Elucidating the Changes in Molecular Structure at the Buried Interface of RTV Silicone Elastomers during Curing

Silicone elastomers are widely used in many industrial applications, including coatings, adhesives, and sealants. Room-temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone, a major subcategory of silicone elastomers, undergoes molecular structural transformations during condensation curing, which affect their mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. The role of reactive hydroxyl (-OH) groups in the curing reaction of RTV silicone is crucial but not well understood, particularly when multiple sources of hydroxyl groups are present in a formulated product. This work aims to elucidate the interfacial molecular structural changes and origins of interfacial reactive hydroxyl groups in RTV silicone during curing, focusing on the methoxy groups at interfaces and their relationship to adhesion. Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy is an in situ nondestructive technique used in this study to investigate the interfacial molecular structure of select RTV formulations at the buried interface at different levels of cure. The primary sources of hydroxyl groups required for interfacial reactions in the initial curing stage are found to be those on the substrate surface rather than those from the ingress of ambient moisture. The silylation treatment of silica substrates eliminates interfacial hydroxyl groups, which greatly impact the silicone interfacial behavior and properties (e.g., adhesion). This study establishes the correlation between interfacial molecular structural changes in RTV silicones and their effect on adhesion strength. It also highlights the power of SFG spectroscopy as a unique tool for studying chemical and structural changes at RTV silicone/substrate interface in situ and in real time during curing. This work provides valuable insights into the interfacial chemistry of RTV silicone and its implications for material performance and application development, aiding in the development of improved silicone adhesives.

Carbon Black-Filled Polymer Blends: A Scanning Probe Microscopy Characterization

Conducting polymer composites, that consist of a conducting filler randomly distributed throughout an insulating polymer or polymer blend, attract interest in several application fields such as sensors or electromagnetic radiation shielding. The macroscopic electrical resistivity of the filled polyblend strongly depends on the localization of the filler. Here, we investigate the morphology of Carbon Black (CB)-filled polymer blends in order to determine the parameters governing the selective localization of CB in one phase of the blend components or at the interface between the components. The dispersion of the CB particles in the polymer blend is observed by means of Lateral Force Microscopy (LFM) as a function of the blend composition and the load in C.B. The selective localization of CB at the interface enables the reduction of the percolation threshold down to 0.5 wt%; as a result, the mechanical properties of the polymer blend can be fully retained. Different techniques can be used to locate the CB at the interface; we compare their efficiency experimentally.

Competition for H2 between sulfate reducers, methanogens and homoacetogens in a gas-lift reactor

Reported values for growth kinetic parameters show an order in competitivity of heterotrophic sulfate reducing bacteria>methanogens>homoacetogens for the substrate hydrogen. This order suggests that methanogens can succesfully compete with consortia of heterotrophic SRB and homoacetogens when H2/CO2 is present as sole substrate. However, we found in experiments using gas-lift reactors inoculated with anaerobic sludge and fed with H2/CO2 and sulfate, that heterotrophic sulfate reduction rapidly and completely outcompeted methanogenesis, whereas a low amount of acetate was formed. Thus, in disagreement with the above competitivity order, hydrogen is more readily consumed by homoacetogenesis than by methanogenesis, indicating that the competition is not kinetically determined. The superior settling velocity of sulfidogenic-acetogenic sludge compared to that of methanogenic sludge suggests that the former sludge is better retained, which can explain the predominance of sulfate reduction/homoacetogenesis over methanogenesis.

Electrical Conductivity of Polystyrene-Rubber Blends Loaded with Carbon Black

Polystyrene/rubber blends have been loaded with carbon black (CB) and the filler localization in the two-phase polyblends has been studied in relation to the chemical structure of the rubber. The CB localization and the electrical conductivity are greatly influenced by the substitution of the rubber chains. In polystyrene/polybutadiene blends, the filler is localized within the polybutadiene phase. In contrast, in polystyrene/polyisoprene and polystyrene/ethylene—propylene rubber (EPM) blends, CB is mainly localized at the interface, so that the CB percolation threshold in cocontinuous two-phase polyblends is dramatically decreased.
