Biotin for Hair Loss: Teasing Out the Evidence

Objective

Biotin has widespread popularity as a hair supplement. We sought to review the literature regarding biotin's efficacy as a hair supplement.

Methods

We conducted a literature search of PubMed for articles specifically studying the use of oral biotin for hair growth or quality. Case reports and case series were excluded.

Results

Three studies met our inclusion criteria. The first study was the highest quality, with a double-blind and placebo-controlled study design, but their results found no difference between the biotin and placebo groups for hair growth. The other two studies investigated specific patient populations (patients on isotretinoin and female patients post-sleeve gastrectomy). Both studies were susceptible to multiple potential biases and neither had striking results in favor of biotin.

Limitations

Our review is limited by lack of available studies.

Conclusion

Given the widespread popularity of biotin as a hair supplement, one would presume that this claim must be grounded in strong evidence; however, there is a large discrepancy between the public's perception of its efficacy and the scientific literature. The utility of biotin as a hair supplement is not supported by high-quality studies.

Skin, hair, and nail supplements advertised on Instagram

Teens and young adults increasingly utilize social media for health information. Dermatologic supplements, advertised on social media, may be pharmacologically active and risk adverse effects. Instagram was searched, and 100 posts from March 2021 were evaluated for ingredients, health claims, account verification status, and endorsements. Only 4% of posts were made by verified accounts, and 1% of posts contained a visible Supplement Facts label. The Food and Drug Administration does not regulate dietary supplements. Ingredients such as vitamin A found in posts can pose teratogenic risk. Other potentially dangerous ingredients included saw palmetto and biotin. To accurately counsel patients who may retrieve health information from Instagram, it is important for practitioners to be familiar with social media claims.

Skin, Hair, and Nail Supplements: Marketing and Labeling Concerns

Background and objective

Dietary supplements advertised to “boost collagen” or for “skin, hair, and nail” health are becoming increasingly popular, despite a lack of evidence to support their use. These products are not regulated by the United States (U.S.) Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and hence there is no centralized database listing current products. The goal of this study was to document and examine the labeling and marketing methods of these products.

Methods

Supplements including the words “glow,” “beauty,” “skin,” “hair,” or “nails” on the label were included in the sample. Seven stores within a 3-mile radius were included.

Results

A total of 176 unique supplements were identified. It was found that most products lacked independent testing; many utilized outdated daily values (DVs) of nutrients. Some had confusing dosing instructions, and most products made health-related marketing claims.

Conclusion

Dermatologists and primary care providers should be aware of the marketing claims commonly made by these products. Patients should be educated that these claims are generally not verified by independent testing agencies, the U.S. FDA, or by high-quality randomized control trials.
