Compound erosion effect of snowmelt, wind, and rainfall on sloping farmlands of Chinese typical Mollisol region

Research on the processes and mechanisms of compound soil erosion by multiple forces can provide scientific guidance for precisely controlling cropland soil erosion. Based on the seasonal alternation of freezing-thawing, snowmelt, wind, and rainfall erosion forces on sloping farmlands under natural conditions from November to next October of each year, we used a set of indoor simulation experiments of multi-force superimpositions to analyze the compound soil erosion processes of snowmelt (1 and 2 L·min-1), wind (12 m·s-1), and rainfall (100 mm·h-1). We further discussed the erosion effects of multi-force superimpositions. The results showed that, under single snowmelt erosion, an increase in snowmelt flow had a greater effect on sloping snowmelt erosion intensity than that of sloping runoff rate. When sloping snowmelt flow increased from 1 L·min-1 to 2 L·min-1, sloping runoff rate and erosion intensity increased by 2.7 and 4.0 times, respectively. Under snowmelt-wind superimposition erosion, previous sloping snowmelt erosion inhibited late wind erosion occurrence. As sloping snowmelt flow increased from 1 L·min-1 to 2 L·min-1, the inhibiting action subsequently increased and wind erosion intensity caused by previous snowmelt reduced by more than 50%. Both wind erosion and snowmelt-wind superimposed erosion intensified late rainfall erosion. The early wind erosion increased rainfall erosion by 24.5%. The snowmelt-wind superimposed effect increased the later slope rainfall erosion by 132.8% and 465.4% under 1 and 2 L·min-1 snowmelt runoff rates, respectively. The compound soil erosion amount driven by multiple force superimposition was not the sum of the corresponding erosion amount caused by single erosion force, with promoting or inhibiting effects of erosion force superimposition. The erosion effect of snowmelt-wind superposition was negative, but that of wind-rainfall superposition and snowmelt-wind-rainfall superpositions were positive.

[Impacts of seepage flow and soil thaw depth on hillslope snowmelt erosion in Chinese Mollisol region]

Snowmelt erosion is an important way of soil loss in Chinese Mollisol region. However, little is known about the effects of seepage flow and soil thaw depth on hillslope snowmelt runoff erosion. An indoor simulated experiment was conducted to analyze the impacts of seepage flow and soil thaw depth on hillslope snowmelt erosion. There were two snowmelt flow rates (1 and 4 L·min^-1), two soil thaw depths (5 and 10 cm), and two near-surface hydrological conditions (with and without seepage flow). The results showed that hillslope runoff depth and soil erosion amount in the treatment with seepage flow were 1.1 to 1.2 times and 1.3 to 1.9 times of those in the treatment without seepage flow, respectively. Under two snowmelt flow rates, when soil thaw depth increased from 5 cm to 10 cm, hillslope runoff depth and soil erosion amount increased by 10.0% to 13.5% and 15.4% to 37.1% in the treatment without seepage flow, respectively. In the treatment with seepage flow, when soil thaw depth shifted from 5 cm to 10 cm, hillslope runoff depth increased by 6.5% to 8.5%, and soil erosion amount remained stable. Moreover, hillslope rill development was comprehensively influenced by seepage flow, soil thaw depth, and snowmelt flow rate, with rill erosion amount occupying more than 72% of hillslope snowmelt erosion amount. Compared with the treatment without seepage flow, flow velocity and shear stress under the treatment with seepage flow increased by 20.3% to 23.2% and 37.0% to 51.3%, respectively; but Darcy-Weisbach friction coefficient reduced by 9.0% to 21.4%, which caused an increase of hillslope snowmelt erosion. In addition, seepage flow enhanced rill development, which caused rill erosion amount to increase by 43.6% to 69.9% compared with the treatment without seepage flow, and it further resulted in the increase of hillslope snowmelt erosion amount. The main reason for soil thaw depth enhancing hillslope snowmelt erosion amount under the treatment without seepage flow was that both sloping runoff erosivity and erodible materials increased with increasing soil thaw depth. Furthermore, soil thaw depth had a significant impact on hillslope rill morphology development under the treatment with seepage flow. Rill widening process was dominated when soil thaw depth was 5 cm, whereas rill incision process was dominant when soil thaw depth was 10 cm. This study could improve the understanding of hillslope snowmelt erosion mechanism in Chinese Mollisol region and provide theoretical guidance for the development of water erosion model.

Influence of acidified drinking water on growth performance and gastrointestinal function of broilers

The ban on the use of antibiotic feed additives as growth promoters compelled the researchers for exploring the future utility of other alternatives. This experiment was designed to evaluate the effect of acidified drinking water on growth performance, gastrointestinal pH, digestive enzymes, intestinal histomorphology, and cecum microbial counting of the broiler chicken. A total of 540 one-day-old male broilers (Arbor Acre) were randomly assigned to 5 treatments, with 6 replicates of 18 chicks per replicate. Broilers received diets and water as follows: NC (negative control, basal diet, normal water), PC (positive control, basal diet + 8 ppm colistin sulfate + 8 ppm enduracidin, normal water), A1 (basal diet, continuous supply of acidified water during whole experiment period), A2 (basal diet, intermittent acidification of water during 0 to 14 d, 22 to 28 d, and 36 to 42 d), and A3 [basal diet, intermittent acidification of water (24 h/d from 0 to 14 d and from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on d 15 to 42)]. During the entire period, the acidified groups (A1, A2, and A3) and PC group showed improve on weight gain, average daily gain and feed conversion ratio compared to NC group (P < 0.05). The pH in crop, proventriculus and ileum at 43 d declined by 0.04, 1.03, 1.23; 0.55, 0.69, 0.70; and 0.63, 0.74, 1.21 in A1, A2, and A3 group, respectively. There was a significant decline of lipase activity in the PC and acidified groups compared to NC group. The A2 group had higher villus height in jejunum than NC group. The PC and acidified groups reduced (P < 0.05) the total aerobic bacteria count of cecum when contrasted to NC group. Therefore, we conclude that acidified drinking water can improve growth performance, compensate for gastric acidity, and control pathogenic bacteria in broilers and may be considered as a potential alternative to improve production parameters. Discontinuous supply of acidified water had the same or even better influence on broilers compared to continuous supply.

Identification of 19 loci for reproductive traits in a local Chinese chicken by genome-wide study

Reproductive traits have long been studied and have an important influence on chicken breeding. To identify quantitative trait loci affecting reproductive traits, a genome-wide analysis of a Chinese chicken breed was performed to analyze age at first egg body weight at first egg, first egg weight, egg weight at the age of 300 days, egg weight at the age of 462 days, egg number at the age of 300 days, egg number between the ages of 300 and 462 days and egg number at the age of 462 days. Nineteen SNPs related to reproductive traits were presented (P < 1.80E-6). Nine of the 19 SNPs had a significant effect on BWF, six SNPs were significantly associated with egg weight, and four SNPs were significantly associated with egg number. These SNPs were located near to or in 17 genes including FAM184B, HTT, KCNH7, CDC42BPA, KCNIP4, GJA5, CBFB, and GPC6. The present results may be beneficial for reproductive research and may be used in marker-assisted selection in future studies. These results could potentially benefit further breeding programs, especially in Jinghai Yellow Chicken.

Genome-wide association study on reproductive traits in Jinghai Yellow Chicken

To identify molecular markers and candidate genes associated with reproductive traits, a genome-wide analysis was performed in Jinghai Yellow Chickens to analyze body weight at first oviposition (BWF), age at first oviposition (AFE), weight of the egg at first oviposition (FEW), egg weight at the age of 300 days (EW300), number of eggs produced by 300 days of age (EN300), egg hatchability (HA) and multiple selection index for egg production (MSI). The results showed that seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were associated with reproductive traits (P<1.80E-6, Bonferroni correction). The P-values of the seven SNPs were 5.62E-10, 3.45E-08, 9.76E-07, 8.90E-07, 1.12E-06, 1.42E-07 and 1.48E-07, respectively. These SNPs were located in close proximity to or within the sequence of the five candidate genes, including FAM184B, TTL, RGS1, FBLN5 and PCNX. An additional 46 SNPs that could be associated with reproductive traits were identified (P<3.59E-5, Bonferroni correction). Identification of the candidate genes as well as genome-wide SNPs that may be associated with reproductive traits will greatly advance the understanding of the genetic basis and molecular mechanisms underlying reproductive traits and may have practical significance in breeding programs for the improvements of reproductive traits in the Jinghai Yellow Chicken.

miR-499A>G rs3746444 and miR-146aG>C expression and hepatocellular carcinoma risk in the Chinese population

We conducted a case-control study of a possible association of miR-499A>G rs3746444 and miR-146aG>C rs2910164 with risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. Samples from 172 hepatocellular carcinoma patients and 185 cancer-free controls were collected from October 2008 to December 2011. PCR-RFLP analysis was performed to determine the polymorphisms in each individual. The MAFs of miR-146aG>C and miR-499A>G in controls were similar to that known from the SNP database, and frequencies of genotypes in controls were in line with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. We found that miR-499 AG was significantly associated with decreased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma when compared with miR-499 AA genotype (adjusted odds ration = 0.74, 95% confidence interval = 0.24-0.96). However, subjects carrying miR-146a GG had a non-significant 0.62-fold decreased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. We did not find a significant association of miR-146aG>C rs2910164 and miR-499A>G rs3746444 polymorphisms with hepatocellular carcinoma risk in the Chinese population. Further investigations are warranted to clarify the relationship between miRNA polymorphisms and susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma risk in various ethnic populations.

Animal model of coronary artery spasm-coronary thrombosis-acute myocardial infarction. A study on hemodynamics, EKG, coronary angiography, biochemistry and pathology

An animal model of coronary artery spasm-coronary thrombosis-acute myocardial infarction (CAS-CATH-AMI) was obtained by injecting ergonovine(0.22 mg/kg) directly into the left coronary artery (LCA) of 17 dogs under general anesthesia. Various parameters of the experimental group were compared with those of the control group consisting of 5 dogs. The following changes were observed: increased average arterial blood pressure (MAP), pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP), stroke volume (SV, P less than 0.05), PAP (P less than 0.01) transient decreased cardiac output (CO); elevated ST-T in EKG; ventricular arrhythmia in 60% of animals; transient spasm of 50%-75% of LCA in the LCA angiographs; enhancement of platelet aggregation and TXB2 (P less than 0.01) and decline of 6 Keto-PGF1 alpha, SAO2 (P less than 0.05), indicating acute hypoxia and high coagulating pathophysiological changes after CAS. Pathological examination one hour after CAS induction revealed CATH(53%) in addition to CAS induced morphological changes of the CA and myocardium, as well as necrosis of the corresponding sites in its early stage. This study provides a reproducible animal model of CAS-CATH-AMI for research of coronary heart disease and pathomorphological criteria for the diagnosis of CAS. It also shows that CAS may lead to CATH-AMI, therefore, prevention of CATH and AMI is possible.

[Glomus tumor of the stomach--a case report on a light and electron microscopic study]

This paper reports a case of glomus tumor of stomach from a male patient, 58 years old, with the chief complaint of nausea and vomiting after meal. This tumor was at the anterior wall of the antrum near the lesser curvature. By light microscopy, it was composed of glomus tumor cells and abundant blood vessels. Ultrastructurally, there were numerous filaments, dense bodies, adhesive bodies and pinocytotic vesicles in the cytoplasm. This kind of tumor should be differentiated from the leiomyoblastoma and hemangiopericytoma.

[Pulmonary oncocytic carcinoid--a case report]

A pulmonary oncocytic carcinoid arising from the medial basal segment of the right lung is presented. The abundant oncocytic granules in the cytoplasm were observed by light-microscope. The ultrastructure by electronmicroscope showed that these granules originated from the hyperplasia of mitochondria, and there were membrane-bordered electric dense core granules (neuro-secretive granule) in the cytoplasm of this tumor. According to the morphological features observed by light and electronmicroscope, this tumor is considered as a subtype of bronchial carcinoid and belongs to the APUD system which should be differentiated from the metastatic tumor, the granular cell myoblastoma and the chemodectoma of lung.
