Bioenergy relations with agriculture, forestry and other land uses: Highlighting the specific contributions of artificial intelligence and co-citation networks

The concerns with the environment and sustainability have promoted options for energy sources that mitigate the footprint of human life. The use of biomass from agriculture, forestry and other land uses (AFOLU) has enormous potential for the production of bioenergy as a renewable source of energy. In this context, this research aims to analyse the interrelationships between bioenergy and agriculture, forestry and other land uses, highlighting the contributions of the digital transition for these dimensions. To achieve these objectives, a bibliometric analysis through co-citation links (and items related to cited authors, references and sources) was carried out for the dimensions associated with the bioenergy and the AFOLU and after a specific literature survey was performed for the contributions from the digital transition for these frameworks. With this study, top authors, references and sources were identified for the topics assessed and it was highlighted the importance of digital transitions for more efficient bioenergy use and production in the worldwide contexts.

Conversion of Waste Cooking Oil into Bio-Fuel via Pyrolysis Using Activated Carbon as a Catalyst

The utilization of activated carbon (AC) as a catalyst for a lab-scale pyrolysis process to convert waste cooking oil (WCO) into more valuable hydrocarbon fuels is described. The pyrolysis process was performed with WCO and AC in an oxygen-free batch reactor at room pressure. The effects of process temperature and activated carbon dosage (the AC to WCO ratio) on the yield and composition are discussed systematically. The direct pyrolysis experimental results showed that WCO pyrolyzed at 425 °C yielded 81.7 wt.% bio-oil. When AC was used as a catalyst, a temperature of 400 °C and 1:40 AC:WCO ratio were the optimum conditions for the maximum hydrocarbon bio-oil yield of 83.5 and diesel-like fuel of 45 wt.%, investigated by boiling point distribution. Compared to bio-diesel and diesel properties, bio-oil has a high calorific value (40.20 kJ/g) and a density of 899 kg/m³, which are within the bio-diesel standard range, thus demonstrating its potential use as a liquid bio-fuel after certain upgradation processes. The study revealed that the optimum AC dosage promoted the thermal cracking of WCO at a reduced process temperature with a higher yield and improved quality compared to noncatalytic bio-oil.

Low Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) Energy Crops to Bioenergy and Biofuels—A Review

Energy crops are dedicated cultures directed for biofuels, electricity, and heat production. Due to their tolerance to contaminated lands, they can alleviate and remediate land pollution by the disposal of toxic elements and polymetallic agents. Moreover, these crops are suitable to be exploited in marginal soils (e.g., saline), and, therefore, the risk of land-use conflicts due to competition for food, feed, and fuel is reduced, contributing positively to economic growth, and bringing additional revenue to landowners. Therefore, further study and investment in R&D is required to link energy crops to the implementation of biorefineries. The main objective of this study is to present a review of the potential of selected energy crops for bioenergy and biofuels production, when cultivated in marginal/degraded/contaminated (MDC) soils (not competing with agriculture), contributing to avoiding Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) burdens. The selected energy crops are Cynara cardunculus, Arundo donax, Cannabis sativa, Helianthus tuberosus, Linum usitatissimum, Miscanthus × giganteus, Sorghum bicolor, Panicum virgatum, Acacia dealbata, Pinus pinaster, Paulownia tomentosa, Populus alba, Populus nigra, Salix viminalis, and microalgae cultures. This article is useful for researchers or entrepreneurs who want to know what kind of crops can produce which biofuels in MDC soils.

Microwave-assisted co-pyrolysis of chlorella vulgaris and polypropylene: Characteristic and product distribution analyses

The co-pyrolysis characteristics and product yield of Chlorella vulgaris (CV) and polypropylene (PP) under different mixing ratios (10:0, 8:2, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6, 2:8 and 0:10) were studied by microwave oven. Then the effects of different graphite (GP) additions (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) on the optimum mixing ratio of CV and PP were investigated. The composition of bio-oil was analyzed by GC-MS. The results indicated that the C8P2 (CV/PP = 8:2) group had the best pyrolysis characteristics. The maximum weight loss rate (R_m) and average weight loss rate (R_v) of the C8P2 with 30% GP addition achieved the peak value. In the absence of GP, compared with C10P0 group, the contents of nitrogen compounds in bio-oil of the C8P2 group decreased by 21.58%. After adding GP to the C8P2 group, the nitrogen compounds in bio-oil of 30% GP group was 1.93% lower than that in 0% GP group.
