From the beginning of day one in medical school, students are always looking for ways to do something practical and skilled based instead of just reading a textbook. Having said that, learning a skill to save a life is the most fascinating thing. Although as a student, they may not have to attend to the patient, they could be present in accidents outside of the hospital, where they should be able to perform the necessary actions to save a life. After attending the training, one becomes somewhat confident that they can take control of the situation because they will know what to do until the emergency services arrive.

Impact of COVID-19 on Basic Life Support Training Among Medical Students: An Experimental Study

Aims and objectives: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the most common cause of mortality worldwide. Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) improves the victim's outcome, especially when the response time for advanced life support is prolonged. We performed a study to estimate the difference in knowledge among first-year medical students after basic life support (BLS) training (part of their foundation course) before and during the novel COVID-19 pandemic.

Materials and methods: We recruited first-year medical college students (batch of 2019-20: pre-COVID group - P and batch of 2020-21: COVID-19 era group - C) who were undergoing BLS training for the first time and consented to this study. Since the training was delayed and affected by COVID-19 for the batch of 2020-21, their training duration was shorter with more usage of audiovisual aids. The difference in the change in knowledge (by a questionnaire with 10 questions of one mark each) after training by the two methods was analysed. Analysis of variance, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Mann-Whitney U test, and chi-square tests was used as applicable to compare the groups, and p-value <0.05 was considered significant. The results are analysed by IBM SPSS version 20.0 software (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA).

Results: The median (inter-quartile range) marks in group P (89 students) in the pre-test was 3 (4-2) and in the post-test was 6 (7-5) (out of 10). The corresponding marks in group C (112 students) in the pre-test were 3 (4-2) and in post-test was 7 (8-6). The knowledge improvement in group C was more with all the three changes being significant (p=0.0001). In group C, females had more improvement than males (p=0.0001).

Conclusion: We found a significant increase in the improvement of the knowledge after the BLS training in group C compared to group P. In group C, the improvement was better in females (59% increase in mean marks versus 22% in males).

Technology Literacy in Undergraduate Medical Education: Review and Survey of the US Medical School Innovation and Technology Programs

BACKGROUND

Modern innovations, like machine learning, genomics, and digital health, are being integrated into medical practice at a rapid pace. Physicians in training receive little exposure to the implications, drawbacks, and methodologies of upcoming technologies prior to their deployment. As a result, there is an increasing need for the incorporation of innovation and technology (I&T) training, starting in medical school.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to identify and describe curricular and extracurricular opportunities for innovation in medical technology in US undergraduate medical education to highlight challenges and develop insights for future directions of program development.

METHODS

A review of publicly available I&T program information on the official websites of US allopathic medical schools was conducted in June 2020. Programs were categorized by structure and implementation. The geographic distribution of these categories across US regions was analyzed. A survey was administered to school-affiliated student organizations with a focus on I&T and publicly available contact information. The data collected included the founding year, thematic focus, target audience, activities offered, and participant turnout rate.

RESULTS

A total of 103 I&T opportunities at 69 distinct Liaison Committee on Medical Education-accredited medical schools were identified and characterized into the following six categories: (1) integrative 4-year curricula, (2) facilitated doctor of medicine/master of science dual degree programs in a related field, (3) interdisciplinary collaborations, (4) areas of concentration, (5) preclinical electives, and (6) student-run clubs. The presence of interdisciplinary collaboration is significantly associated with the presence of student-led initiatives (P=.001). "Starting and running a business in healthcare" and "medical devices" were the most popular thematic focuses of student-led I&T groups, representing 87% (13/15) and 80% (12/15) of respondents, respectively. "Career pathways exploration for students" was the only type of activity that was significantly associated with a high event turnout rate of >26 students per event (P=.03).

CONCLUSIONS

Existing school-led and student-driven opportunities in medical I&T indicate growing national interest and reflect challenges in implementation. The greater visibility of opportunities, collaboration among schools, and development of a centralized network can be considered to better prepare students for the changing landscape of medical practice.

Schoolteacher's knowledge, attitudes, and practice toward student with epilepsy in Taif, Saudi Arabia: Cross-sectional study

Background

Globally, teachers have misconceptions about epilepsy and its management. Little is known about Saudi Teachers' knowledge about epilepsy in Taif City.

Method

Descriptive questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey of a sample of schoolteachers in Taif Governate.

Results

The study included (n = 420) schoolteachers. All heard about epilepsy and (n = 116, 27.6%) knew about epilepsy from an afflicted individual, and (n = 102, 24.3%) from social media outlets. Most teachers believed that an epileptic fit constitutes seizures (n = 370, 88.1%). Some (n = 330, 78.6%) were not satisfied with their knowledge level. Attitudes were positively associated with years of experience, but, generally, were only modest with 50.2% fearful of having an epileptic child in class. The mean practice score was 6.9 (out of 15). Practice was improved by having a pupil with epilepsy in class.

Discussion and Conclusion

Schoolteachers in Taif showed excellent crude knowledge about epilepsy. However, knowledge of crucial details of the disorder were poor. This could be due to reliance on social media for information. There was high level of insight among schoolteachers regarding their sub-optimum knowledge levels. Knowledge was much better among experienced schoolteachers. Witnessing an epileptic fit improved knowledge. Teachers' attitudes toward epilepsy were negative, likely because of significant epilepsy-related stigma. Years of experience were significantly associated with increased attitude score. Schoolteachers' actual practice in handling epilepsy cases was below-expectation. There is pressing need for high-quality workshops to address knowledge and practice deficits.
