The immediate effect of water treadmill walking exercise on overground in-hand walking locomotion in the horse

Water treadmill (WT) exercise is frequently used for training/rehabilitation of horses but the effect of WT exercise on short-term movement patterns is yet to be investigated. The objective of this study was to determine the immediate effect of WT exercise on overground limb and back kinematics. Six horses (mean ± standard deviation., age 15±6.5 years, height 164±2 cm and weight 539±37 kg) walked twice in a straight line, led from both sides, before and after a standardised WT exercise session (19 min duration; speed 1.6 m/s; water depths: 0.0/7.5/21.0/32.0/47.0 cm) on a flat concrete surface. Horses wore five inertial-measurement-units to determine poll/wither/pelvic displacement, and 10 anatomical markers to determine fetlock/carpal/tarsal joint angles at specific stride points. Degree of mediolateral tarsal oscillation during stance was graded. Wilcoxon-signed-rank tests were used to investigate differences between pre- and post-WT exercise for each variable. Post-WT exercise, there was a significant decrease in hindlimb fetlock extension at mid-stance compared with pre-WT exercise. No significant changes in movement patterns of the poll/withers/pelvis were detected post-WT exercise. In all horses there was greater mediolateral tarsal oscillation during the stance phase of the stride post-WT exercise, which could relate to muscle fatigue. The results suggest that a 19-min WT session has an effect on immediately-following overground in-hand walking locomotion patterns. Further work is required to determine the duration of this effect, and how different WT speeds and water depths affect locomotion patterns.

A descriptive study quantifying warm-up patterns in elite and non-elite dressage horses in a field environment

There is very little reported information on the content of the warm-up period in dressage horses. Our objective was to quantify warm-up content, patterns and duration in a simulated competition (field) environment in British dressage horses. Twelve elite (Group A) and 20 non-elite (Group B) mixed-breed dressage horses, all ridden by advanced level riders, were assessed. Riders warmed-up as they would normally for a competition prior to completing a test. The warm-up was videoed and assessed retrospectively. Total duration, time spent in the different paces, and on which rein, was recorded, along with information on which movements were performed, and the head and neck position. Appropriate statistical tests were used to compare variables between groups. Mean warm-up duration, time in walk and trot did not differ between groups, however Group A horses spent significantly more time in canter than Group B horses (P=0.0024). Group A horses also spent significantly more time in collected and extended paces, and performing advanced movements than Group B horses (P≤0.0421 for all variables). There was no difference in time spent on the left and right rein in either group. Results provide novel information on the warm-up content in a competition (field) environment for dressage horses. The findings indicate that that the content of the warm-up of elite and non-elite dressage horses was significantly different, with elite horses warming up for longer, spending more time in canter, performing more changes within paces and advanced movements. Dressage horses appear to warm-up more symmetrically than has been reported in jumping horses.

Relationship between pelvic tilt control, horse-rider synchronisation, and rider position in sitting trot

Investigation of dressage riders suggests that the performance outcomes of riding can be enhanced by a rider correctly adapting the motion of their pelvis. The pelvis has been identified as an important component of the physical connection of the horse and the rider. This preliminary study aimed to assess whether riders with better control of their pelvic movement, had increased postural stability and horse-rider synchronicity. Twenty-six amateur riders competing in Novice to Grand Prix level dressage rode 35 mixed breed horses in active dressage training which they were used to riding. Riders were divided into two groups according to their ability to perform posterior pelvic tilt whilst sat on a Swiss ball. High-speed motion-capture was captured from the left and right sides and used to assess rider body position, angular measurements and horse-rider synchronicity whilst riding a pre-defined test at collected trot on an artificial surface. Appropriate statistical analyses were used to compare variables between groups. Differences between groups were compared using one-way ANOVA or independent samples t-tests; the significance level was set at P<0.05. No riders in the study were able to perform anterior or posterior pelvic tilt whilst seated on a ball without demonstrating mild or major compensations; the most common of these were inclusion of the lumbar spine or leaning forwards or backwards. The results suggest that riders who could not perform pelvic tilt without major compensations had a more leaning forward posture, were more asymmetrical between the left and right sides and more phase shifted during the swing and stance phases than riders who could perform pelvic tilt with mild compensations.

Limb and thoracolumbosacral kinematics over an upright and parallel spread fence

Jumping mechanics have been investigated at take-off, flight and landing, mainly in reference to the limbs with limited evaluation of the thoracolumbosacral region. The objectives of this study were to investigate head, neck, thoracolumbosacral and limb angles in a group of experienced showjumping horses (competing at 1.20-1.60 m) over an upright and parallel spread fence. Ten horses in active showjumping training were recruited (mean 8 years old). High-speed videography (240 Hz) was used to determine thoracolumbosacral kinematic variables of the approach and take-off. No significant differences between the upright and parallel spread fences were observed for any of the variables measured. Individual horse review showed that neck-trunk, thoracolumbar, lumbosacral, coxofemoral angles, take-off distance and speed patterns at take-off were consistent among horses and also repeatable between fence types. Head-neck, stifle and tarsal angles had great variability among horses. The main limitation of this study was that only 2D motion analysis was carried out. In conclusion, analysis of individual horse patterns showed that head, neck, back and limb angles were repeatable over submaximal upright and spread fences in ten horses. Some angles were consistent among horses, but others had individual horse variation.

Back kinematics at take-off in elite showjumping horses over an upright and parallel-spread fence forming part of a three-fence combination

The objective of this study was to evaluate head, neck and back kinematics during take-off in elite level horses jumping, and to compare these over an upright and parallel spread fence. Ten mixed-breed elite-level showjumping horses were opportunistically evaluated jumping the same 15-fence course (1.35 m) during a British Equestrian Federation World Class Performance three-day training session. Two fences were evaluated using high-speed motion-capture (250 Hz). Head, neck and back kinematics of the horse were determined at take-off, at vertical orientation of leading and trailing third metacarpus/tarsus and as the trailing hindlimb left the floor. Very consistent patterns between all horses over both upright and spread fences were observed in neck-trunk (NT) angle, lumbosacral (LS) angle, the angle of the thoracolumbar (TL) to horizontal and of LS to horizontal. Head-neck (HN), TL angle and distance to fence showed moderate variation between horses. There were no significant differences between fence-type in HN, NT, TL, LS angle or distance to the fence, but TL to the horizontal angle was greater over the spread for all stride phases. LS to the horizontal angle was greater over the upright when the leading forelimb was vertical at take-off and when the trailing hindlimb was vertical at take-off. These findings suggest that elite horses may use some similar strategies to achieve a successful jump. Further understanding regions which are most influenced by velocity, rider, and horse stability could enable us to modify jumping patterns for the performance and welfare of jumping horses.

Quantification of warm-up patterns in elite showjumping horses over three consecutive days: a descriptive study

There is very little reported information on warm-up practices in showjumping horses. The objective was to quantify warm-up jumping patterns/duration in a competition (field) environment in showjumping horses. Ten mixed-breed elite showjumping horses were assessed at a three-day training session. Riders warmed-up as they would normally for an elite competition and jumped at least one round of a 15-fence (135-145 cm) course on each day. Fence type/height, number of jumping efforts and lead take-off/landing limbs during warm-up were recorded. Rider global-positioning-system and inertial-motion-sensors recorded speed, time spent in each pace/rein plus stride length and stride duration during warm-up and course. Heart rate (HR) was recorded when the horse was resting in its stable and for the duration of the ridden exercise. Appropriate paired statistical tests were used to compare variables between days, and between warm-up and the round(s). Mean warm-up duration, time in each pace and on each rein did not differ within rider between days, however, there were inter-rider differences (mean warm-up duration = 18 min; range = 12-27 min). Number of jumping efforts and fence type/height did not differ between days. During warm-up, there was no preference in canter lead when approaching fences. However, on departure there was a preferred canter lead, plus jump landing and leaving lead limb asymmetry (left canter lead predominating in all cases). Horses cantered slower, with a shorter stride length and a longer stride duration during warm-up compared to when jumping the round (speed – warm-up: 4.21±0.09 m/s; round: 5.53±0.15 m/s; stride length – warm-up: 2.59±0.06 m; round: 3.16±0.08 m; stride duration – warm-up: 0.62±0.02 s; round: 0.58±0.03 s). Mean resting HR significantly decreased on consecutive study days. Mean, peak and final HR during warm-up did not significantly change between days. Results provide novel information on warm-up patterns in a competition (field) environment for elite horses, and suggest that showjumping horses may be warmed-up asymmetrically.

Association of type of sport and performance level with anatomical site of orthopaedic injury diagnosis

REASON FOR PERFORMING STUDY

Although anecdotal reports of increased orthopaedic injury risk in equine sports exist, there is little scientific evidence to support this.

OBJECTIVES

To test whether horses undertaking a single competitive sport have increased risk of specific injuries compared to those used for general purpose riding (GP); and whether injury type varies with sport category and performance level.

METHODS

Data from 1069 records of horses undergoing orthopaedic evaluation (1998-2003) and meeting inclusion criteria were reviewed. Sport category (GP, showjumping, dressage, eventing, racing), level (nonelite or elite) and diagnosis were recorded. Effects of sport category and level on probability of a specific diagnosis were assessed using chi-squared tests. Logistic regression was used to determine which competitive sports and levels increased risk of injury compared with GP.

RESULTS

Overall there was a significant effect of sport category and level on diagnosis (P<0.0001). There was significant difference between anatomical site injured and sport category (P<0.0001); a high risk of forelimb superficial digital flexor tendon injury in elite eventing (P<0.0001) and elite showjumping (P = 0.02); distal deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) injury in elite showjumping (P = 0.002); and hindlimb suspensory ligament injury in elite (P<0.0001) and nonelite (P = 0.001) dressage. There was a low risk of tarsal injury in elite eventing (P = 0.01) and proximal DDFT injury in dressage (P = 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Horses competing in different sports are predisposed to specific injuries; particular sports may increase the risk of injury at certain anatomical sites; and the type and site of injury may reflect the type and level of performance.
