Recycling phosphorus and calcium from aquaculture waste as a precursor for hydroxyapatite (HAp) production: a review

Water contaminated with phosphorus needs to be managed efficiently to ensure that clean water sources will be preserved. Aquaculture plays an essential role in supplying food and generating high revenue. However, the quantity of phosphorus released from aquaculture effluents is among the major concerns for the environment. Phosphorus is a non-renewable, spatially concentrated material essential for global food production. Phosphorus is also known as a primary source of eutrophication. Hence, phosphorus recovery and separation from different wastewater streams are mandatory. This paper reviews the source of phosphorus in the environment, focusing on aquaculture wastewater as a precursor for hydroxyapatite formation evaluates the research progress on maximizing phosphorus removal from aquaculture wastewater effluents and converting it into a conversion. Shrimp shell waste appears to be an essential resource for manufacturing high-value chemicals, given current trends in wealth creation from waste. Shrimp shell waste is the richest source of calcium carbonate and has been used to produce hydroxyapatite after proper treatment is reviewed. There have been significant attempts to create safe and long-term solutions for the disposal of shrimp shell debris. Through the discussion, the optimum condition of the method, the source of phosphorus, and the calcium are the factors that influence the formation of hydroxyapatite as a pioneer in zero-waste management for sustainability and profitable approach. This review will provide comprehensive documentation on resource utilization and product development from aquaculture wastewater and waste to achieve a zero-waste approach.

A high abundance of Firmicutes in the intestine of chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) cultured in an alkaline region

The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is a popular aquaculture product in East Asia, especially in China. In the last decade, rice-crab co-culture has rapidly expanded in China. Under this model, crabs are raised in rice fields instead of in traditional aquaculture ponds. In this study, we cultured two varieties of Chinese mitten crabs (Changjiang and Liaohe) in an alkaline region in northwest China and used Illumina MiSeq sequencing to compare the intestinal bacterial alpha diversity and community structure between traditional and co-culture aquaculture models, between two crab varieties, and between female and male crabs. Significant variations in intestinal bacterial communities were found between crab varieties and between female and male crabs but not between aquaculture models. These results show that rice-crab co-culture operations did not obviously impact the crab intestinal bacterial community compared with traditional pond aquaculture. Firmicutes was the most abundant bacterial phylum in the crab intestines (78%, relative abundance). Three dominant operational taxonomic units (OTUs) represented 73.2% of Firmicutes sequences and 56.8% of all sequences. A dominant OTU assigned as Firmicutes that was negatively correlated with crab body length, width, and weight was found in the source water for the experimental area. The results of this study suggest that the aquaculture of Chinese mitten crabs in alkaline regions requires more study to improve cultivation techniques.

Ipomoea aquatica extract reduces hepatotoxicity by antioxidative properties following dichlorvos administration in rats

Ipomoea aquatica (IA) with antioxidant properties is used in therapeutic trends. An organophosphate, dichlorvos (Dich), is a common insecticide with various side effects on living tissues. This study examines the role of IA on Dich-induced hepatotoxicity in male rats. Sixty-four male rats were divided into eight groups including sham, Dich (4 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneally), IA 1, 2, and 3 (250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg/day, respectively, orally), and Dich + IA 1, 2, and 3. All treatments were applied daily for 60 days. At the end of the treatment, the animals were sacrificed. The histopathological changes, leukocyte infiltration, and apoptosis were assessed by light and fluorescent microscopy. The serum levels of hepatic enzymes, nitrite oxide (NO), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were evaluated biochemically. Dich statistically significantly increased the NO level, hepatic enzyme activity, apoptosis, leukocyte infiltration, the mean diameter of hepatocytes (DHs), and central hepatic vein diameter (CHVD) and also decreased the TAC, mean weight of liver, and the total weight of rats compared to the sham group (P < 0.01). In all IA and Dich + IA groups, a statistically significant decrease was detected in apoptosis, leukocyte infiltration, hepatic enzyme activity, NO level, mean DH, and CHVD, whereas an increase in TAC level, mean liver weight, and total weight was detected compared to the Dich group (P < 0.01). IA, due to the antioxidant property, recovers the Dich-related catastrophic changes in liver.
