Examining the correlation of lymphangiogenesis biomarkers with clinical condition in Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Exp Eye Res 2024; 243:109891. [PMID: 38615832 DOI: 10.1016/j.exer.2024.109891] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/27/2023] [Revised: 04/01/2024] [Accepted: 04/11/2024] [Indexed: 04/16/2024]
Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and lymphangiogenesis biomarkers, namely LYVE-1, Podoplanin, VEGF-C, VEGFR-2 and VEGFR-3. This prospective and interventional study includes 30 patients with AMD which may be dry or wet type and 30 controls for whom vitrectomy and phacoemulsification was indicated due to additional pathologies (epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal detachment, and cataract). 0.1-0,2 ml of aqueous humor and 0.5-1 ml of vitreous sample was taken during the operations. Before the operations 1 tube serum was also taken. All the lymphangiogenesis biomarkers in the study are examined by ELISA method. LYVE-1 (p = 0.001) and Podoplanin (p = 0.004) levels in the vitreous for the patient group are found to be significantly lower than the control group. Serum (p = 0.019), vitreous (p = 0.001), aqueous (p < 0.001) levels of VEGF-C for the patient group are significantly higher than the control group. VEGF-C/VEGFR-2 (p < 0.001), VEGF-C/VEGFR-3 (p < 0.001) ratios in the vitreous for the patient group are found to be significantly higher than the control group. Especially in wet AMD patients, LYVE-1 level is significantly lower in the vitreous (p = 0.002) and aqueous (p = 0.002) than the control group. In addition, Podoplanin level is observed as significantly lower in the vitreous (p = 0.014) and serum (p = 0.002) in comparison to control group. In the wet AMD group, VEGF-C level in the vitreous (p < 0.001), aqueous (p < 0.001) and serum (p = 0.001) is higher than the control group. The result of this study indicates a valid relationship between the weakening of lymphangiogenesis and the pathophysiology of AMD, especially for the wet type. It is observed that the levels of receptors that bind VEGF-C (VEGFR-2 and VEGFR-3) do not increase at the same rate as VEGF-C to compensate for the increase in VEGF-C. The absence of an increase in VEGFR-3, which is especially necessary for lymphangiogenesis, also suggests that lymphangiogenesis is weakened or decreased in AMD. In the future interventional studies with larger series, examination of lymphangiogenic biomarkers in inflammatory retinal diseases and glaucoma may reveal unexplored details.

Blood pressure response to exercise in unaffected relatives of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease patients: an observational study. Int Urol Nephrol 2023; 55:2313-2319. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypertension is an early finding of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and is related to different mechanisms. Cyst expansion-related renin secretion or early endothelial dysfunctions are some of these hypotheses. In addition, the underlying genetic factor is thought to play a role in the inheritance of hypertension. The differential course of hypertension in ADPKD preoccupies that relatives of ADPKD patients may also be at risk for this underlying mechanisms with a genetically determined abnormal endothelial-vascular state. In this study, we aimed to evaluate blood pressure response to exercise as an initial vascular problem in unaffected and normotensive relatives of hypertensive ADPKD patients. METHODS This is an observational study including unaffected and normotensive relatives (siblings and children) of ADPKD patients (relative group) and healthy controls (control group) who performed an exercise stress test. A 6-lead electrocardiogram was recorded and blood pressure was measured automatically with a cuff worn on the right arm, immediately before the test and every 3 min during the exercise and the recovery phase. Participants continued the test until their age-specific target heart rate was reached or symptoms occurred that required discontinuation of the test. The highest blood pressure and pulse values during exercise were noted. In addition, as a marker for endothelial function, nitric oxide (NO) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) levels were measured at baseline and post-exercise. RESULTS There were 24 participants in the relative group (16 female, mean age 38.45 years) and 30 participants in the control group (15 female, mean age 37.96 years). Two groups were similar in terms of age, gender, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, resting systolic blood pressure (SBP)/diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and biochemical parameters. Mean SBP and DBP were similar in both groups during 1st, 3rd and 9th minutes of exercise (1st minute: 136.25 ± 19.71 mmHg vs 140.36 ± 30.79 mmHg for SBP, p = 0.607, 84.05 ± 14.75 mmHg vs 82.60 ± 21.60 mmHg for DBP, p = 0.799; 3rd minute: 150.75 ± 30.39 mmHg vs 148.54 ± 27.30 mmHg for SBP, p = 0.801, 98.95 ± 26.92 mmHg vs 85.92 ± 17.93 mmHg for DBP, p = 0.062; 9th minute: 156.35 ± 30.84 mmHg vs 166.43 ± 31.90 mmHg for SBP, p = 0.300, 96.25 ± 21.99 mmHg vs 101.78 ± 33.11 mmHg for DBP, p = 0.529 for control and relatives, respectively). During the recovery phase, SBP decreased in both groups in 6th minute (119.85 ± 14.06 mmHg vs 122.86 ± 16.76 mmHg, p = 0.538 for control and relatives respectively); however, in the relatives of ADPKD patients DBP remained high at the end of the 6th minute (78.95 ± 11.29 mmHg vs 86.67 ± 9.81 mmHg p = 0.025 for control and relatives, respectively). Baseline and post-exercise NO and ADMA levels were similar in both groups (Baseline p = 0.214 and p = 0.818, post-exercise p = 0.652 and p = 0.918 for NO and ADMA, respectively). CONCLUSION Abnormal blood pressure response to exercise was observed in unaffected normotensive relatives of ADPKD. Although its clinical significance needs to be demonstrated by additional research, it is an important finding that unaffected relatives of ADPKD may be at risk for an altered arterial vascular network. Furthermore, these data are the first to demonstrate that relatives of ADPKD patients may also be under risk with a genetically determined abnormal vascular state.

Nanoemulsions Containing Megestrol Acetate: Development, Characterization, and Stability Evaluation. AAPS PharmSciTech 2022; 23:142. Abstract
Many active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) are poorly soluble in water and their low oral bioavailability is a major hindrance to their potential use. Megestrol acetate (MGA) is insoluble in water and its oral absorption is limited and considerably affected by food. Nanoemulsions (NEs) can be used as effective oral drug delivery systems where the hydrophobic API is loaded into the oil phase. In this study, MGA-loaded NEs were prepared based on the spontaneous emulsification technique. The effects of different excipients such as ethanol, Tween 80, Lipoid E80, and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) on the NEs characterization were investigated. The experimental results indicated that optimum MGA-loaded NEs (F20) were nanometer-sized droplets (166.9 ± 3.0 nm) with negative zeta potential (-12.2 ± 1.1 mV). The effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on characteristic properties of F20 was also evaluated. On the selected NEs, in vitro dissolution tests and stability studies in various mediums and storage conditions were performed. The encapsulation efficiency of NEs were > 99%. The overall droplet size of F20 and PVP-2 (PVP-coated NEs) remained relatively stable as the pH changed from 1.2 to 6.8. It was determined that F20 and PVP-2 remained stable at 4°C until 12 weeks and had higher cytotoxicity on MCF-7 cells. To conclude, droplet size, surface charge, and stability are important properties for NEs to have sufficient effectiveness. In this study, alternative oral NEs of low-solubility drug MGA were developed considering the above features.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) are isoprene derived apolar molecules. While deficiencies of these vitamins have been associated with various diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cancer, high doses of Vitamin A and D can cause toxic effects. Accurate detection of serum levels of these vitamins have critical importance. In this study, it is aimed to develop and validate a sensitive and specific Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS / MS) method that allows simultaneous analysis of fat-soluble vitamins. MATERIALS AND METHODS Serum samples were deproteinized with methanol and chromatographic separation of analytes were performed by LC-MS/MS system (Agilent Technologies 6420 Triple Quadrapole LC-MS), Agilent Pursuit PFP column (100 mm × 3.0 mm; 3.0 μm), in gradient mode using Mobile phase A (milli-Q+0.1 % formic acid) and Mobile phase B (Methanol+0.1 % formic acid). Ion scan was performed in MRM (multiple reaction monitoring) mode with positive ion selectivity in ESI ion source. RESULTS The retention times were 6.93 min, 6.94 min and 9.34 min while concentrations were linear in the ranges between 10-150 ng/mL, 3-90 μg /dL and 6-90 μg/mL for 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25-OHD3), Vitamin A and Vitamin E, respectively. Inter-day Coefficient Variation (CV%) values for Vitamin A, Vitamin E and 25-OHD3 were; 9.08 %, 9.85 % and 3.07 % and intra-day CV% values were; 2.98 %, 5.05 % and 5.01 %. LOD and LOQ results were 2.11 μg/dL and 3.50 μg/dL for Vitamin A; 1.71 μg/mL and 2.45 μg/mL for Vitamin E; 1.47 ng/mL and 2.50 ng/mL for 25-OHD3, respectively. CONCLUSION In this study, a LC-MS/MS method that can analyze fat soluble vitamins in 13 min was developed and validated. This method will be useful for clinical purposes by replacing low specificity immunoassay methods and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) methods that can not allow simultaneous analysis.

Abstract
Background:Omentin is an anti-inflammatory adipokine, which plays important roles in the adjustments of glucose metabolism, cardiovascular homeostasis, atherosclerosis (1).Objectives:To investigate the omentin levels in Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) patients and to assess the association with markers of subclinical inflammation in FMF patients such as serum amyloid A (SAA), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP).Methods:This cross-sectional study included 54 consecutive adult FMF patients (27 male, 27 female) and 28 healthy individuals (16 male, 12 female). The demographic and clinical features and MEFV gene mutations were recorded. The FMF patients were separated into 3 groups: 1) attack-free group, 2) active attack group and 3) colchicine-resistant group. Serum omentin levels were compared between the FMF patients and the healthy control group. Results:Serum omentin and SAA levels were higher in the study group than in the control group (108.05(19.97-343.22) vs. 199.5(42.98-339.41) p<0.05, 3.69(1.18-22.75) vs. 1.31(0.95-3.16) p<0.001) (Table 1). When the FMF patients were examined as separate groups, serum omentin values were lower in the colchicine resistant group than in the groups without resistance (Table 2). Abstract
BACKGROUND Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a pathophysiologic condition of the retina due to abnormal proliferation of retinal vessels. OBJECTIVE The study aimed too ascertain the importance of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), interleukin-33 (IL-33) and endocan in the diagnosis and follow-up of ROP. METHODS This prospective cohort study was conducted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Health Science University, Zekai Tahir Burak Maternity Teaching Hospital, Ankara, Turkey, between February 2017 and August 2018. Preterm infants (gestational age (GA) of ≤32 weeks and birth weight of ≤1500 gr), diagnosed ROP were included in the study. VEGF, IGF-1, IL-33 and endocan levels were evaluated in the cord blood and in the serum before and after treatment of infants in the ROP and control groups. RESULTS A final number of 146 infants were included in the study. During the study period, 73 infants were identified as the ROP group, and 73 infants were allocated as the control group. In the ROP group, the cord blood VEGF value was higher than the control group (p <0.05). However, IGF-1 levels in the cord blood were lower in the ROP group than control (P<0.05). IL-33 and endocan values in the cord blood were similar in both control and ROP groups (p>0.05). Although serum levels of IL-33, VEGF and endocan were higher before laser treatment, these biomarkers decreased significantly after laser treatment (p <0.05). CONCLUSION We determined that serum IL-33 and endocan levels might be suggested as sensitive novel markers for the prediction of severe ROP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the medical and the surgical treatment on the olfactory functions, clinical scoring systems and inflammation markers in patients with nasal polyposis. In addition, the secondary aim was to investigate the correlation between those investigated parameters. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 30 patients, who completed the standardized medical and surgical treatment and also came to 3 months of follow-ups regularly after the surgery, were included in the study. The Sniffin' Sticks olfactory tests, radiological and the endoscopic stagings, liver-expressed chemokine (CCL16) and endothelin (ET) levels and sino-nasal outcome test-22 (SNOT-22) were performed at the initial and at the end of the study. RESULTS The current study had four major findings: (1) significant improvement in odor functions after treatment was determined; however, the majority of the patients had been already hyposmic. (2) In addition, significant improvement was found in ET and CCL16 levels, SNOT-22 results, and radiologic and endoscopic stagings at the end of the study. (3) However, there was no correlation between the olfactory functions and the investigated parameters. (4) There was a positive correlation between polyp recurrence and ET levels. CONCLUSION The standardized medical and surgical treatment provided a significant improvement in the olfactory functions. However, only one patient (3.3%) had become normosmic at the end of the study.

Abstract
AIM The aims of the study are to investigate serum neopterin and ischemia modified albumin (IMA) levels in patients with immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV) and evaluate the association of these markers with disease activity and relapse. METHOD Thirty-four consecutive adult patients (24 male and 10 female) admitted to the rheumatology clinic and met the IgAV American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Demographic and clinical features of IgAV and a control group were recorded into a predefined protocol. Disease activity was categorized as "remission" or "active" according to Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVAS). BVAS ≥ 1 was accepted as "active". Serum neopterin levels, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and IMA were evaluated according to BVAS and compared to the healthy control group. RESULTS Serum median (interquartile range) neopterin, IMA levels and hsCRP were higher in the study group than in control group (2.01 [12.5] ng/mL vs 1.77 [1.37] ng/mL, 0.67 [0.2] ng/mL vs. 0.43 [0.17] ng/mL, 5.6 [17.1] mg/L vs. 1.55 [1.6] mg/L, P = .095, P < .001 and P = .002, respectively). When evaluated according to BVAS, IMA and hsCRP levels were significantly higher in the group with active disease (0.77 [0.12] vs 0.61 [0.13] and 14.85 [4.6], P = .009 and P = .03, respectively). Serum neopterin levels were significantly higher in the active group compared to BVAS (18.95 [32.36] vs 1.63 [1.48], P < .001). CONCLUSION Oxidative stress is important in IgAV pathogenesis. Roles of hsCRP, neopterin and IMA as potential markers of diagnosis and disease activity seem to be worth studying in future studies with larger study groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the relationship between disease activity and vaspin, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and apolipoprotein levels in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). BACKGROUND Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis, which is related with psoriasis. Adipokines are the mediators which play a role in metabolic homeostasis and inflammatory conditions. METHODS The levels of vaspin, NGAL, apolipoproteins and their correlations with disease activity were compared in 50 psoriatic arthritis patients and 36 healthy controls. RESULTS The levels of vaspin, NGAL and apolipoprotein B/A1 ratio were significantly higher in the patient group (p 0.05). CONCLUSION This is the first study to have compared vaspin and NGAL levels in patients with PsA. Vaspin and NGAL can be used as a biomarker in PsA. Vaspin, NGAL and dyslipoproteinemia are not correlated with disease activity (Tab. 3, Ref. 63).

Abstract
Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is an important clinical problem for premature infants. Previously, some biomarkers associated with severity of BPD have been studied. In our study, we aimed to investigate the value of interleukin-33 (IL-33) levels as a new biomarker in the follow-up of BPD severity and response to treatment. Materials and Methods: Premature infants of <32 weeks of gestational age and birth weight <1,500 g were included in the study. Infants with BPD were divided into moderate and severe BPD groups. Infants without BPD were assigned as the control group. Cord blood samples were taken from both groups immediately after birth. In addition, blood samples were obtained at the time of diagnosis of BPD and after the end of hydrocortisone (HC) treatment to measure IL-33 values in the serum. Results: During the study period, a total of 192 infants were eligible: 96 infants in the BPD group and 96 in the control group. Cord IL-33 values were similar between control (1.29 ± 0.68 pg/mL) and BPD (moderate/severe) (1.31 ± 0.84 pg/mL) groups (P = 0.813). The levels of IL-33 were higher in BPD group (3.43 ± 0.98 pg/mL) than in the control group (0.98 ± 0.51 pg/mL) (P < 0.001). IL-33 values decreased significantly after HC treatment (pretreatment: 3.43 ± 0.98 pg/mL versus post-treatment: 2.97 ± 0.28 pg/mL) (P < 0.001). In addition, IL-33 levels were significantly higher in severe BPD (3.91 ± 1.22 pg/mL) than in moderate BPD (2.82 ± 0.74) group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Although the IL-33 level was not predictive of the development of BPD immediately after birth, it may be used as a new biomarker to diagnose, monitor, and follow the response to treatment of BPD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Endocan levels were found to be associated with severity and mortality of the respiratory system diseases. OBJECTIVE We aimed to figure out whether endocan was an important marker for the diagnosis, severity and follow-up of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). MATERIALS AND METHODS Infants with moderate/severe BPD, and who required hydrocortisone treatment were included in the study group. Infants without BPD were allocated in the control group. Endocan levels were compared between the control group and the study group, and before and after the treatment in the study group. RESULTS A total of 148 infants, 74 infants in the control group and 74 infants in the BPD group, were included. The endocan level was higher in the BPD group than in the control group (P = .001). Endocan levels before treatment in the BPD group was found to be higher than endocan level after treatment (P = .021). CONCLUSION Our study found that endocan levels increased in moderate/severe BPD. Serum endocan levels may be a safe and novel indicator for the follow-up of response to treatment and the prognosis of the severity of the disease.

Evaluation of Cases of Graft Nephrectomy After Graft Loss in Patients With Renal Transplantation. Transplant Proc 2018; 50:3445-3448. [PMID: 30577219 DOI: 10.1016/j.transproceed.2018.07.030] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/30/2018] [Revised: 07/03/2018] [Accepted: 07/18/2018] [Indexed: 10/28/2022]
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Renal transplantation is undoubtedly considered the best renal replacement therapy. Graft nephrectomy can be performed in patients with renal transplantation because of complications associated with the failed graft. We aimed to retrospectively investigate the characteristics of patients who underwent graft nephrectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between January 2000 and November 2013, the records of 757 patients who had renal transplantation in Ege University Faculty of Medicine Hospital Nephrology-Transplantation outpatient clinic were examined. Sixty-four patients who underwent graft nephrectomy were included in the study. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the timing of graft nephrectomy. The group of 30 patients who underwent graft nephrectomy in the first 56 days after the renal transplantation was referred to as the "early group" and the group of 34 patients who underwent graft nephrectomy after 56 days was referred to as "late group." RESULTS In our study, we found the body mass index to be significantly higher in those with early graft loss (P = .02). We found that there was a difference between the groups in terms of sex (P = .012). When the mortality and morbidity rates after graft nephrectomy were examined, mortality was observed in 3 of the 64 patients in the study and morbidity in 1 patient. CONCLUSION According to our study, the body mass indices and ages of the subjects who need early graft nephrectomy are higher. However, male sex was significantly more prevalent in patients who underwent graft nephrectomy in the late period compared with the early period.

Abstract
Objectives: To ascertain the diagnostic value of endocan and interleukin (IL)-33 in infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and to compare their effectiveness with C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6).Methods: Eighty-four preterm infants including control (n = 42) and NEC (n = 42) were eligible. Blood samples were obtained from infants in the NEC for the assessment of CRP, IL-6, endocan, and IL-33 serum levels at the time of diagnosis (first day), at the third and seventh days of NEC. Endocan, IL-33, CRP, and IL-6 serum levels were measured at the 14th day of life in the control group. Results: Serum levels of endocan, IL-33, CRP, and IL-6 were significantly higher in the NEC group compared to the control group at the first, third, and seventh days (p < .05). IL-33 and endocan levels continued to rise in the consequent days in patients with stage III NEC (p < .05). Serum endocan and IL-33 levels gradually increased in patients who underwent surgery (p < .05). Serum endocan levels were higher in patients with stage III NEC than those in the stage II NEC at the diagnosis. Conclusions: Serum levels of IL-33 and endocan can be used as markers in the diagnosis and follow-up of NEC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The structural and compositional changes in the myocardium seem to have a major role in the development of heart failure (HF).Imbalance between production and degradation in extracellular collagen results in increase of collagen synthesis biomarkers in the circulation as the carboxy-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PIP). Here we aimed to determine role of PIP in the diagnosis of chronic HF. MATERIAL AND METHODS 87 patients with HF group and 80 healthy subjects were enrolled into the study. Echocardiographic examination was performed. At the beginning of the study, serum B type natriuretic peptide (BNP), PIP, high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured . The subjects were followed for one year then after. RESULTS Average PIP value of HF group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.001). Both hs-CRP and BNP values were well correlated to PIP values (p < 0.001). In the HF group, PIP value of patients who died at the end of one year was similar to that of patients who survived at the end of first year. CONCLUSION PIP may not mirror acute events in follow-up of chronic heart failure but it is a very beneficial biomarker in diagnosis of low-LVEF heart failure with high sensitivity and specificity (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 16).

The relationship of serum VEGF and sVEGFR-1 levels with vascular involvement in patients with Behçet's disease. Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation 2018; 78:443-449. [PMID: 30015524 DOI: 10.1080/00365513.2018.1488179] [Citation(s) in RCA: 8] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 12/14/2022]
Abstract
Behçet's disease (BD) is a rare, chronic, inflammatory disorder characterized by multisystemic vasculitis including mucocutaneous, neurologic, and ophthalmic involvement. Our aim is to compare vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (sVEGFR-1) levels in BD, among the patients having or not having organ involvement, disease activation and especially vascular involvement. Fifty-five patients with BD, 25 of which were accompanied by vascular involvement, and 31 control subjects were included in the study. Disease activity was assessed with the Turkish version of Behçet Disease Current Activity Form (BDCAF) and active vasculitis lesions at the time of study were recorded. Age at diagnosis was 32.2 ± 4.6, while the mean duration of BD was 96.3 (72.3) months. The median for BDCAF score was 2.0 (range 0, 3.0), and 29 (52%) of patients had active BD. The serum VEGF and sVEGFR-1 levels in patients with BD were significantly higher than that in controls [(298 (338.5) pg/mL; 93 (93.5) pg/mL in patients and 136.2 (73) pg/mL; 56.5 (48.5) pg/mL in controls, respectively, p < .001 for both values] while difference in VEGF/sVEGFR-1 ratio was obtained close to borderline of significance (p = .03). Our study is the first report indicating elevated serum VEGF, sVEGFR-1, and more importantly VEGF/sVEGFR-1 ratio could play an important role in the development of trombosis in BD. VEGF and/or sVEGFR-1 should not be evaluated independently in the same patient group and the ratio of these two parameters is a more important indicator, especially in the evaluation of BD especially with vascular involvement together with the duration of disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the effect of anxiety and depression scores of couples who underwent Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) on pregnancy outcomes. METHOD This study was conducted as a prospective and comparative study with 217 couples. The study data was collected by using a semi-structured questionnaire and the Turkish version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The questionnaire, STAI and BDI were applied to couples who initiated ART treatment. Couples' state anxiety scores were re-evaluated after embryo transfer (ET). RESULTS A significant relationship was found between the depression score of women and pregnancy outcome (p < 0.05). It was determined that anxiety scores for both men and women were higher before the ART procedure, but their anxiety scores decreased after ET (p < 0.05). Spouses of women with a negative pregnancy outcome had higher trait and state anxiety mean scores (p > 0.05) and lower depression scores (p <0.05) than spouses of women with a positive pregnancy outcome. CONCLUSION Study results indicated that the anxiety and depression scores of couples who had achieved a positive pregnancy result were lower than for couples with a negative result. The results of this study will contribute to the health professionals especially to the nurses who spend the most time with couples in providing consulting services and supporting psychological status of couples during ART process in Turkey.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between an increase in arterial stiffness and the development of left ventricular hypertrophy in essential hypertension patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred forty essential hypertension patients were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups based on echocardiographic measurements; with left ventricular hypertrophy (n=70) and without left ventricular hypertrophy (n=70). The criterion for hypertrophy was accepted as an intraventricular septum and posterior wall thickness in diastole of 11 mm or above. Aortic stiffness values of the patients groups were measured noninvasively by arteriography through the brachial artery. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurements were used as indicators of arterial stiffness. RESULTS When compared to the group without left ventricular hypertrophy, elevated systolic blood pressure, mean blood pressure, and pulse pressure were located in the left ventricular hypertrophy group at a significant level (p > 0.01). A statistically significant difference was not observed in the diastolic blood pressure and pulse measurements of the groups. Pulse wave velocity, the indicator of arterial stiffness, was elevated to a significant degree in the left ventricular hypertrophy group (p > 0.01). While a positive correlation was found between pulse wave velocity and left ventricle mass index, microalbuminuria, high sensitive C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP), and left ventricle end-diastolic volume, a negative correlation was found between pulse wave propagation velocity and left ventricle E/A. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, pulse wave analysis is a valuable method for predicting cardiac hypertrophy in essential hypertension (Tab. 6, Ref. 25).

A decreased serum omentin-1 level may be an independent risk factor for peripheral arterial disease. INT ANGIOL 2014; 33:455-460. [PMID: 25294287] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 06/03/2023]
Abstract
AIM Recent evidence suggests that omentin-1, a visceral adipose-derived cytokine, may play a role in atherosclerosis The aim of this study was to evaluate whether serum omentin-1 levels are associated with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and its severity. METHODS The present study was cross-sectional and observational. We enrolled 123 patients with PAD and 50 age-matched subjects without PAD. The cardiovascular risk factors, ankle-brachial index (ABI), and serum omentin-1 levels were assessed in all participants RESULTS Patients with PAD had significantly lower omentin-1 levels than those without PAD (206. ±48.4 vs. 345. ±80 ng/mL, respectively; 0.001). A correlation analysis revealed positive correlations between the omentin-1 level and the ABI ( 0.52, P=0.008). After adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors, a decreased omentin-1 level was found to be an independent predictor of both PAD and its severity as measured by ABI in multivariate logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSION The current study suggests a strong association between decreased serum omentin-1 levels and PAD and its severity. Thus, omentin-1 may be a novel biomarker for PAD.
