Abstract
Background/purpose An increasing body of evidence indicates correlations between the symptoms of temporomandibular disorder and those of eating disorder (ED). However, further investigation is required to elucidate the temporal and causal relationships between the aforementioned disorders. Materials and methods This retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) was analyzed both as the cause and consequence of ED. We collected the data (from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2011) of patients with antecedent TMJD (N = 15,059) or ED (N = 1219) and their respective controls (1:10), matched by age, sex, income level, residential location, and comorbidities. This study included patients who had received a new diagnosis of an ED or a TMJD between January 1, 1998, and December 31, 2013. Cox regression models were used to assess the risk of ED or TMJD development in patients with antecedent TMJD or ED. Results TMJD patients had an approximately 3.70-fold (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.93-7.10) risk of ED development. Similarly, patients with ED had an approximately 4.78-fold (95 % CI: 2.52-9.09) risk of TMJD development. Subgroup analyses based on ED subtypes indicated antecedent TMJD and bulimia nervosa as the predictors of increased bulimia nervosa and TMJD risks (hazard ratios: 6.41 [95 % CI: 2.91 to 14.11] and 5.84 [95 % CI: 2.75 to 12.41]), respectively. Conclusion Previous TMJD and ED are associated with increased risks of subsequent ED and TMJD; these findings suggest the presence of a bidirectional temporal association between TMJD and ED.

Abstract
We investigated if interoceptive deficits could be the link between alexithymic traits and eating spectrum manifestations in a non-clinical sample. One-hundred sixty-one young adults (mean age: 23.2 ± 2.4 years) were evaluated with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), the Interoceptive Accuracy Scale (IAS), the Interoceptive Confusion Questionnaire (ICQ), and the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26). Questionnaires were administered with an online procedure (Microsoft Form, Office 365 A1, Pisa, Italy) (Study Protocol #0012005/2023). We compared ICQ, IAS, and TAS-20 scores in subjects who met the threshold for a potential eating spectrum disorder according to EAT-26 scores ≥ 20 (n = 27) vs. subjects who scored <20 (n = 134), with an ANCOVA corrected for 'age' and 'gender'. Subjects with EAT-26 ≥ 20, scored significantly higher at ICQ (54.4 ± 13.2 vs. 50.2 ± 6.8; p = 0.011), TAS-20 'Total Score' (60.8 ± 11.9 vs. 58.1 ± 9.2; p = 0.006), and TAS-20 'Identifying Feelings' (21.5 ± 7.6 vs. 17.3 ± 5.8; p = 0.0001). A binary logistic regression analysis, with EAT-26 scores < 20 vs. ≥20 as the dependent variable, and ICQ, IAS, TAS-20 total scores and dimensions, age, and gender (categorical) as covariates, showed that the only variable predicting eating spectrum symptomatology was 'ICQ Total Score' (OR = 1.075, 95% CI: 1.016-1.139; p = 0.013). Interoceptive confusion was the dimension linking the occurrence of alexithymic traits and eating spectrum manifestations.

Abstract
Membrane voltage controls the function of excitable cells and is mainly a consequence of the ratio between the extra- and intracellular potassium concentration. Potassium homeostasis is safeguarded by balancing the extra-/intracellular distribution and systemic elimination of potassium to the dietary potassium intake. These processes adjust the plasma potassium concentration between 3.5 and 4.5 mmol/L. Several genetic and acquired diseases but also pharmacological interventions cause dyskalemias that are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The thresholds at which serum K+ not only associates but also causes increased mortality are hotly debated. We discuss physiologic, pathophysiologic, and pharmacologic aspects of potassium regulation and provide informative case vignettes. Our aim is to help clinicians, epidemiologists, and pharmacologists to understand the complexity of the potassium homeostasis in health and disease and to initiate appropriate treatment strategies in dyskalemic patients.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Eating disorders lead to increased mortality and reduced quality of life. While the acute presentations of eating disorders frequently involve electrolyte abnormalities, it remains unknown whether electrolyte abnormalities may precede the future diagnosis of an eating disorder. OBJECTIVE To determine whether outpatient electrolyte abnormalities are associated with the future diagnosis of an eating disorder. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This population-level case-control study used provincial administrative health data for residents of Ontario, Canada aged 13 years or older from 2008 to 2020. Individuals without an eating disorder (controls) were matched 4:1 to individuals diagnosed with an incident eating disorder (cases) based on age and sex. Both groups had outpatient electrolyte measurements between 3 years and 30 days prior to index. Index was defined as the date of an eating disorder diagnosis in any inpatient or outpatient clinical setting for cases. Controls were assigned a pseudo-index date according to the distribution of index dates in the case population. Individuals with any prior eating disorder diagnosis were excluded. The data analyzed was from January 1, 2008, through June 30, 2020. EXPOSURES Any electrolyte abnormality, defined as abnormal test results for a composite of hypokalemia, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, hypernatremia, hypomagnesemia, hypophosphatemia, metabolic acidosis, or metabolic alkalosis. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Eating disorder diagnosis including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and eating disorder not otherwise specified. RESULTS A total 6970 eligible Ontario residents with an eating disorder (mean [SD] age, 28 (19) years; 6075 [87.2%] female, 895 [12.8%] male) were matched with 27 878 age- and sex-matched residents without an eating disorder diagnosis (mean [SD] age, 28 [19] years; 24 300 [87.2%] female, 3578 [12.8%] male). Overall, 18.4% of individuals with an eating disorder had a preceding electrolyte abnormality vs 7.5% of individuals without an eating disorder (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.12; [95% CI, 1.86-2.41]). The median (IQR) time from the earliest electrolyte abnormality to eating disorder diagnosis was 386 (157-716) days. Specific electrolyte abnormalities associated with a higher risk of an eating disorder were: hypokalemia (aOR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.70-2.32), hyperkalemia (aOR, 1.97; 95% CI, 1.48-2.62), hyponatremia (aOR, 5.26; 95% CI, 3.32-8.31), hypernatremia (aOR, 3.09; 95% CI, 1.01-9.51), hypophosphatemia (aOR, 2.83; 95% CI, 1.82-4.40), and metabolic alkalosis (aOR, 2.60; 95% CI, 1.63-4.15). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this case-control study, individuals with an eating disorder were associated with a preceding outpatient electrolyte abnormality compared with matched controls. Otherwise unexplained electrolyte abnormalities may serve to identify individuals who may benefit from screening for an underlying eating disorder.
