Breast and cervical cancer knowledge and awareness among university students

A national survey to assess breast cancer awareness among the female university students of Pakistan

The incidence of breast cancer is increasing in Pakistan as well as globally. Awareness of women about breast cancer plays a cornerstone role in its early detection, better management, and prevention. Keeping this in mind, a cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the awareness of female university students about breast cancer’s risk factors, signs and symptoms, and breast cancer examination. The data was collected from female university students studying in Pakistan. A total of 774 participants completed the survey and recorded their responses on an online pre-tested self-administered questionnaire. Only 29.8% of the participants have identified breast cancer history in their first-degree relatives as a risk factor. Moreover, 14.1% of the participant considered that the use of oral contraceptives for more than 5 years can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. In addition, inward pulled nipple, wounds around the nipple, and abrupt changes in the breast size were considered as the sign and symptoms of breast cancer by 25.2%, 25.7%, and 31.7% of the participants, respectively. Moreover, only 20.9% of the participants identified the correct year for starting breast cancer examination and 44.4% of the respondents marked that mammography should be initiated after 40 years. Overall, the university female students of Pakistan were poorly aware of breast cancer’s risk factors, signs and symptoms, and breast examination. This study has highlighted the need for initiation of aggressive strategies regarding breast cancer awareness in both the literate and illiterate female population of Pakistan.

Clinicopathological features associated to MiRNA-195 expression in patients with breast cancer: Evidence of a potential biomarker

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE

MiRNAs are a systematic class of small non-coding RNAs with impending role as tumor biomarkers. Our objective was to identify the level of expression of Mir-195 in patients with breast cancer along with its correlation with clinicopathologic features.

METHODS

A total of 209 females in which 139 histologically diagnosed breast cancer (BC) cases and 70 healthy controls matched for age, their relative clinical and histopathological findings were recorded from their laboratory reports and hospital record of the patients. Plasma was used for extraction of total RNA and cDNA was prepared by using both miR-195 stem loop RT primers and gene specific antisense primers while U6 IT was used as control. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) for miR-195 expression status was performed and amplification (down regulation) was recorded.

RESULTS

Of 139 samples the expression of miR-195 was down regulated in 72.6% cases and the remaining 27.3% cases behaved same as 70 healthy or normal controls. Significant correlation of low miR-195 expression with higher differentiation grade, lymph node metastasis and clinical stage was found.

CONCLUSION

Significant correlation between miR-195 expression and some clinicopathological features were recognized. MiR-195 could be used as potential non-invasive, molecular biomarker for early detection of breast cancer.

Exploring breast health practices of post-menopausal women: Implications to informed consent

In light of the contention surrounding breast health practices, the research aimed to explore post-menopausal women's experiences of such practices. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in July and August 2015 with 13 Australian women aged 54-74 years. Data were analysed thematically. Participants deemed their engagement with breast health practices as the 'right' thing. However, engaging in these 'right' practices appeared to be fostered by misconceptions. The findings suggest that women may not be making evidence-informed decisions to engage in breast screening; identify contemporary barriers to promoting informed decisions; and may inform information pertinent to breast screening policy, campaigns and decision aid designs.

Association Assessment among Risk Factors and Breast Cancer in a Low Income Country: Bangladesh

BACKGROUND

In the low incoming country Bangladesh, breast cancer is second most common neoplasm and is increasing at an alarming rate among females. Lack of awareness and illiteracy are contributory factors for late presentation and therefore mortality.

PURPOSE

To examine associations of different factors with breast cancer mortality and to raise awareness among the women of society in Bangladesh.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This descriptive case-control study was conducted on 160 participants from April 2011 till July 2014. Through a valid questionnaire covering personal and family history, data were collected by face to face interview. For analyzing correlations among factors with breast cancer data, binary logistic regression, Pearson's χ2- value, odd ratios and p-value tests were conducted with SPSS version 20.

RESULTS

The mean age of the patients was 43.0 (SD= ± 11.12). In ascending order the leading significant factors were hormone therapy (p<0.0000, OR=4.897), abortion (p<0.0001, OR=3.452), early start menarche (p<0.0002, OR=3.500), family history (p<0.0022, OR=3.235), and late menopause (p<0.0093, OR=3.674) with both χ2 test and logistic regression analyses. Non-significant factors were cancer experience, fatty food habits, marital status and taking alcohol.

CONCLUSIONS

Regarding the investigation of this study, significant and insignificant factor's correlation visualization with breast cancer will be helpful to increase awareness among Bangladeshi women as well as all over the world.
