Abstract
Using various techniques, natural polymers can be successfully used as a matrix to immobilize a residual microbial biomass in a form that is easy to handle, namely biosorbents, and which is capable of retaining chemical species from polluted aqueous media. The biosorption process of reactive Brilliant Red HE-3B dye on a new type of biosorbent, based on a residual microbial biomass of Saccharomyces pastorianus immobilized in sodium alginate, was studied using mathematical modeling of experimental data obtained under certain conditions. Different methods, such as computer-assisted statistical analysis, were applied, considering all independent and dependent variables involved in the reactive dye biosorption process. The optimal values achieved were compared, and the experimental data supported the possibility of using the immobilized residual biomass as a biosorbent for the studied reference dye. The results were sufficient to perform dye removals higher than 70-85% in an aqueous solution containing around 45-50 mg/L of reactive dye, and working with more than 20-22 g/L of prepared immobilized microbial biosorbent for more than 9.5-10 h. Furthermore, the proposed models agreed with the experimental data and permitted the prediction of the dye biosorption behavior in the experimental variation field of each independent variable.

Abstract
Natural polymers can themselves be efficient as materials with biosorptive properties but can also be used to transform microbial biomass into an easy-to-handle form, respectively, into biosorbents, through immobilization. The article aims to study biosorbents based on residual microbial biomass (Saccharomyces pastorianus yeast, separated after the brewing process by centrifugation and dried at 80 °C) immobilized in sodium alginate. The biosorptive properties of this type of biosorbent (spherical particles 2 and 4 mm in diameter) were studied for removal of reactive dye Brilliant Red HE-3B (with concentration in range of 16.88–174.08 mg/L) from aqueous media. The paper aims at three aspects: (i) the physico-chemical characterization of the biosorbent (Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra); (ii) the modeling of biosorption data in order to calculate the quantitative characteristic parameters using three equilibrium isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin–Radushkevich—DR); and (iii) the evaluation of thermal effect and the possible mechanism of action. The results of the study showed that biosorption capacity evaluated by Langmuir (I) model is 222.22 mg/g (ϕ = 2 mm) and 151.51 mg/g (ϕ = 4 mm) at 30 °C, and the free energy of biosorption (E) is in the range of 8.45–13.608 KJ/mol (from the DR equation). The values of thermodynamic parameters suggested an exothermic process due the negative value of free Gibbs energy (ΔG0 = −9.031 kJ/mol till −3.776 kJ/mol) and enthalpy (about ΔH0 = −87.795 KJ/mol). The obtained results underline our finding that the immobilization in sodium alginate of the residual microbial biomass of Saccharomyces pastorianus led to an efficient biosorbent useful in static operating system in the case of effluents with moderate concentrations of organic dyes.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop polysaccharide-based emulsions incorporated with lavender essential oil and their application on cellulosic support for patches obtaining. The lavender essential oil has been added to emulsions as an active compound mainly due to its antimicrobial properties. In this study, emulsions were used to deliver active ingredients (lavender essential oil). The chemical composition of essential oil was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A total of seven emulsions (RiACL) were evaluated by determining rheological parameters and microbiological analysis. One of the emulsions (R7ACL) was applied to cellulosic support to obtain non-irritating textiles with controlled release of the active compound and moisturizing effects. Obtained cellulosic support was analyzed in terms of active compound controlled release, toxicity and antimicrobial testing, and skin analysis in healthy volunteers. It was found that the cellulosic supports treated with O/W emulsions are non-irritating, have softness and moisturizing effects, and can be used safely in topical applications for patches obtaining.

Polysaccharides as Support for Microbial Biomass-Based Adsorbents with Applications in Removal of Heavy Metals and Dyes. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:2893. Abstract
The use of biosorbents for the decontamination of industrial effluent (e.g., wastewater treatment) by retaining non-biodegradable pollutants (antibiotics, dyes, and heavy metals) has been investigated in order to develop inexpensive and effective techniques. The exacerbated water pollution crisis is a huge threat to the global economy, especially in association with the rapid development of industry; thus, the sustainable reuse of different treated water resources has become a worldwide necessity. This review investigates the use of different natural (living and non-living) microbial biomass types containing polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids (natural polymers) as biosorbents in free and immobilized forms. Microbial biomass immobilization performed by using polymeric support (i.e., polysaccharides) would ensure the production of efficient biosorbents, with good mechanical resistance and easy separation ability, utilized in different effluents' depollution. Biomass-based biosorbents, due to their outstanding biosorption abilities and good efficiency for effluent treatment (concentrated or diluted solutions of residuals/contaminants), need to be used in industrial environmental applications, to improve environmental sustainability of the economic activities. This review presents the most recent advances related the main polymers such as polysaccharides and microbial cells used for biosorbents production; a detailed analysis of the biosorption capability of algal, bacterial and fungal biomass; as well as a series of specific applications for retaining metal ions and organic dyes. Even if biosorption offers many advantages, the complexity of operation increased by the presence of multiple pollutants in real wastewater combined with insufficient knowledge on desorption and regeneration capacity of biosorbents (mostly used in laboratory scale) requires more large-scale biosorption experiments in order to adequately choose a type of biomass but also a polymeric support for an efficient treatment process.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC), is the second cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide is one of the most prevalent types of cancers. Conventional treatment continues to rely on surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, but for advanced cases, adjuvant chemotherapy remains the main approach for improving surgical outcomes and lower the disease recurrence probability. Chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity is the main dose-limiting factor for many chemotherapeutic regimens, including 5-FU, and one of the biggest oncological challenges. Up to 40% of the patients receiving 5-FU get mucositis, 10-15% of which develop severe symptoms. In this context, our study aimed to develop a bioinspired nanosized drug delivery system as a strategy to reduce 5-FU associated side effects, such as GI mucositis. To this end, SF-based nanoparticles were prepared and characterized in terms of size and morphology, as well as in terms of in vitro antitumoral activity on a biomimetic colorectal cancer model by investigation of apoptosis, DNA fragmentation, and release of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, the capacity of the SF-based nanocarriers to offer intestinal protection against 5-FU-induced GI mucositis was evaluated in vivo using a mouse model that mimics the chemotherapy-associated gut mucositis occurring in colorectal cancer. Our studies show that silk fibroin nanoparticles efficiently deliver 5-FU to tumor cells in vitro while protecting against drug-induced GI mucositis in a mouse model.

Abstract
A biomaterial based on poly(vinyl alcohol) reticulated with tricarboxi-cellulose obtained by TEMPO oxidation (OxC25) was used as a new biosorbent for Co(II) ions retention from aqueous solutions. The biosorption process of Co(II) ions was studied while mainly considering the operational factors that can influence it (i.e., biosorbent concentration, pH of the aqueous media, temperature and contact time of the phases). The maximum adsorption capacity was 181.82 mg/g, with the biosorption well fitted by the Langmuir model. The kinetic modeling of the biosorption process was based on certain models: Lagergreen (pseudo first order model), Ho (pseudo second order model), Elovich (heterogeneous biosorbent model), Webber-Morris (intraparticle diffusion model) and McKay (film diffusion model). The corresponding kinetic model suggests that this biosorption process followed a pseudo-second order kinetic model and was developed in two controlled steps beginning with film diffusion and followed by intraparticles diffusion.

Coal fly ash as adsorptive material for treatment of a real textile effluent: operating parameters and treatment efficiency. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2013; 20:2226-2235. Abstract
The experimental results performed after the application of one single-stage treatment by sorption onto coal fly ash are evaluated in order to decolorize a real textile effluent of a private company specializing in manufacturing of cotton fabrics (i.e., sorption performance applied for a real textile effluent collected after the fabric dyeing, rinsing, and final finishing steps). The experiments are focused on studying the effect of initial textile effluent pH, adsorbent dose, temperature and adsorption time, considered as operating parameters of sorption process for high pollutant removals (e.g., organic pollutants as dyes, phenols, polymeric, and degradation compounds), and decoloration. The results indicate high values of decoloration degree (55.42-83.00%) and COD removal (44.44-61.11%) when it is worked at pH ≤2 with coal ash dose of 12-40 g/L, temperature higher than 20-25 °C, and continuous static operating regime (with an initial agitation step of 3-5 min). The treated textile effluent fulfills the quality demand, and is recyclable, inside reused or discharged after a stage of neutralization (standard pH of 6.5-8.5 for all textile effluent discharges). Also, the final effluent is able to follow the common path to the central biological treatment plant (i.e., a centralized treatment plant for all companies acting in the industrial site area with mechanical-biological steps for wastewater treatment) or may be directly discharged in the nearly watercourse.

Evaluation of environmental impact produced by different economic activities with the global pollution index. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2012; 19:2448-2455. Abstract
INTRODUCTION The paper analyses the environment pollution state in different case studies of economic activities (i.e. co-generation electric and thermal power production, iron profile manufacturing, cement processing, waste landfilling, and wood furniture manufacturing), evaluating mainly the environmental cumulative impacts (e.g. cumulative impact against the health of the environment and different life forms). MATERIALS AND METHODS The status of the environment (air, water resources, soil, and noise) is analysed with respect to discharges such as gaseous discharges in the air, final effluents discharged in natural receiving basins or sewerage system, and discharges onto the soil together with the principal pollutants expressed by different environmental indicators corresponding to each specific productive activity. The alternative methodology of global pollution index (I (GP)*) for quantification of environmental impacts is applied. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Environmental data analysis permits the identification of potential impact, prediction of significant impact, and evaluation of cumulative impact on a commensurate scale by evaluation scores (ES(i)) for discharge quality, and global effect to the environment pollution state by calculation of the global pollution index (I (GP)*). CONCLUSIONS The I (GP)* values for each productive unit (i.e. 1.664-2.414) correspond to an 'environment modified by industrial/economic activity within admissible limits, having potential of generating discomfort effects'. The evaluation results are significant in view of future development of each productive unit and sustain the economic production in terms of environment protection with respect to a preventive environment protection scheme and continuous measures of pollution control.

Proliferation, differentiation and characterization of osteoblasts from human BM mesenchymal cells. Cytotherapy 2008; 9:682-96. Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to isolate osteoprogenitor cells (OPC) from BM mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) and test their capacity to proliferate and differentiate into osteoblasts. METHODS Human MSC were separated on a Percoll gradient and cultured in DMEM supplemented with 15% human serum, and characterized by flow cytometric analyzes for CD34, CD13, CD90, CD105 and CD117. To induce differentiation, cultured cells were exposed to 10(-7) m dexamethasone (dexa) and/or 10(-3) m sodium beta-glycerophosphate (beta-GlyP) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol) or 9-cis-retinoic acid (9-RA). RESULTS alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity was detected in cells irrespective of the dexa and/or beta-GlyP treatment. Antigenic phenotypes of MSC were CD34- (more than 99%) and CD13+ CD90+ CD105+ CD117+ (c. 50%). The treatment induced extracellular calcium deposition and gene and protein expression of osteonectin (ON) and bone sialoprotein (BSP): beta-GlyP induced an increase (c. 2.2-fold) of the ON gene and dexa augmented (c. 2.7-fold) the gene expression of BSP II. Gene expression of BSP I reached a maximum at 3 weeks of combined treatment. Osteocalcin gene expression was induced only after additional treatment with calcitriol or 9-RA. Ultrastructural analysis revealed the secretory phenotype of OPC. DISCUSSION Under appropriate treatment, MSC can give rise to OPC that have the capacity to differentiate into osteoblasts characterized by the expression of osteogenic markers, osteoblastic properties and stromal BM cells phenotypes. These cells may represent a promising material to be utilized in orthopedic cellular therapy.

Thein vivocalcification capacity of a copolymer, based on methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate, does not favor osteoconduction. J Biomed Mater Res A 2004; 69:584-9. Abstract
Polymers can be interesting alternatives to bone grafts; they must present suitable mechanical and osteoconductive properties. Biomimetic properties may be a key factor for the recognition by bone cells. Methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate (MOEP) was found to enhance hydroxyapatite deposition. The copolymer containing MOEP and 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (50-50%) binds large amounts of calcium. Particles of the copolymer were used to fill large cranial bone defects in the rat. After a 12-week healing period, the animals were euthanized and the skulls examined by X-ray, histology, and electron microscopy (EM). The high phosphate content of the polymer conferred a marked calcium-binding capacity, and the particles were heavily calcified. They were embedded in a light fibrous stroma containing numerous capillaries and multinucleated giant cells. The osteoconductive properties were poor: only few trabeculae developed centripetally from the margins of the defects. There was no bone bonding and no osteoblast on the surface of the calcified material. Backscattered EM revealed that the degree of calcification was homogeneous in all particles. Calcium-phosphorus calcospherites were never observed. The material appeared to trap calcium but to impair nucleation because only small hydroxyapatite tablets were occasionally observed. Polyphosphated materials do not represent a suitable source of potentially usable bone substitutes.

Abstract
Methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate is a methacrylic monomer used to modify different substrates by copolymerisation, in order to enhance hydroxyapatite deposition onto their surfaces. We report the synthesis of two copolymers series using increasing concentrations of methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate with (diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate and 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone. Reactivity ratios were evaluated for the two copolymer systems. The influence of phosphate content and distribution on the capacity to form a calcium-rich layer was evaluated after immersion for 15 days in a synthetic body fluid. Corresponding homopolymers were synthesised as controls. Calcium-phosphorus globules were developed only on samples containing (diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate, and presenting a low density of phosphate groups. The amounts of calcium increased when higher concentrations of methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate were used. The use of 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone was associated with greater calcium amounts, (compared to (diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate). The amine groups may favour the attraction of phosphorus, thus creating another way for the nucleation of calcium/phosphate crystals.

Abstract
UMP kinase from Escherichia coli is one of the four regulatory enzymes involved in the de novo biosynthetic pathway of pyrimidine nucleotides. This homohexamer, with no counterpart in eukarya, might serve as a target for new antibacterial drugs. Although the bacterial enzyme does not show sequence similarity with any other known nucleoside monophosphate kinase, two segments between amino acids 35 to 78 and 145 to 194 exhibit 28% identity with phosphoglycerate kinase and 30% identity with aspartokinase, respectively. Based on these similarities, a number of residues of E. coli UMP kinase were selected for site-directed mutagenesis experiments. Biochemical, kinetic, and spectroscopic analysis of the modified proteins identified residues essential for catalysis (Asp146), binding of UMP (Asp174), and interaction with the allosteric effectors, GTP and UTP (Arg62 and Asp77).

Abstract
Bone dermoid fibroma, described by Jaffe in 1958 is a benign fibroblastic tumour characterized by a remarkable tendency to expansion and to local recidives, without metastasizing. Some 38 cases have been reported to the present in the specialized literature. Two new cases are reported now, the first in the Romanian medical literature, one with localization of the tumour in the superior tibioperoneal metaphysis, and another located in the inferior femoral metaphysis. The first case recidivated after 3 surgical exereses over a period of nearly two years, and had to be amputated. The second case was solved by resection-arthrodesis of the Juvara-Merle d'Aubigne type, and is currently followed-up.

Abstract
Complex epidemiological investigations carried out in the affected zone, enabled the author to notice that familial endemic nephropathy (FEN) starts, in the population, as an asymptomatic renal involvement which affects all the age groups from the first decade to the ninth, its incidence increasing with age. Clinically, early renal involvement represents the "silent" form of disease, predominant in urinary syndrome carriers, while progressive renal insufficiency (PRI) appears only as a late and irreversible accident, less frequent than the urinary syndrome. To explain renal involvement, the author suggests the presence of an inflammatory process as an initial pathogenetic impulse, while immunological activation - under the influence of stress factors - would explain the appearance of PRI.

Abstract
The authors discuss, on the basis of 16 cases, the results obtained by the total denervation of the hip in the painful affections, of various origins, of this area. The best results have been obtained in painful coxarthroses secondary to luxating dysplasia of the hip, and the least satisfactory in the rheumatic affections.
