Hemangioma of the male breast: Presentation after thorn injury

Hemangiomas of the breast are uncommon and, in males, almost always present as a palpable breast mass. Here, we report the case of a male patient who was diagnosed with a breast hemangioma following an incidental injury to his breast, which triggered symptoms that prompted clinical work-up. As this diagnosis likely would have otherwise not been made, it follows that benign breast masses in males may be underreported and underdiagnosed.

Cavernous hemangioma in a male breast: A rare entity and overview of current literature

We describe a case of a benign breast cavernous hemangioma in a 77-year-old male patient, which is a rare entity with less than 20 cases published in the literature since 1936. The mammographic and sonographic features of breast hemangiomas are nonspecific and tissue sampling is necessary as the diagnosis of exclusion is male breast carcinoma. Core biopsy is a reliable diagnostic tool for breast hemangiomas. Differentiating between benign breast hemangiomas and angiosarcomas is of outmost importance to appropriate care management as the former can be treated conservatively with follow-up or surgical excision and the latter usually managed aggressively with mastectomy.

A Review of Breast Pain: Causes, Imaging Recommendations, and Treatment

Over two-thirds of women will experience breast pain in their lifetime. As one of the leading breast symptoms for which women seek medical attention, breast pain is suspected to be underreported and under-studied. Cyclical breast pain is related to hormonal changes. Noncyclical breast pain is independent of the menstrual cycle and can be idiopathic and related to chronic pain syndromes, infections, ill-fitting bras, musculoskeletal abnormalities, pregnancy, perimenopause, and postsurgical causes. Breast pain can also present in transgender patients and may require additional considerations as to the underlying cause. Imaging of mastalgia depends upon the suspected etiology. Inappropriate imaging for breast pain is associated with significant utilization of health care resources. Cyclical breast pain does not require an imaging work-up. The work-up of focal, noncyclical breast pain includes ultrasound for women aged younger than 40 years, and mammography and ultrasound for women aged 40 years and older. Management of breast pain is often supportive, as most breast pain resolves spontaneously. If pain persists, imaging and management should follow a step-wise approach. If conservative measures fail, second-line therapy is topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. If breast pain is severe and resistant to conservative methods, additional third-line therapies can be added by breast care specialists with specific knowledge of the potential deleterious side effects of these medications. While the causes of mastalgia are overwhelmingly benign, breast pain can significantly impact quality of life, and the breast radiologist should be familiar with causes, management, and treatment recommendations from a multidisciplinary approach.

Hemangioma of a Male Breast: Case Report and Review of the Literature

BACKGROUND Male breast hemangioma is a rare benign neoplasm that is usually excised for definitive diagnosis. CASE REPORT In our case report, we present a male octogenarian with multiple comorbidities who presented with a large palpable mass in his right breast. The diagnostic imaging studies were suggestive of a benign tumor, with a BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System) score of 3. Subsequent core needle biopsies were diagnostic of benign hemangioma. The patient was managed with observation due to his comorbidities. Benign vascular tumors in the male breast are exceptionally rare, and in our review of the literature we found only 14 previously published cases. Historically, fine needle aspiration has been found to be unreliable in making a definitive diagnosis and surgical excision has been the standard treatment. CONCLUSIONS Recent studies and our case report indicate that core needle biopsy may be a reliable diagnostic tool and observation is a possible option for hemangiomas in male patients who cannot undergo surgery.

Breast hemangioma with difficulty in preoperative diagnosis: a case report

We report a rare case of breast hemangioma found in a 70-year-old Japanese female. Before seeking medical attention, the patient noticed a hard mass in her right breast but denied associated symptoms. A mammography revealed a well-circumscribed, highly dense, lobular nodule located in the middle inter portion of the right breast. To verify this finding, we used ultrasonography which revealed an irregular, iso-echoic nodule measuring 10 mm in the same portion. Based on these findings, we suspected a malignancy and performed a core needle biopsy. Unexpectedly, a histological examination of the biopsy displayed normal vasculature, adipose, and mammary tissues. In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the mass was surgically excised under general anesthesia and sent to pathology. Pathological findings of the mass were positive for breast hemangioma, and the patient has had no recurrence of the disease for the past 24 months.
