Animal lifestyle affects acceptable mass limits for attached tags

Animal-attached devices have transformed our understanding of vertebrate ecology. To minimize any associated harm, researchers have long advocated that tag masses should not exceed 3% of carrier body mass. However, this ignores tag forces resulting from animal movement. Using data from collar-attached accelerometers on 10 diverse free-ranging terrestrial species from koalas to cheetahs, we detail a tag-based acceleration method to clarify acceptable tag mass limits. We quantify animal athleticism in terms of fractions of animal movement time devoted to different collar-recorded accelerations and convert those accelerations to forces (acceleration × tag mass) to allow derivation of any defined force limits for specified fractions of any animal's active time. Specifying that tags should exert forces that are less than 3% of the gravitational force exerted on the animal's body for 95% of the time led to corrected tag masses that should constitute between 1.6% and 2.98% of carrier mass, depending on athleticism. Strikingly, in four carnivore species encompassing two orders of magnitude in mass (ca 2–200 kg), forces exerted by ‘3%' tags were equivalent to 4–19% of carrier body mass during moving, with a maximum of 54% in a hunting cheetah. This fundamentally changes how acceptable tag mass limits should be determined by ethics bodies, irrespective of the force and time limits specified.

Applications of unmanned aerial vehicles in intertidal reef monitoring

Monitoring of intertidal reefs is traditionally undertaken by on-ground survey methods which have assisted in understanding these complex habitats; however, often only a small spatial footprint of the reef is observed. Recent developments in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide new opportunities for monitoring broad scale coastal ecosystems through the ability to capture centimetre resolution imagery and topographic data not possible with conventional approaches. This study compares UAV remote sensing of intertidal reefs to traditional on-ground monitoring surveys, and investigates the role of UAV derived geomorphological variables in explaining observed intertidal algal and invertebrate assemblages. A multirotor UAV was used to capture <1 cm resolution data from intertidal reefs, with on-ground quadrat surveys of intertidal biotic data for comparison. UAV surveys provided reliable estimates of dominant canopy-forming algae, however, understorey species were obscured and often underestimated. UAV derived geomorphic variables showed elevation and distance to seaward reef edge explained 19.7% and 15.9% of the variation in algal and invertebrate assemblage structure respectively. The findings of this study demonstrate benefits of low-cost UAVs for intertidal monitoring through rapid data collection, full coverage census, identification of dominant canopy habitat and generation of geomorphic derivatives for explaining biological variation.

A cost-effective and informative method of GPS tracking wildlife

In wildlife research, our ability to GPS track sufficient numbers of individuals is always limited by cost, which restricts inference of species–habitat relationships. Here, we describe the modification and use of a relatively new and inexpensive off-the-shelf GPS device, to provide detailed and accurate information on the movement patterns of individuals (mountain brushtail possums, Trichosurus cunninghami), including how movement varies through time, and how individuals interact with each other. Our results demonstrated that this technology has enormous potential to contribute to an improved understanding of the movement patterns and habitat preferences of wildlife at a fraction of the cost of traditional GPS technology.

MR imaging of brachial plexopathy in breast cancer patients without palpable recurrence

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the role of MR imaging in detecting brachial plexus (BP) abnormalities in breast cancer patients with plexopathy but without palpable masses.

DESIGN

MR imaging of the BP was performed on 26 breast cancer patients with brachial plexopathy without palpable regional masses, using 0.5 T and 1.5 T imaging systems. Findings were correlated with the clinical diagnoses.

PATIENTS

Twenty-six patients with brachial plexopathy and history of breast cancer were enrolled in the study. All patients presented with plexopathy symptoms. Fourteen patients were positive and 12 patients were indeterminate for BP metastasis according to clinical criteria.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

MR imaging demonstrated masses involving the BP representing metastases in two patients. Nine patients had other regional abnormalities with a normal brachial plexus. It is concluded that MR imaging is useful in the assessment and direction of therapy of brachial plexopathy in breast cancer patients by detecting both metastases to the BP as well as other abnormalities, unrelated to the BP, which may explain the patient's symptoms.

A double-blind clinical trial of isoniazid in Huntington disease

Isoniazid (INH) was given to nine patients with Huntington disease (HD) in a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. In an earlier open trial, three of six patients had improved, and one of them remained improved after 7 years on INH. Only one patient benefited in the present trial. All patients excreted small amounts of hydrazine in their urine while taking INH, and it is this INH metabolic that elevates GABA content in brain. GABA concentrations were markedly increased in CSF during INH therapy. Lack of clinical improvement in most HD patients despite elevation of brain GABA content suggests that in the minority who are benefited, INH may be acting by some mechanism other than increase of GABAergic neuronal function.

Failure of aminooxyacetic acid therapy in Huntington disease

Seven patients with Huntington disease were treated with aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA), an inhibitor of gamma-aminobutyric acid aminotransferase (GABA-T), in an effort to alleviate symptoms by increasing brain GABA content. AOAA was given orally in a placebo-controlled crossover trial in which patients, relatives, and three of the evaluating physicians remained blind. Toxic symptoms occurred in all seven patients when AOAA dosage was increased beyond 2 mg per kilogram per day, and included drowsiness, ataxia, seizures, and psychotic behavior. In five patients who took AOAA for 4 months, no clinical improvement was observed. Biochemical monitoring showed that less inhibition of hepatic GABA-T enzyme activity was achieved than in patients treated with large doses of isoniazid. Results of this trial neither support nor exclude the possible therapeutic usefulness of increasing brain GABA content in Huntington disease.
