CIs) for CAD risk in subjects belonging to quartiles 2, 3, and 4 were 1.65 (0.75-3.61), 2.04 (0.92-4.53), and 3.86 (1.71-8.69), respectively (P trend = 0.01). CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that BCAAs are significantly related to CAD development. This relationship is independent of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and body mass index.

Abstract
This study aimed at summarizing epidemiological research findings on associations between tobacco, alcohol and tea consumption and risk of gastric cancer (GC) in the Chinese population. The review searched PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and China Biology Medicine (CBM) databases and reference lists of review papers for all studies published in English or Chinese languages. Information extracted, via two independent researchers, from retrieved articles included first author, year of publication, study design, sample size, source of controls and adjusted odds ratio (OR) or relative risk (RR) with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each category. Statistical analyses used software STATA version 12.0. The systematic search found 89 articles containing 25,821 GC cases and 135,298 non-cases. The overall random effects in terms of pooled OR and 95%CI for tobacco, alcohol and tea consumption were 1.62 (95%CI: 1.50-1.74), 1.57 (95%CI: 1.41-1.76) and 0.67 (95%CI: 0.59-0.76) respectively; while the heterogeneity among included studies ranged from 80.1% to 87.5%. The majority of subgroup analyses revealed consistent results with the overall analyses. All three behavioral factors showed statistically significant dose-dependent effects on GC (P<0.05). The study revealed that tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking were associated with over 1/2 added risk of GC, while tea drinking conferred about 1/3 lower risk of GC in the Chinese population. However, these results should be interpreted with caution given the fact that most of the included studies were based on a retrospective design and heterogeneity among studies was relatively high.

Abstract
The big gap between efficacy of population level prevention and expectations due to heterogeneity and complexity of cancer etiologic factors calls for selective yet personalized interventions based on effective risk assessment. This paper documents our research protocol aimed at refining and validating a two-stage and web- based cancer risk assessment tool, from a tentative one in use by an ongoing project, capable of identifying individuals at elevated risk for one or more types of the 80% leading cancers in rural China with adequate sensitivity and specificity and featuring low cost, easy application and cultural and technical sensitivity for farmers and village doctors. The protocol adopted a modified population-based case control design using 72, 000 non-patients as controls, 2, 200 cancer patients as cases, and another 600 patients as cases for external validation. Factors taken into account comprised 8 domains including diet and nutrition, risk behaviors, family history, precancerous diseases, related medical procedures, exposure to environment hazards, mood and feelings, physical activities and anthropologic and biologic factors. Modeling stresses explored various methodologies like empirical analysis, logistic regression, neuro-network analysis, decision theory and both internal and external validation using concordance statistics, predictive values, etc..

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is an important lipo-polysaccharide (LPS) receptor in gastric epithelial cell signaling transduction and plays critical roles in the development and progression of gastric cancer (GC). We investigated the effects of TLR4 gene polymorphisms and gene-environmental interactions on the risk of GC in Northeastern China. METHODS We genotyped two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TLR4 (rs10116253 and rs1927911) in 217 GC patients and 294 cancer-free controls using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by unconditional logistic-regression models. RESULTS Individuals carrying CC genotype of rs10116253 and TT genotype of rs1927911 had a significantly decreased risk of GC (adjusted OR=0.33, 95% CI 0.18-0.60, P<0.001 and adjusted OR=0.37, 95% CI 0.21-0.67, P=0.001 respectively), compared with TT genotype of rs10116253 and CC genotype of rs1927911. In addition, the SNP effects were additive to the effects of some known environmental factors without any interaction between them in the susceptibility to GC. CONCLUSION Our data suggested that TLR4 gene polymorphisms may be associated with a decreased risk of GC in Chinese population. And these SNPs and their combined effects with environmental factors may be associated with the risk of GC.
