Prevalence of Sleep Disorders Among the General Population of the Jazan Region of Southwest Saudi Arabia

BACKGROUND

Sleep disorders impose a substantial burden on the global population, leading to an array of health complications. Understanding their prevalence and associated risk factors is crucial to formulating effective interventions.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of sleep disorders among residents of the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study conducted an online survey from December 2022 to March 2023. The sample comprised 670 respondents aged 18 years and older residing in Jazan. Demographic data, lifestyle habits, sleep patterns, and sleep disorder symptoms were assessed.

RESULTS

The participants were predominantly women (62.2%), with an average age of 30.99 years and a normal body mass index. The analyses revealed that 28.8% of the respondents reported experiencing sleep disorders, and 13.4% particularly had obstructive sleep apnea. Nearly half of the participants reported having primary insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, and restless leg syndrome. Significant associations were found between sleep disorders and older age (p = 0.012), obesity (p = 0.043), short or thin neck (p = 0.034), smoking (p = 0.003), caffeine use (p = 0.001), existing health conditions (p = 0.001), medication use (p = 0.013), lack of daytime naps (p = 0.043), and frequent nighttime awakenings to urinate (p = 0.001). The most common self-reported reasons for nightly awakenings were urination, anxiety or stress, discomfort or noise, and health conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest a high prevalence of sleep disorders among adults in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. Various demographic, lifestyle, and health-related factors are linked to these disorders. Therefore, targeted sleep health education and interventions could be instrumental in tackling this significant public health issue.

Prevalence of Varicose Veins Among Nurses in Different Departments in Jazan Public Hospitals, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Varicose veins (VV) in the lower limbs are the most prevalent vascular condition in humans. They can cause significant signs and symptoms and, in extreme cases, death. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and identify the risk factors for varicose veins among nurses working in multiple departments at Jazan King Fahd Central Hospital and Prince Muhammad bin Nasser Hospital. A cross-sectional study was conducted by sending a questionnaire to female and male nurses in these hospitals. This study included 482 nurses, 415 (86.1%) of whom were female and 67 (13.9%) male. The prevalence of varicose veins among the nurses of both hospitals was 76 (15.8%), compared with 406 (84.2%) not diagnosed with varicose veins. The prevalence of varicose veins was 67 (88.2%) in female nurses, compared with 9 (11.8%) in male nurses. The risk factors associated with varicose veins were ethnicity (p = 0.007), carrying heavy items (p = 0.001), lack of exercise (p = 0.031), family history (p = 0.001), use of hormonal therapy (p = 0.001), use of contraceptive pills (p = 0.0035), type of delivery (p = 0.002), number of children (p = 0.004), and hours sitting per shift (p = 0.002). The comorbidities associated with varicose veins were deep vein thrombosis (p = 0.001), hypertension (p = 0.002), chronic constipation (p = 0.006), diabetes (p = 0.001), kidney disease (p = 0.001), rheumatoid arthritis (p = 0.001), coronary artery disease, and severe occupational injury to the lower extremities (p = 0.001). Nurses are responsible for most of the health system's services. Increasing the number of nursing workers for patient care, encouraging physical exercise, and lowering the pension age appear to be required to avoid the occurrence and development of varicose veins among nurses.

Prevalence of overweight and obesity among children aged 2-5 years in Bahrain: a comparison between two reference standards

A cross-sectional study was carried out on Bahraini preschoolers aged 2-5 years (354 males and 344 females) to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity using the World Health Organization and the International Obesity Task Force cut-off values. Weight and height were recorded and body mass index (BMI) was calculated to determine the proportion of overweight and obesity. Using the World Health Organization percentile cut-off values, overweight (12.3%) and obesity (8.4%) was higher in females between 2 and <4 years of age whereas, the proportion of both overweight (8.4%) and obesity (7.2%) were higher in males between 4 and <6 years of age. Relative to the International Obesity Task Force indicators, the World Health Organization cut-off values produced nearly a 2-fold increase in both overweight and obesity at most ages. It is therefore important to ensure that the same cut-off reference values are used to define overweight and obesity particularly in preschoolers. Shifting to the new World Health Organization child growth standards may have important implications for child health programmes.
