Strong confinement of active microalgae leads to inversion of vortex flow and enhanced mixing

Data-driven classification of individual cells by their non-Markovian motion

We present a method to differentiate organisms solely by their motion based on the generalized Langevin equation (GLE) and use it to distinguish two different swimming modes of strongly confined unicellular microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The GLE is a general model for active or passive motion of organisms and particles that can be derived from a time-dependent general many-body Hamiltonian and in particular includes non-Markovian effects (i.e., the trajectory memory of its past). We extract all GLE parameters from individual cell trajectories and perform an unbiased cluster analysis to group them into different classes. For the specific cell population employed in the experiments, the GLE-based assignment into the two different swimming modes works perfectly, as checked by control experiments. The classification and sorting of single cells and organisms is important in different areas; our method, which is based on motion trajectories, offers wide-ranging applications in biology and medicine.

Switching of behavioral modes and their modulation by a geometrical cue in the ciliate Stentor coeruleus

Protists ubiquitously live in nature and play key roles in the food web chain. Their habitats consist of various geometrical structures, such as porous media and rigid surfaces, affecting their motilities. A kind of protist, Stentor coeruleus, exhibits free swimming and adhering for feeding. Under environmental and culture conditions, these organisms are often found in sediments with complex geometries. The determination of anchoring location is essential for their lives. However, the factors that induce the behavioral transition from swimming to adhering are still unknown. In this study, we quantitatively characterized the behavioral transitions in S. coeruleus and observed the behavior in a chamber with dead ends made by a simple structure mimicking the environmental structures. As a result, the cell adheres and feeds in narrow spaces between the structure and the chamber wall. It may be reasonable for the organism to hide itself from predators and capture prey in these spaces. The behavioral strategy for the exploration and exploitation of spaces with a wide variety of geometries in their habitats is discussed.

When Soft Crystals Defy Newton's Third Law: Nonreciprocal Mechanics and Dislocation Motility

The effective interactions between the constituents of driven soft matter generically defy Newton's third law. Combining theory and numerical simulations, we establish that six classes of mechanics with no counterparts in equilibrium systems emerge in elastic crystals challenged by nonreciprocal interactions. Going beyond linear deformations, we reveal that interactions violating Newton's third law generically turn otherwise quiescent dislocations into motile singularities which steadily glide though periodic lattices.
