Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to critically assess the gaps in the existing methodologies of dietary data collection for diet diversity indicators. The study proposed the importance of smartphone application to overcome the drawbacks. The review paper identified and assessed the conventional methodologies used in diet diversity indicators including Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W), Minimum Dietary Diversity of Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices (IYCF-MDD), and Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS). The 80 research studies from 38 countries were critically assessed on the basis of their research aim, study design, target audience, dietary data collection methodology, sample size, dietary data type, dietary data collection frequency, and location point of dietary data collection. Results indicated that most studies employed interviewer-administered 24-h recall assessing the dietary diversity. The review paper concluded that smartphone application had potential to overcome the identified limitations of conventional methodologies including recall bias, social-desirability bias, interviewer training, and cost-time constraints.

Abstract
BACKGROUND India's recent increase in urbanization alongside with feminization of rural agriculture could increase the existing gender disparities in dietary diversity. With many rural men migrating to urban areas, women have increased domestic burdens as well as productive burdens such as making informed crop production decisions so household members consume a diverse diet. Given the rapid and recent onset of this phenomenon, there is a need to explore gender differentials in diet diversity across urban and rural areas to assess if certain populations are being disproportionately impacted by this trend. There are limited established quantitative studies discussing this gender disparity with respect to urbanization. Therefore, this paper compares dietary diversity among adult men, adult women, adolescent males, and adolescent females in urban and peri-urban locations. The authors also assess if various sociodemographic factors correlate with dietary diversity. METHODS Analyses were conducted on dietary diversity data collected by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) from selected urban (1108 individuals) and peri-urban (808 individuals) locations of Hyderabad, India. The total sample size of the population is n = 1816: 660 adult males, 662 adult females, 205 adolescent males, and 289 adolescent females. RESULTS Adult women and adolescent females have a higher diet disparity between peri-urban and urban areas when compared to adult males and adolescent males. Multivariate analyses followed by post hoc multiple comparisons testing further support that peri-urban adult women consume a less diverse diet compared to their urban counterparts and less than other peri-urban adult men and adolescent women. It was also found that marital status, type of household card owned, and the highest degree of education are statistically significant correlators of an individual's dietary diversity. CONCLUSIONS Given that urbanization could negatively impact already vulnerable populations such as peri-urban adult women, who play a key role in children's nutrition, it is important to provide support to these populations. This paper suggests it is possible to do so through government subsidization of peri-urban farmers to grow more diverse crops, fortifying easily accessible foods with commonly lacking micronutrients, including Vitamin A, folic acid, and iron, market access, and affordable prices.

Abstract
Because microbes use carotenoids as an antioxidant for protection, dietary carotenoids could be associated with gut microbiota composition. We aimed to determine associations among reported carotenoid intake, plasma carotenoid concentrations, and fecal bacterial communities in pregnant women. Pregnant women (n = 27) were enrolled in a two-arm study designed to assess feasibility of biospecimen collection and delivery of a practical nutrition intervention. Plasma and fecal samples were collected and women were surveyed with a 24-hr dietary checklist and recalls. Plasma carotenoids were analyzed by HPLC using photodiode array detection. Fecal bacteria were analyzed by 16S rRNA DNA sequencing. Results presented are cross-sectional from the 36-week gestational study visit combined across both study arms due to lack of significant differences between intervention and usual care groups (n = 23 women with complete data). Recent intake of carotenoid-containing foods included carrots, sweet potatoes, mangos, apricots, and/or bell peppers for 48% of women; oranges/orange juice (17%); egg (39%); tomato/tomato-based sauces (52%); fruits (83%); and vegetables (65%). Average plasma carotenoid concentrations were 6.4 µg/dL α-carotene (AC), 17.7 µg/dL β-carotene (BC), 11.4 µg/dL cryptoxanthin, 39.0 µg/dL trans-lycopene, and 29.8 µg/dL zeaxanthin and lutein. AC and BC concentrations were higher in women who recently consumed foods high in carotenoids. CR concentrations were higher in women who consumed oranges/orange juice. Microbiota α-diversity positively correlated with AC and BC. Microbiota β-diversity differed significantly across reported intake of carotenoid containing foods and plasma concentrations of AC. This may reflect an effect of high fiber or improved overall dietary quality, rather than a specific effect of carotenoids. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Little is known about the association between the gut microbiome and specific dietary microconstituents, such as carotenoids, especially during pregnancy. This research demonstrates that a carotenoid-rich diet during pregnancy supports a diverse microbiota, which could be one mechanism by which carotenoids promote health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Relevant evidence has addressed the negative impact of food processing on health. However, maternal ultra-processed food consumption is poorly investigated. AIM To analyze food consumption according to the degree of food processing, dietary diversity, and associated socio-demographic factors during pregnancy. METHODS Cross-sectional data was taken from a birth cohort in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with 142 pregnant women. We assessed diet using a qualitative food frequency questionnaire and classified food items according to the NOVA classification system as non-ultra-processed-foods and ultra-processed-foods. Non-ultra-processed-food and ultra-processed-food scores were calculated, reflecting weekly intake of more than one subgroup. Dietary diversity of the non-ultra-processed-food diet fraction was described according to the Food and Agriculture Organization guidelines. The association between food consumption and socio-demographic factors were investigated using logistic regression models. RESULTS Over 60% of the pregnant women reported consumption of at least three non-ultra-processed-food groups. However, only 25% had adequate dietary diversity. The level of education (Complete high school: odds ratio, 5.36; 95% confidence interval, 1.73-16.65) was associated with regular intake of "meat and eggs." Among the ultra-processed-food score, 27% of the participants described a weekly consumption of at least two ultra-processed-food subgroups. White women (odds ratio, 2.63; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-6.63) had a higher chance of reporting "packaged ready meals" consumption. CONCLUSIONS This study shows a high weekly consumption of ultra-processed-food subgroups and low dietary diversity of the non-ultra-processed-food fraction of the diet of pregnant women in Brazil. Our results elucidate the influence of socio-demographic characteristics on diet quality during pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periconceptional diet quality is commonly suboptimal and sociodemographic disparities in diet quality exist. However, it is unknown whether individual periconceptional diet quality is associated with obstetric outcomes. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to assess differences in maternal and neonatal outcomes according to maternal periconceptional diet quality. STUDY DESIGN This is a secondary analysis of a large, multicenter prospective cohort study of 10,038 nulliparous women receiving obstetrical care at 8 United States centers. Women underwent 3 antenatal study visits and had detailed maternal and neonatal data abstracted by trained research personnel. In the first trimester (between 6 and 13 weeks), women completed the modified Block 2005 Food Frequency Questionnaire, a semiquantitative assessment of usual dietary intake for the 3 months around conception. Responses were scored using the Healthy Eating Index-2010, which assesses adherence to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Higher scores on the Healthy Eating Index represent better adherence. Healthy Eating Index scores were analyzed by quartile; quartile 4 represents the highest dietary quality. Bivariable and multivariable analyses were performed to assess associations between diet quality and outcomes. A sensitivity analysis in which markers of socioeconomic status were included in the multivariable Poisson regression models was performed. RESULTS In the cohort of 8259 women with Healthy Eating Index data, the mean Healthy Eating Index score was 63 (±13) of 100. Women with the lowest quartile Healthy Eating Index scores were more likely to be younger, non-Hispanic black and Hispanic, publicly insured, low income, and tobacco users. They were more likely to have comorbidities (obesity, chronic hypertension, pregestational diabetes, mental health disorders), a higher prepregnancy body mass index, and less education. Women with lowest quartile scores experienced less frequent major perineal lacerations and more frequent postpartum hemorrhage requiring transfusion and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, which persisted on multivariable analyses (controlling for age, body mass index, tobacco use, chronic hypertension, pregestational diabetes mellitus, and mental health disorders) comparing women in each quartile with quartile 4. Additionally, women in quartiles 1 and 2 experienced greater adjusted relative risk of cesarean delivery compared with women in quartile 4. Neonatal outcomes also differed by dietary quartile, with women in the lowest Healthy Eating Index quartile experiencing greater adjusted relative risk of preterm birth, neonatal intensive care unit admission, small for gestational age infant, and low birthweight, and lower risk of macrosomia; all neonatal findings also persisted in multivariable analyses. The sensitivity analysis with inclusion of markers of socioeconomic status (race/ethnicity, insurance status, marital status) in the multivariable models supported these findings. CONCLUSION Periconceptional diet quality among women in the United States is poor. Poorer periconceptional dietary quality is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, even after controlling for potential comorbidities and body mass index, suggesting periconceptional diet may be an important social or biological determinant of health underlying existing health disparities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Maternal diet is critical to fetal development. This study aimed to explore the association between maternal dietary diversity during pregnancy and congenital heart defects (CHD) in Chinese population. METHODS A hospital-based case-control study was conducted including 474 cases and 948 controls in Northwest China. We recruited eligible women waiting for delivery in the hospital and gathered their diets during the whole pregnancy by a validated food frequency questionnaire. According to the FAO Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) guideline, the participants were categorized into "inadequate dietary diversity score (DDS)" (DDS < 5) and "adequate DDS" (DDS ≥ 5) groups. The association between dietary diversity and CHD was estimated using the mixed logistic regression models. RESULTS Case mothers had a lower DDS during pregnancy than the controls (P < 0.001). The proportions of women consuming all the ten defined food groups were lower in the inadequate DDS group than in the adequate DDS group among both cases and controls (all P < 0.001). The prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intake was higher in the inadequate DDS group than in the adequate DDS group among both cases and controls (all P < 0.05). Women in the adequate DDS group had reduced risks of having fetuses with total CHD (OR = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.45-0.84) and ventricular septal defects (OR = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.38-0.88). CONCLUSIONS Adequate DDS during pregnancy might be associated with a lower risk of CHD in offspring. Efforts to promote dietary diversity during pregnancy need to be strengthened to reduce the prevalence of CHD in Chinese population.
