Integral valorisation of tomato by-products towards bioactive compounds recovery: Human health benefits

The tomato processing industry is one of the world's most important markets. This industry aims to optimise production, minimise energy costs and waste streams while ensuring high-quality products. This sector produces substantial amounts of by-products frequently disposed of as waste rather than reintroducing them with a new intent into the supply chain. However, these by-products are rich in bioactive compounds (BC), including carotenoids, fibre, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and chemopreventive properties, and cardiovascular protection. Reusing these compounds is favourable to reducing the environmental impact and enables the development of added-value products with various possible uses such as food and feed additives, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, etc. This review summarises relevant issues towards the recovery and valorisation of BC from industrial tomato by-products within a circular economy context.

Integrating road traffic externalities through a sustainability indicator

Road traffic poses negative externalities on society and represents a key challenge in sustainable transportation. However, the existing literature about the assessment of traffic externalities drawn on a common measure is scarce. This paper develops a sustainability indicator that integrates traffic-related externalities as means of traffic congestion, noise, greenhouse gases (GHG) and nitrogen oxides emissions, health impacts and road crash related costs, and adjusted to local contexts of vulnerability. Traffic, road crashes, acoustic and vehicle dynamic data were collected from one real-world intercity corridor pair comprising three alternative routes. The site-specific operations were characterized using a modeling platform of traffic, emissions, noise and air quality. A specific methodology is applied for each road traffic externality and translated in a single factor - external cost. The results indicated that road crashes presented the largest share in the partly rural/urban route while GHG emissions had the highest contribution in external costs for the highway routes. Also, the distribution of external cost component varied according to the type of road, mostly due to different levels of exposed inhabitants. This paper offers a line of research that produced a method for decision-makers with a reliable and flexible cost analysis aimed at reducing the negative impacts of road traffic. It also encourages the design of eco-traffic management policies considering the perspective of drivers, commuters and population.

Frequency of familial pituitary adenoma syndromes among patients with functioning pituitary adenomas in a reference outpatient clinic

INTRODUCTION

Pituitary adenomas (PA) occur mainly as sporadic disease, but familial syndromes are found in approximately 5% of cases. Identification of these syndromes is important in order to diagnose individuals at risk at an earlier stage.

AIMS

To evaluate the frequency of familial PA in a reference outpatient clinic devoted to PA treatment and to identify family members suspected to have pituitary disease.

METHODS

Patients with PA were interviewed with respect to the presence of family members with diagnosis of PA or with signs or symptoms suggestive of them. The family members who had a clinical picture suggestive of pituitary disease were further evaluated in an attempt to identify new PA cases. In families with familial disease, the AIP gene was sequenced.

RESULTS

262 patients were evaluated and familial syndrome was found in 13 (5%). Ten (3.8%) patients had familial isolated PA (FIPA) and three (1.2%) had multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1. After evaluation of family members' symptomatology, 110 were considered suspected of having pituitary disease, but only 24 participated in the study. Of these 24, 1 was diagnosed with a corticotropinoma. AIP mutations were found in 20% of FIPA families.

CONCLUSION

We found a frequency of familial PA similar to that previously described, as well as a similar frequency of AIP mutations among FIPA families. An active search of the affected family members was able to identify one case of Cushing´s disease. Patients should be aware of pituitary disease's clinical picture to identify possibly affected family members.

Technological properties of bacteriocin-producing lactic acid bacteria isolated from Pico cheese an artisanal cow's milk cheese

AIM

Evaluate technologically relevant properties from bacteriocin-producing strains to use as starter/adjunct cultures in cheese making.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Eight isolates obtained from Pico cheese produced in Azores (Portugal) were found to produce bacteriocins against Listeria monocytogenes and three isolates against Clostridium perfringens. They were identified as Lactococcus lactis and Enterococcus faecalis and submitted to technological tests: growth at different conditions of temperature and salt, acid production, proteolysis, lipolysis, coexistence, enzymatic profile and autolytic capacity. Safety evaluation was performed by evaluating haemolytic, gelatinase and DNase activity, resistance to antibiotics and the presence of virulence genes. Some isolates presented good technological features such as high autolytic activity, acid and diacetyl production. Lactococcus lactis was negative for all virulence genes tested and inhibit the growth of all Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates. Enterococci were positive for the presence of some virulence genes, but none of the isolates were classified as resistant to important antibiotics.

CONCLUSIONS

The bacteriocin-producing Lc. lactis present good potential for application in food as adjunct culture in cheese production. The study also reveals good technological features for some Enterococcus isolates.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

Bacteriocin-producing strains presented important technological properties to be exploited as new adjunct culture for the dairy industry, influencing flavour development and improve safety.

Hydrogen in chemical vapour deposited carbon nanotubes: an active site for functionalization

The presence of hydrogen in as-grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) synthesized by microwave plasma (MP) chemical vapour deposition (CVD) technique is demonstrated. Our results showed that the MPCVD, as-grown CNTs were hydrogenated consisting of C-H bonds; whereas, the tubes synthesized by arc discharge consisted of non-hydrogenated multi-walled CNTs. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and micro-Raman spectroscopy techniques were used to detect C-H bonding in the as-grown CNTs. The effective functionalization of as-grown hydrogenated CNTs grown using a microwave CVD process is first time demonstrated by laser assisted CVD process. It was found that the laser-assisted CVD process resulted in the termination of hydrogen and the oxidation of as-grown CNT structure leading to the carboxylic group attachment. The FTIR results show the presence of -OH and C=O bonds in the functionalized samples. However, the non-hydrogenated CNTs could not be effectively functionalized by the same process, probably due to the fact that it did not contain active sites pre-requisite for functionalization, as did the CVD grown samples. The functionalization of CVD grown tubes is believed to take place at the 'active' hydrogen-terminated sites on the CNT surfaces.

Hydrogen adsorption onto nickel modified carbon nanotubes

The Hot Filament Chemical Vapour Deposition (HFCVD) method was employed to study hydrogen adsorption on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified by nickel doping. Prior to the nickel doping, effective functionalisation of CNTs was achieved by treating them in HNO3/H2O2 medium. Samples were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy techniques. SEM analyses revealed the morphology of the samples and the presence of nickel was identified by EDS analyses. Raman analysis revealed the enhancement of defects on the CNTs after the nickel modification. The defects created along with the catalytic activity of nickel supplied more hydrogen access to the CNTs. This was inferred from highest intensity ratio of D and G band (ID/IG) for hydrogen treated samples. However, FTIR spectra did not exhibit any C-H related bands. This confirms that the adsorption of hydrogen onto CNTs is primarily by surface adsorption.

Impact of respiratory infections by influenza viruses A and B in pediatrics patients from Federal University of Paraná, Brazil

The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of influenza virus on pediatric hospitalized patients. We retrospectively reviewed records of children with laboratory diagnoses, by cell culture and/or indirect immunofluorescence assay, of influenza virus seen in a period of 6 years. A total of 1,033 samples were analyzed, 45 (4.3%) of them being reactive to influenza virus. Thirty-one samples were positive to influenza A virus and 14 to influenza B. The frequency of hospitalization in intensive care and medical emergency was found to be high. Three (8.6%) patients died, two of them due to respiratory failure. Low frequency of influenza virus infection was observed in the study. The data suggest the need of more efficient epidemiological surveillance measures in order to obtain reliable information to better assess the impact of the virus on our region and determine the need of preventive measures, such as immunization.

Vulvar squamous cell carcinoma. Prognostic factors for local recurrence after primary en bloc radical vulvectomy and bilateral groin dissection

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate clinical prognostic factors for local recurrence of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma after primary surgical treatment.

STUDY DESIGN

Of 104 patients treated for squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva in an 11-year period (1987-1997) at the Portuguese Cancer Institute, we selected for study 56 patients who meet the following criteria: (1) International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage Ib-IVa, (2) primary treatment of en bloc radical vulvectomy and bilateral groin dissection, and (3) follow-up reports. Files were retrieved for retrospective analysis. Fifteen patients (26.8%) had local recurrence at the fifth year. At the 24th month, 11 patients had local recurrence, and 31 were in follow-up, without recurrence. We evaluated age at initial diagnosis, date of surgical treatment, tumor size, results of tumor macroscopy, histologic differentiation, groin lymph node status, FIGO stage, resection limits, adjuvant radiotherapy, duration of stay, associated vulvar skin disease, date of detection of recurrence, site/sites of recurrence and follow-up status at the 24th month after surgical treatment between the 11 patients with local recurrence and 31 in follow-up without recurrence.

RESULTS

The 11 patients with local recurrence had a significant initial FIGO stage, IVa (P = .049) and a significant association with the number of groin lymph nodes containing metastasis in comparison to the 31 patients without local recurrence. No other statistically compared data were significant.

CONCLUSION

These results suggest that vulvar squamous cell carcinoma local recurrence after a primary surgical procedure is related to poor tumor prognostic factors (number of groin nodes containing tumor metastasis and FIGO stage IVa). On multivariate analysis, the presence of metastasis in two or more groin nodes was a powerful factor related to local recurrence. Postoperative radiotherapy to the vulva for such patients with a high risk of local recurrence is advisable.

Mutagenicity of airborne particulate organic material from urban and industrial areas of São Paulo, Brazil

The mutagenicity of airborne particulate matter at three different sites within the São Paulo urban area and the Cubatão industrial area, São Paulo State, Brazil, was evaluated using the Salmonella mutagenicity assay over a year's period (June 1990-May 1991). Total suspended particles (TSP) were collected using a Hi-vol sampler and extracted with methylene chloride by ultrasonication. Pooled seasonal extracts were tested using S. typhimurium TA98 and TA100 with and without metabolic activation (S9) and TA98NR and TA98/1,8-DNP6 without metabolic activation. Organic extracts of the samples with the highest monthly TSP concentration were also assayed for mutagenicity. All samples collected at São Paulo and Cubatão showed mutagenicity with strain TA98, and in general the addition of S9 did not modify the mutagenic response, suggesting the prevalence of direct-acting frameshift mutagens in the atmosphere of these sites. The mutagenicity detected in the urban areas of São Paulo (mainly downtown) was much higher than in the Cubatão industrial area and similar to the more urbanized cities in the world, where vehicle emissions are the major pollution source. Results obtained with the strains TA98NR and TA98/1,8-DNP6 suggested the presence of mononitro- and dinitroarenes contributed to the mutagenicity of these atmospheric samples. A seasonal variation was observed with higher levels of frameshift mutagens during Spring in São Paulo and Summer in Cubatão. During the Winter, more significant responses were found with strain TA100 in the presence of S9 at all sites. Monthly samples presented high levels of mutagenicity during the period of June to November. Results from this research provide support for Air Pollution Control Programs in the detection of the more potent organic mutagenic compounds in the atmosphere and may help in the establishment of priorities for control and regulatory actions.

Long-term stability of lipid emulsions with parenteral nutrition solutions

The stability of the mixture of peripheral vein parenteral nutrition (PN) solution with 10% lipid emulsions (Intralipid or Lipofundin MCT) was tested during a prolonged period of refrigerated storage. The analysis included gross visual examination of the bottle, pH determination, and examination by electron microscope. The mixtures of fat emulsions with PN solution demonstrated no physical instability or pH alteration. Examination under electron microscope revealed no alterations after 4 wk, but the surface layer of fat globules was disrupted after 10 and 18 wk. This study demonstrates that complete nutritive mixtures can be prepared and stored in refrigeration for at least 4 wk before clinical use.
