The Quality of Life and Influencing Factors in Turkish Children Receiving Cancer Treatment

PURPOSE

This study was conducted to determine the quality of life and the influencing factors in children aged 8-12 years who are treated for cancer in Turkey.

DESIGN AND METHODS

The cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted on 300 children with cancer and their parents. The data were collected using the Questionnaire Form and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory PedsQL (4.0) Child and Parent Form. Descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, univariate and multiple binary logistic regression analysis were used for the evaluation.

RESULTS

The mean age of the children was 8.92 ± 0.98 years and the quality of life scores in all sub-dimensions and in total (36.26 ± 5.23) were found to be low. According to the univariate binary logistic regression analysis, the father being unemployed, the house being heated with a stove, and development of extravasation during the chemotherapy treatment process created a risk of decreasing the children's quality of life score (7.15 units, 41.29 units, and 44.47 units, respectively) (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The father's unemployment, heating the house with a stove, and the development of extravasation during treatment were found to affect the children's quality of life negatively in the study. Inter-institutional cooperation, taking the necessary measures to decrease the frequency of extravasation development, and ensuring nurses continue family-centered care during these processes are recommended to support the families.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Interventions for early detection and prevention of the negative changes related to the quality of life in children with cancer need to be planned.

A Descriptive Study to Analyze Chemotherapy-Induced Hair Loss and its Psychosocial Impact in Adults: Our Experience from a Tertiary Care Hospital

Background:

Hair loss is one of the most commonly reported and psychologically distressing adverse effects of chemotherapeutic agents. Studies on its impact on psychosocial aspect of cancer patients are lacking at present.

Objective:

To study the chemotherapeutic agents causing hair loss and its psychosocial implications in adults.

Materials and Methods:

Observational study was done for a period of 1 year, wherein all cancer patients, more than 18 years of age who developed hair loss while on chemotherapy were assessed for type of malignancy, details of chemotherapy protocol, their knowledge about chemotherapeutic agents induced hair loss, and its impact on their social life and patterns of adjustment to deal with it. A prevalidated closed-ended questionnaire was used as a data collection tool.

Results:

Out of 179 patients, 96 (53.6%) were males as against 80 (44.6%) females, and 49 (27.3%) patients were between 18 and 30 years of age. Carcinoma lung was the most common malignancy seen in 46 (25.6%) patients followed by rectosigmoid carcinoma in 41 (22.9%) patients. Combination of cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin was the most common combination resulting in hair loss in 49 (27.3%) cancer patients. A total of 101 (56.4%) patients felt that hair loss was the worst side effect of chemotherapy, while 29 (16.2%) had to continue because it was life-saving. A total of 129 (72%) patients said hair loss is affecting their social life; 37 (20.6%) patients were using hair accessories while 69 (38.5%) did not even attempt to hide hair loss as they were too occupied with fear of disease.

Conclusion:

Chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a common adverse effect in cancer patients undergoing treatment. A thorough counseling about it and methods to deal with it should be a part of management of the patients.

Pity: a qualitative study on Iranian women with breast cancer

BACKGROUND

Women with breast cancer (BC) are commonly confronted with others' pity. However, there is limited information about pity in Iranian women with BC. The aim of this study was to explore perceptions, reactions, coping strategies, and consequences of pity among Iranian women with BC.

METHODS

This qualitative study was carried out from March 2016 till October 2017. A purposive sample of 36 women with BC was selected with maximum variation from three health care centers in Alborz Province, Iran. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and analyzed using a conventional content-analysis approach.

RESULTS

Our findings indicated that Iranian women with BC experienced received pity and perceived unusual attention from others as due to certain reasons. Others' pity caused negative emotional reactions in them. They used self-protection strategies against others' pity. The consequences of self-protection against pity were normalizing the patient's flow of life and/or social isolation.

CONCLUSION

Pity is a serious psychosocial challenge in Iranian women with BC, with negative effects on quality of life. Therefore, pity should be considered in counseling and psychosocial screening of patients.
