Assessing Vaping Views, Usage, and Vaping-Related Education Among Medical Students: A Pilot Study

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of University Students Regarding the Impact of Smokeless Tobacco, Areca Nut, E-cigarette Use on Oral Health

BACKGROUND

 The prevalence of smokeless tobacco, areca nut, and e-cigarette use among university students has raised concerns regarding their potential impact on oral health. Assessing students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward these substances is necessary. Understanding these factors can inform targeted interventions and policies promoting oral health among this population. This study aims to investigate the awareness levels, attitudes, and behaviors of university students regarding smokeless tobacco, areca nut, and e-cigarette use and their potential effects on oral health. Identifying gaps in knowledge and misconceptions will help guide educational initiatives and public health interventions tailored to the needs of university students.

METHODOLOGY

 The study employed a designed questionnaire, comprising 20 closed-ended queries, administered via the Google Forms platform. This survey was disseminated among college students in Chennai to gather insights for the study.

RESULTS

Of the 500 college students included in the study, almost 85.5% (427) were aware of the harmful effects of smokeless tobacco on oral health. Additionally, 74.6% (373) recognized that chewing areca nut contributes to poor oral health, while 59.8% (299) acknowledged the negative impact of e-cigarette use.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study concluded that 11.1% (6) used smokeless tobacco, 18.9% (94) chewed areca nut, and 1.9% (10) used areca nut along with tobacco. Regarding e-cigarettes, 3.9% (19) indulged in vaping as a substitute for smoking regular cigarettes and 12.1% (61) used it along with tobacco cigarettes. It was also noted that 27.8% (139) were trying to quit and 12.6% (63) have tried but could not succeed. Therefore, although there was awareness of the ill effects of these deleterious habits on oral health and the increased risk of oral cancer, there remains a need to educate individuals and provide support for quitting these habits. Our study will provide insights into the present scenario of the awareness of the association between oral health and tobacco/areca nut consumption among college students in Chennai city.

Knowledge, beliefs, attitude, and practices of E-cigarette use among dental students: A multinational survey

Background

E-cigarette use is a trend worldwide nowadays with mounting evidence on associated morbidities and mortality. Dentists can modify the smoking behaviors of their patients. This study aimed to explore the knowledge, beliefs, attitude, and practice of E-cigarette use among dental students.

Materials and methods

This multinational, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study recruited undergraduate dental students from 20 dental schools in 11 countries. The outcome variable was current smoking status (non-smoker, E-cigarette user only, tobacco cigarette smoker only, dual user). The explanatory variables were country of residence, sex, age, marital status, and educational level. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to explore the explanatory variables associated with E-cigarette smoking.

Results

Of the 5697 study participants, 5156 (90.8%) had heard about E-cigarette, and social media was the most reported source of information for 33.2% of the participants. For the 5676 current users of E-cigarette and/or tobacco smoking, 4.5% use E-cigarette, and 4.6% were dual users. There were significant associations between knowledge and country (P< 0.05), educational level (B = 0.12; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.21; P = 0.016) and smoking status (P< 0.05). The country of residence (P< 0.05) and smoking status (P< 0.05) were the only statistically significant factors associated with current smoking status. Similarly, there were statistically significant associations between attitude and country (P< 0.05 for one country only compared to the reference) and history of previous E-cigarette exposure (B = -0.52; 95% CI: -0.91, -0.13; P = 0.009). Also, the practice of E-cigarettes was significantly associated with country (P< 0.05 for two countries only compared to the reference) and gender (B = -0.33; 95% CI: -0.52, -0.13; P = 0.001).

Conclusion

The knowledge of dental students about E-cigarette was unsatisfactory, yet their beliefs and attitudes were acceptable. Topics about E-cigarette should be implemented in the dental curriculum.

Fundamentals of vaping-associated pulmonary injury leading to severe respiratory distress

Vaping of flavored liquids has been touted as safe alternative to traditional cigarette smoking with decreased health risks. The popularity of vaping has dramatically increased over the last decade, particularly among teenagers who incorporate vaping into their daily life as a social activity. Despite widespread and increasing adoption of vaping among young adults, there is little information on long-term consequences of vaping and potential health risks. This study demonstrates vaping-induced pulmonary injury using commercial JUUL pens with flavored vape juice using an inhalation exposure murine model. Profound pathological changes to upper airway, lung tissue architecture, and cellular structure are evident within 9 wk of exposure. Marked histologic changes include increased parenchyma tissue density, cellular infiltrates proximal to airway passages, alveolar rarefaction, increased collagen deposition, and bronchial thickening with elastin fiber disruption. Transcriptional reprogramming includes significant changes to gene families coding for xenobiotic response, glycerolipid metabolic processes, and oxidative stress. Cardiac systemic output is moderately but significantly impaired with pulmonary side ventricular chamber enlargement. This vaping-induced pulmonary injury model demonstrates mechanistic underpinnings of vaping-related pathologic injury.
