ARE THERE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE BADMINTON ATHLETES IN SLEEP, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SEDENTARY TIME?

ABSTRACT Introduction: High-performance athletes often undergo periods of exhaustive training and insufficient recovery, which can lead to decreased performance, but it is not clear whether there are any differences between the sexes in the level of habitual physical activity, sedentary time or sleep quantity and quality in young highly trained badminton athletes. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the habitual physical activity (PA), sedentary time and sleep quantity and quality of highly trained young male and female badminton athletes and non-athletes. Methods: Twenty-seven young badminton athletes and twenty-one non-athletes (control group) were recruited. Sleep duration and quality (total time in bed, total sleep time, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency and latency), total counts, vigorous activity time and sedentary time were measured using a tri-axial accelerometer. Results: Male athletes spent less sedentary time (p=0.028), more time in vigorous activity (p=0.016) and had higher total counts (p<0.001) than the male control group. There were no significant differences in sedentary time (p=0.702) or vigorous activity time (p=0.205) between the female athletes and non-athletes, but the female athletes accumulated higher total counts than the female control group (p=0.003). There were no significant differences between the sexes or groups for time in bed, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, wake after sleep onset and latency (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Among males but not females, young highly trained badminton athletes had less sedentary time and more time in vigorous activity than the non-athletes, however, there were no significant differences between the sexes or groups in sleep quantity and quality. COVID-19 pandemic impacts physical activity levels and sedentary time but not sleep quality in young badminton athletes

Purpose

Regular physical activity is a good strategy to maintain the health of athletes, and prevent pain and decreased joint flexibility during the pandemic. On the other hand, higher sedentary time during the pandemic period can have deleterious effects. The objective of this study was to compare physical activity levels, sedentary time, and sleep parameters during the pre-COVID period and the COVID-19 pandemic period in young badminton athletes.

Methods

Fifteen young badminton athletes were evaluated during a pre-COVID period (July 2019) and during the COVID-19 period (July 2020). Sleep parameters, physical activity level, and sedentary time were measured using a tri-axial accelerometer. Participants wore the accelerometer on their dominant wrist for 7 days consecutively. In addition, the average of each sleep parameter [time in bed and total sleep time in hours per day, sleep efficiency (%), wake after sleep onset (WASO, total per day), and sleep latency (minutes per day)] was reported over the 7-day period.

Results

Athletes presented increased sedentary time (pre-COVID = 7.0 ± 1.1 vs.COVID-19 = 8.9 ± 1.9 h/day, p = 0.004, d = 1.30) and significant decreases in the total PA observed in counts per day (pre-COVID = 2,967,064.4 ± 671,544.1 vs. COVID-19 = 1,868,210.2 ± 449,768.4 counts/day, p = 0.001, d = 1.99), time in vigorous PA (pre-COVID = 7.7 ± 0.9 vs. COVID-19 = 6.1 ± 1.2 h/day, p = 0.001, d = 1.56), and time in moderate-to-vigorous PA (pre-COVID = 8.1 ± 0.9 vs. COVID-19 = 6.5 ± 1.3 h/day, p = 0.001, d = 1.48). There were no significant differences for time in light and moderate PA or in sleep parameters (p > 0.05).

Conclusion

Young badminton athletes presented increased sedentary time, and decreased total physical activity, time in MVPA, and time in vigorous activities during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the pre-COVID period, however, there were no significant differences in sleep parameters.

Acute effect of high-intensity interval training on metabolic and inflammatory markers in obese and overweight adolescents: Pilot study

It is still unclear whether a high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) protocol is effective for promoting anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic responses. The objective of this study was to analyze the acute effects of HIIE on inflammatory and metabolic responses in obese and overweight girls and boys. Initially, the body composition of 19 sedentary volunteers was evaluated. The participants completed an interval experimental run on a treadmill (2:1 min at 95% maximum velocity, totaling ~3 km) and blood samples were collected at rest and immediately after the exercise protocol. Serum was analyzed for interleukins 6 and 10 (IL-6 and IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), cortisol, glucose, triacylglycerol (TG), non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), and the lipoprotein profile. Under baseline conditions, the groups of boys and girls exhibited differences in the anthropometry measures for fat-free mass ( p = 0.011), gynoid fat ( p = 0.002), visceral fat ( p = 0.004), and glucose ( p = 0.031). After the exercise session, cholesterol, glucose, NEFA, PAI-1, IL-10, and TNF-α did not demonstrate effects for time, group, or interaction under the different conditions. Cortisol (F = 9.018; p = 0.008; partial η2 = 0.347), TG (F = 25.189; p < 0.0001; partial η2 = 0.597), and IL-6 levels (F = 6.543; p = 0.020; partial η2 = 0.278) showed an effect for time. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that HIIE promoted an immune-endocrine response, increasing cortisol and IL-6 levels immediately after the exercise protocol in overweight and obese girls.

Brazilian Photographic Figure Rating Scale: Development and Psychometric Investigation

This study reports on the development, reliability, and validity of a new instrument for obtaining respondents' body image perception, the Brazilian Photographic Figure Rating Scale (BPFRS). This instrument consists of eight photographic images (seven distorted and one accurate) of respondents themselves in standardized poses, taken just prior to requesting respondents to make self-ratings on the instrument. Participants involved in developing and evaluating this instrument were 142 Brazilian women (age 21.8 ± 3.0 years). Ten experts assessed content validity and showed high agreement (defined by ratings of 4-5 on a 5-point scale) with items measuring underlying constructs and high (>70%) interrater agreement. A Pearson correlation demonstrated convergence between the BPFRS and other related scales; a positive correlation was also evident between actual and respondent-perceived body mass index. Both test-retest and Kappa confirmed temporal stability. These findings indicate that the BPFRS can accurately and reliably assess body image dissatisfaction and body perception in young women by deploying realistic, personalized images as stimuli for self-ratings. Implications for further research and treatment of body image problems are discussed.

Short-term changes in handgrip strength, body composition, and lymphedema induced by breast cancer surgery

PURPOSE

This study investigated short-term changes in body composition, handgrip strength, and presence of lymphedema in women who underwent breast cancer surgery.

METHODS

Ninety-five women participated in a cross-sectional study, divided into two groups: Control (n=46), with healthy women, and Experimental (n=49), with women six months after breast cancer surgery. The Experimental Group was subdivided into right total mastectomy (RTM, n=15), left total mastectomy (LTM, n=11), right quadrant (RQ, n=13), and left quadrant (LQ, n=10). It was also redistributed among women with presence (n=10) or absence (n=39) of lymphedema. Presence of lymphedema, handgrip strength, and body composition were assessed.

RESULTS

Trunk lean mass and handgrip strength were decreased in the Experimental Group. Total lean mass was increased in the LTM compared to RTM or LQ. Left handgrip strength in LTM was decreased compared to RTM and RQ and in LQ compared to RTM and RQ. Finally, total lean mass, trunk fat mass, trunk lean mass, right and left arm lean mass were increased in women with lymphedema.

CONCLUSIONS

Breast cancer survivors have changes in their body composition and in handgrip strength six months after surgery; however, the interaction between the type of surgery and its impact is unclear. Furthermore, women who developed lymphedema in this period showed more significant changes in the body composition, but they were not enough to cause impairment in handgrip strength.

Nível de atividade física, comorbidades e idade de pacientes hipertensos

No envelhecimento, hábito inativo está associado a doenças crônicas. Existem diferentes domínios da atividade física, tais como: tempo livre e locomoção. O objetivo foi analisar associações entre diferentes domínios de atividade física, comorbidades e idade em hipertensos. Foram entrevistados 192 hipertensos. Classificados em menos ativos e mais ativos para atividades no lazer, locomoção, ocupação e total e estratificados em grupos etários. A circunferência de cintura foi avaliada e comorbidades auto referidas. O teste Qui-quadrado analisou as associações e o teste ANOVA one way comparou os grupos etários, adotando significância estatística quando p<0,05. As médias de atividade física ocupacional e total foram menores para idade igual ou acima dos 60 e 70 anos, respectivamente. A atividade ocupacional esteve associada à idade em mulheres e, ao colesterol e diabetes em homens, que também tiveram atividade física de locomoção associada à circunferência de cintura. Em síntese a atividade física de hipertensos associa-se a comorbidades para diferentes grupos etários e sexos.

Indices of body fat distribution for assessment of lipodysthrophy in people living with HIV/AIDS

BACKGROUND

Metabolic and morphological changes associated with excessive abdominal fat, after the introduction of Antiretroviral Therapy, increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in people living with HIV/AIDS(PLWHA). Accurate methods for body composition analysis are expensive and the use of anthropometric indices is an alternative. However the investigations about this subject in PLWHA are rare, making this research very important for clinical purpose and to advance scientific knowledge. The aim of this study is to correlate results of anthropometric indices of evaluation of body fat distribution with the results obtained by Dual-energy X-Ray Absorptiometry(DEXA), in people living with HIV/AIDS.

METHODS

The sample was of 67 PLWHA(39 male and 28 female), aged 43.6±7.9 years. Body mass index, conicity index, waist/hip ratio, waist/height ratio and waist/thigh were calculated. Separated by sex, each index/ratio was plotted in a scatter chart with linear regression fit and their respective Pearson correlation coefficients. Analyses were performed using Prism statistical program and significance was set at 5%.

RESULTS

The waist/height ratio presented the highest correlation coefficient, for both male (r=0.80, p<0.001) and female (r=0.87, p <001), while the lowest were in the waist/thigh also for both: male group (r=0.58, p<0.001) and female group (r=0.03, p=0.86). The other indices also showed significant positive correlation with DEXA.

CONCLUSION

Anthropometric indices, especially waist/height ratio may be a good alternative way to be used for evaluating the distribution of fat in the abdominal region of adults living with HIV/ADIS.

Lipodystrophy in HIV/AIDS patients with different levels of physical activity while on antiretroviral therapy

INTRODUCTION

Lipodystrophy is related to the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and can cause aesthetic stigma and increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Physical activity may be a valid alternative for the treatment and prevention of lipodystrophy. However, few studies address this issue. The objective of this study was to assess lipodystrophy related to highly active antiretroviral therapy in HIV/AIDS patients with different physical activity habits.

METHODS

The sample was composed of 42 HIV/AIDS patients taking HAART medication who were visiting the Counseling and Testing Center (CTC) in Presidente Prudente. The level of physical activity was obtained using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ); lipodystrophy was diagnosed using a self-report questionnaire that was administered to the patient and then followed up by medical confirmation. The percentage of trunk fat was estimated by dual X-Ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Information about sex, age, length of HAART treatment, CD4+ T lymphocyte count (CD4) and viral load was also collected.

RESULTS

A higher prevalence of lipodystrophy was observed in the sedentary group when compared to the physically active group, which indicates that physical activity may be a protective factor in relation to the occurrence of lipodystrophy. The group that had a higher CD4 had a higher proportion of lipodystrophy and a higher proportion of younger and physically active individuals. The patients with lipodystrophy had a higher percentage of trunk fat and were more sedentary than active individuals.

CONCLUSIONS

A physically active lifestyle has a protective effect against the occurrence of lipodystrophy related to HAART.
